The Commissioner is responsible for supervising the activities of these businesses to ensure compliance with the financial institution laws and regulations of Maryland. Supervision includes periodic on-site examinations, as well as, off-site monitoring programs. Each year, the Commissioner handles numerous corporate applications from the banking industry, including formation of new banks, charter conversions, mergers and acquisitions, affiliates, trust powers, foreign bank offices, branches, etc. The Commissioner is also responsible for issuing licenses to consumer, installment and mortgage lenders, check cashers, and money transmitters. The Commissioner provides assistance to consumers by investigating complaints of questionable business practices involving the financial institutions under its supervision.

    Established in 1943, the Department of Labor promotes voluntary and peaceful settlement of labor disputes and enforces state labor laws.
    The department provides mediation services, conducts union representation elections and files annual reports of unions with more than 25 members. Additionally, this office publishes job related health and safety statistics (OSHA) and a census of fatal occupational injuries (CFOI) through its federal surveys. Renewed emphasis is being placed on workplace safety programs.
    Further, the Labor Department strives to promote positive labor/management cooperation between companies and their unions through the Governor’s Labor/Management Conference.

    The Division of Labor and Management is responsible for administering the state's labor laws. Staff in the division help settle problems between employers and workers; enforce wage and hour and child labor laws, answer questions about state and federal unemployment laws, and administer the state's workers' compensation system. The Department of Labor is frequently asked about state and federal posting requirements. The South Dakota Division of Unemployment requires a poster which it provides to employers for free. For more information about this poster, contact the Unemployment Insurance Division at 605-626-2312. The workers' compensation law also requires employers to post information encouraging safety. There is no required format for this poster. No other posters are required under state law, but various federal agencies such as the US Labor Department, OSHA and EEOC have poster requirements. Federal 5 in 1 posters are available at no charge from your local Career Center or may be downloaded Effective 7/1/03 the maximum weekly compensation rate equals $498 per week, and the minimum weekly compensation rate equals $249 per week.
