Once designated to be a jet fighter base, Richard Bong State Recreation Area is fittingly named after Maj. Richard I. Bong, a Poplar, Wisconsin, native who was America's leading air ace during World War II. The project was abandoned three days before concrete was to be poured for a 12,500-foot runway. Local citizens had the foresight to protect this open space for future generations. In 1974 the state bought the land and it became the state's first recreation area. trails , including trails for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and all-terrain vehicle (ATV) riding. There are two regular campgrounds with a total of 217 campsites, 54 of them with electric hookups. Six group campsites can accommodate 150 campers. A permanent naturalist is on duty at Richard Bong Recreation Area, and a variety of nature education programs are offered year round. The Molinaro Visitor Center has displays and exhibits about the history of Bong, plant and animal life, and other features. A slide/tape program is presented in the visitor center auditorium, and two self-guided nature trails wind through grasslands and woodlands. The recreation area has a boat launch (electric motors only) and an accessible fishing pier and shore locations for fishing for panfish. There is a 240-foot beach with a bath house.

    LAND ACQUISITION PROGRAM
    Introduction
The Land Acquisition program of the Northwest Florida Water Management District is driven by the District's continuing commitment to permanently protect and preserve the water resources of northwest Florida. This program continues to build upon the more than 179,000 acres of wetlands and recharge areas already acquired by the District since it began its land acquisition efforts in 1984. At present, some 2.5 percent of the District's total land area of 7,168,000 acres is protected explicitly for water resource purposes by lands the District has acquired. Photo of Econfina Creek

    Note to Landowners
The District's Five-Year Plan identifies a number of areas the District has selected for purchase, subject primarily to available funding and especially the presence of willing sellers. If your property is included in any of our acquisition areas or maps and you do not wish to sell your land to the District, the Florida Statutes require us to remove your property from the acquisition plan at the earliest opportunity. Please contact the Division of Land Acquisition at (850) 539-5999 at any time if you wish to remove your property from possible consideration for purchase. The District will maintain a list of such requests and annually adjust its acquisition plan accordingly.

The relevant bodies are required to take such steps as are reasonably practicable and consistent with other enactments relating to their functions, to secure that any rights which they have to the use of water and associated land are exercised so as to ensure that the water or land is made available, in the best manner, for recreational purposes. Opportunities are particularly likely to arise in respect of:

Wherever possible, access on roads and tracks should be extended to horse riders and cyclists for informal recreation. Access for organised activities such as orienteering, paragliding and caving should be granted unless there are clear reasons why it should be refused.

    Abstract
In 1997 Statistics Canada conducted a survey in nature-related activities on the Importance of Nature to Canadians. The map combines the data for these three boat types, classed by major river basins. It shows that the amount of usage across Canada is closely correlated to population, but also that usage is distributed throughout most of Canada. The use of non-mechanized watercraft on freshwater is as old as the Canada's first inhabitants. The canoe and kayak, in particular, were developed by Aboriginal Canadians as their transport vehicles. Canoes played an exceptionally large role in the exploration of Canada: Europeans quickly adopted them for exploration and for the long-distance transport of furs. Sailboats (as used for recreational purposes) were largely introduced by Europeans to Canada and have had a much more recent history here. Today, all three types of vessels are widely used for recreational purposes by Canadians. The data on usage shown on the map, and in the figure below comes from a major survey conducted in 1997. In that year, Statistics Canada conducted a survey on behalf of a nationwide partnership of 16 federal, provincial and territorial agencies interested in nature-related activities. The

    INTRODUCTION
Information on tourism and recreation resources is available from a number of agencies, including:
    • Ministry of Forests Ministry of Small Business, Tourism and Culture Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks
The Ministry of Forests manages recreation on crown land (outside protected areas) and maintains three Recreation Resource Inventories within the Forest Inventory that are used for LRMPs. These inventories are typically collected at a 1:20,000 - 50,000 but can be generalized to 1:250,000 maps for LRMP planning. Inventories include:
    • Recreation Features Inventory. This inventory identifies features in the landscape that are used for recreation (e.g., lakes, waterfalls, hiking trails, viewscapes, beaches). The inventory notes which recreation activities use the features (e.g., hunting, kayaking, hiking) and rates them according to significance (provincial, regional, locally common or locally very common) and sensitivity to change. Visual Landscape Inventory. This inventory identifies lands that could be visually sensitive (e.g., along roads or close to communities) and analyses existing conditions and how sensitive the viewscapes would be to forest harvesting.

The Indian River Lagoon (IRL) is a huge aquatic playground where you'll find everything from dedicated birdwatchers and anglers in highly specialized shallow-water skiffs to people on speeding sailboards and personal watercraft. With so many activities going on at once, we all need to pay attention to what others are doing. FISHING Fishing is one of Florida's top three outdoor recreational activities. Almost half the people recently surveyed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Sea Grant College rate saltwater fishing as "their most important activity." A slightly higher number, 57 percent, considered saltwater fishing one of life's main sources of satisfaction.
Unfortunately, continued loss of sea grasses, as well as increased angling pressure along the IRL, have impacted the fish population drastically. Not long ago, the IRL was perhaps the best place in the entire country to take big spotted seatrout, the so-called "gator" trout that weighed 10 pounds or more. Due to the steady loss of grass flats, gator trout are rare these days.
