Mali Southeast of Takrûr, south of Ghâna and at the headwaters of the Senegal and Niger rivers lay the land of the Malinke people.  Malinke is a Fulani name for the people who call themselves variously Mandingo, Mandinga or Mandinka.  Their language is called Mande, and the land Manding, or Mali by the Fulani.  Arab geographers at first referred to people of this region as Lamlam, and regarded them as primitive and savage peoples.  Being without elaborate political organization, they were easy prey to slave raiders from Takrûr, Silâ and Ghâna. One group of Malinke people, however, commanded the respect of friend and enemy alike.  These were the Dyula or Wangara, as Arab and Portuguese sources called Malinke traders, and they held the secret and monopoly of the gold production in the Bambuk region between the Senegal and Fameme rivers.  The Wangara traded with Ghâna and Takrûr, giving the gold for salt brought from the desert. Muslims eager to buy gold settled in the town of Ghiyârû in the middle of the Bambuk gold territory.   Nearby on the Senegal river was the town of Yaresnâ, otherwise known as Barîsa, which was completely Muslim.  These towns engaged in the gold trade as well as slave raiding among the non-Wangara Malinke. The exploited Malinke hunters began to organize their defences, and al-Bakrî mentions the existence of two principalities among them, one called Do and the other Malal.  We have seen above, in chapter 7, how the king of Malal became Muslim when a Muslim guest prayed for and obtained rain.  Islam did not take root among the Malinke at this time, as we saw in chapter 9 from al-Idrîsî’s description of the Lamlam, but its revival in a cultural form in the time of Sundiata.

  • Yvonne and Friends No 1 Title: TajMahala Artist: Sharkbrother Why?: Our SA Rock album of the year, and it wasn't a very difficult decision, despite the strength and quality of the challengers, especially Blk Sonshine. But in the end, it had to go to the new Gauteng band Sharkbrother who released this debut masterpiece onto an unsuspecting audience. On hearing this the first few times the obvious questions arose, as in "who are these guys?", "what have they been listening to?" and "what are they on?". No clear answers have yet emerged, and no adequate descriptions of this dark, deep and vast album present themselves. You just have to hear it and spend time floating in its murky and strange depths. SharkBrother's stated intent is "to provide a counterfoil to the proliferation of rock and jazz bands on the SA scene, providing an alternative that is beautiful and simplistic. This gels with the band's philosophy of a return to aesthetics in art and a move away from the shock tactics employed by the hardcore and the verbose technicality of the supergroup". Fighting talk or cocky hype perhaps, but that's precisely what has been achieved with the measured calm and understated depths of 'TajMahala'.

Trying to make heads or tails out of this conflict based on what makes it into the Israeli media (and even more so the foreign media) is kind of like trying to come to grips with the nature of the universe by observing the stars at night. I understand. But many of us are instinctively driven to try to make sense of the information about the world to which we have access. What is reported in the various media constitutes most of that information. We have little choice but to make as much sense as we can out of the information we have access to. Honolulu Hula: Hawaii’s Art
In the common imagination, Hawaii has no more potent symbol than the hula dancer, usually a youthful beauty with a dreamy smile undulating to the rhythmic strums of a ukulele.
The hula in Hawaii - in all of its sacred and ceremonial forms - was an integrated system of poetry, movement and rhythm. The essence of ancient hula was in the words, the chant, without which, to the Hawaiian mind, there would be no dance. Gourds, drums, split bamboo sticks, and other instruments only supported the rhythm. Hula could be performed without instruments, but never without chanting. The chants themselves were complex, poetic and rich with multi-levels of meaning.
The origins of the hula are shrouded in mist, though its antecedents can be traced through Polynesia to India itself. While the acknowledged patron of the hula is the goddess Laka, a wealth of legends tell of the fiery goddess Pele, who searched for a home on each of the Hawaiian islands before settling into a volcanic cauldron on the Big Island of Hawaii. Today, more than 300 sacred songs and chants recount the saga of Pele, her love for the chanter Lohi'au, and her sister Hi'iaka's heroic journey to bring Lohi'au from his home on Kaua'i to Pele at the other end of the archipelago. Several versions of the Pele legend credit hula's beginnings to Hi'iaka herself and to her mortal friend Hopoe, whom

HON02 PEARL HARBOR AND HONOLULU HIGHLIGHTS [FDP: W. WEI]
1300-1830 Tuesday, 12 August Minimum 20/Maximum 250 (PRICE: $23.00) It was at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, that the United States was first attacked during World War II. Depart by air-conditioned motorcoach to the Arizona Visitor Center to view an informative film documenting the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Browse through a number of interesting exhibits before taking a shuttle launch to the monument that rests above the sunken USS Arizona. While on the shuttle boat, you can see the battleship Missouri off in the distance. The “Mighty Mo” was the last battleship built for the US Navy and served with distinction for five decades following 1944. It was aboard her decks that the documents ending World War II were signed. From Pearl Harbor, return to the city past a multitude of attractions, including the Iolani Palace, the Kawaiahai Church, the State Library, the statue of King Kamehameha, the State Capitol and the Governor’s Mansion. Beyond the city lies the Punchbowl National Cemetery, an extinct volcano that is the final resting place for many of America’s brave fighting forces. Its beautifully manicured grounds lend an air of peaceful tranquility.
