The Natural Landscaping Alternative: An Annotated Slide Collection

Native plants provide a beautiful, hardy, drought resistant, low maintenance landscape while benefiting the environment. This Annotated Slide Collection contains fifty slides selected for their ability to define natural landscaping and explain its benefits, to illustrate applications of natural landscaping, and to demonstrate installation and management techniques. The annotations corresponding to the slides are not intended to serve as a script but to provide background to assist in the development of a presentation. We hope that you find the slides and annotations helpful.

Dan did an excellent job incorporating our desires to make a comprehensive landscape design on a complicated site. He answered many questions about gradng, hardscape materials and of course planting selections. It was easy to forward information to my builder and busy husband so that we could all work together on the project.

Plant Descriptions, Cultivation Tips, Lore, Trivia, Cultivars
by Ben Sharvy "God Almighty first planted a garden. And indeed it is the purest of human pleasures."
Francis Bacon This database lists every perennial plant that is worth growing for the sake of its produce, and that is hardy in at least 3 USDA hardiness zones; it also contains a selection of the most popular perennial herbs. Every plant listed here will survive temperatures down to at least 15 F without special care, and to at least 10 F with special care. Update. You can get all this and more as a Macintosh application, for only $15. The application comes with images for every plant (except the dandelion!), and the average image quality is higher than at the Web site (the photo for pineapple guava is typical). I might convert the photos to a cross-platform format upon request. There is a full-featured search engine, so that you can select only those plants that, say, will grow in zone 4, do not reject soggy soil, and attract birds. More info.

http://www.eren.doe.gov/consumerinfo/energy_savers/landscaping.html
Landscaping is a natural and beautiful way to keep your home more comfortable and reduce your energy bills. In addition to adding aesthetic value and environmental quality to your home, a well-placed tree, shrub, or vine can deliver effective shade, act as a windbreak, and reduce overall energy bills. Carefully positioned trees can save up to 25% of a typical household's energy for heating and cooling. Computer models from DOE predict that just three trees, properly placed around the house, can save an average household between $100 and $250 in heating and cooling energy costs annually. During the summer months, the most effective way to keep your home cool is to prevent the heat from building up in the first place. A primary source of heat buildup is sunlight absorbed by your home's roof, walls, and windows. Dark-colored home exteriors absorb 70% to 90% of the radiant energy from the sun that strikes the home's surfaces. Some of this absorbed energy is then transferred into your home by way of conduction, resulting in heat gain inside the house. In contrast, light-colored surfaces effectively reflect most of the heat away from your home. Landscaping can also help block and absorb the sun's energy to help decrease heat buildup in your home by providing shade and evaporative cooling.
