Advice and tips for planning, preparing, and constructing a new landscape area.

Planning the Home Landscape William C. Welch
Extension Landscape Horticulturist
A well-designed landscape is a pleasure to the family, enhances a community and adds to the property's resale value. Landscape design involves much more than placing trees, shrubs and other plants on the property. It is an art which deals with conscious arrangement or organization of outdoor space for human satisfaction and enjoyment. Some of its major goals include:
  • Organizing and developing the site for maximum use and pleasure.
  • Creating a visual relationship between the house and the site.
  • Reducing landscape maintenance to a practical level.
Americans spend tremendous amounts of money "landscaping" their businesses, homes, streets, parks, schools, etc. Much of this money is wasted, however, because of little or no planning. People cannot understand how to landscape until they know why they landscape. There are several reasons why people "landscape": some think it improves the appearance of their place; others like to grow plants; still others just want their place to look pretty. Too often these landscapes dominate rather than serve. Masses of plants or other materials in the landscape may take up a large portion of the space and leave little room for people. Then how does the designer arrange space so that people will find it useful, beautiful, meaningful and functional? His methods include:

It seems that one of my images displaying nudity was found to be in violation of the community standards of "Hometown AOL". I find it laughable because that particular image was on the "Hometown AOL" server for over a year. I had redesigned the site to make it more friendly for those who do not like the nudes. I had included a "skip nudes" button for when the viewer was running through the portfolio in a sequential manner. I had re-uploaded the the entire site and 3 days later I was informed that the whole thing was deleted. Oddly, it was just one image they found to be offensive. I wrote to the powers-that-be to find out why all my work was deleted and not just the "offending" page. I have yet to get a response. When you are the biggest and I am only one small user, it is a good bet that a response will not be forthcomming soon. I understand that AOL wishes to keep a "decent" community. I do not feel that AOL is for something patently pornographic or tasteless. But purusal of some of the sites put up by some on this service are with little or no merit. Most I have seen are just teens doing their thing on the web. I feel that my site stood out from the rest because it presented some (if I may say so my self) quality photography. If AOL wishes to be know for such Pulitzer Prize winning sites as "Jason's Tribute Page to Britney Spears", "Trent's and Steffie's Vacation Photos of Their Trip to Utica, NY" and "Anna's Disertation on the Distinct Differences Between Dole and Chiquita Bananas", so be it. (These are not real sites but some do come close with the degree of insipidness)

W. Joe Innis is a neo-impressionist painter whose paintings are collected worldwide.
The Better Times , a novella.
Princess Masako of Japan’s Royal Family supported Innis's Tokyo exhibit. In an introduction to his catalog she said, in part, " . . In our several conversations in Tokyo and Seoul, Mr. Innis revealed his belief that art is an international event rising above national considerations and boundaries. His paintings, his book underscore that conviction."
Innis's successful exhibitions in Istanbul were organized with the help from President Rauf Denktas of Northern Cyprus and his cultural advisors. The exhibition, Impressions, Turkey , was held in Topkapi Palace. It was sponsored by Mobil Oil Corporation and several Turkish owned multi-national companies. Innis has spent two years in Turkey and Cyprus.
Innis holds an M.F.A from Instituto Allende, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, the setting for his recent novel. He earned his B.A. in Journalism from San Diego State University and, after some years in France, returned to the West Coast as a political writer and editor for several publications in California. His sculpture of then-President Richard Nixon is included in the The White House collection.

109. Basic Principles Of Landscape Design
Dewayne L. Ingram's illustrated introduction is Circular 536, University of Florida Cooperative Extension Service.
http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/BODY_MG086
Basic Principles of Landscape Design
Dewayne L. Ingram Landscaping combines elements of art and science to create a functional, aesthetically pleasing extension of indoor living to the outdoors. One initial purpose of landscape design is to blend man's technology (house or building) into the natural surroundings. To work toward a desirable landscape design, the landscape horticulturist must have a working knowledge of art elements and design principles. This publication is intended for the commercial landscaper with little or no training in the use of these basic principles. This publication is not a complete landscape design text.
ELEMENTS OF ART
Elements of art include but are not limited to color, line, form, texture and scale. These elements are never independent of each other, but we will discuss their individual natures before considering the interactions. Color variation can best be explained by use of a color wheel ( Figure 1 ). Primary colors are red, blue and yellow. Orange, green and violet are called secondary colors because they are combinations of two primary colors. For example, yellow and red are combined to yield orange. Tertiary colors are the fusion of one primary and one secondary color. These colors would be between primary and secondary colors. Figure 1.

Exploring Eden at the Museum Thyssen-Bornemisza is the first exhibition in Spain exclusively devoted to 19th-century American landscape painting, a chapter of art history which is little known in Europe. Recently, the exhibition America. Die Neue Welt in Bildern des 19. Jahrhunderts at the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna (March 17 - June 20, 2000; catalogue: Prestel, 2000) covered partly the same subject which constitutes an important contribution to the tradition of landscape painting in the west. A lot of American 19th-century artists considered that the essence of the origin of their country was reflected in the landscape. With nature as the starting point, they developed their own artistic current which distanced itself from the European tradition by making nature their primary source of inspiration and by representing nature as the promised land whereas in Europe man's relationship with nature and not nature itself was at the center of attention. Americans were not interested in the landscape marked by man's presence but they regarded nature as a virgin territory, a landscape that had not been sullied by human kind, in which the hand of God, its creator, could be seen. They combined this religious feeling for nature with the idea of national identity. The exaltation of this paradisiacal landscape, hence the exhibition title

The values of landscape plants are many, including their influence on climate, air purification, erosion control, noise reduction, privacy screening, and increasing property value. Plants are important to the microclimate because they absorb heat from the air during the transpiration process (release of water in the form of vapor), provide shade that reduces solar radiation and reflection, lower wind speed, disperse fog, and influence snow deposition. Businesses have noted that attractively landscaped buildings result in above average labor productivity, lower absenteeism and easier worker recruitment. Studies have indicated people have a basic desire for contact with plants. Satisfying this need can have a strong positive influence on human behavior. Hospital rehabilitation therapists are aware of this fact and increasingly include gardening in their programs. Landscape plantings are important features of private and public properties and must be selected, planted, and maintained with skill. The emphasis of this article will be on the planting process with only a brief review of selection and maintenance.
