She established good links and conducted training and education sessions in the Oncology Institute of the country's capital city, Bishkek. Her work is part of a wider partnership within the American International Health Alliance, which has formed strong links between the University of Kansas Medical Center and a number of Institutes and hospitals in Kyrgyzstan, with the support of the Kyrgyz Ministry of Health. We quote her report here at length, as it is one of the few first-hand written accounts of hospice development in former Soviet Central Asia:

Bishkek - History Victory Square Bishkek is laid out on a grid, with wide, tree-lined streets. It has parks and many orchards, and permanently snow-capped mountains are visible to the south. Besides the various government buildings, there are theatres, the local Academy of Sciences (founded 1954), the Kyrgyz State University (1951), and agricultural, medical, polytechnic, and teacher-training institutes. The city's industry developed in two stages: until 1941 emphasis was on the food and other light industries using local raw materials; but, after the evacuation of heavy industries from western Russia during World War II, an extensive machine-building and metalworking industry came into being. Development was particularly rapid in the 1960s. Pop. (1989 prelim.) 616,000. Click To Go Back

History of Kyrgyzstan
The earliest descendants of the Kirghiz people, who are believed to be of mixed Mongol Turkic , and Kipchak descent, probably settled until the 10th century around what is now the Tyva region of the Russian Federation . With the rise of the Mongol Empire in the 13th century, the Kyrgyz migrated south. They did not emerge as a distinct ethnic group until the 15th century. Various Turkic peoples ruled them until 1685, when they came under the control of the Mongol Oirots. Islam is the predominant religion in the region, and most of the Kyrgyz are Sunni Muslims of the Hanafi school. In the early 19th century, the southern territory of Kyrgyzstan came under the control of the Khanate of Kokand, and the territory was formally incorporated into the Russian Empire in 1876. The Russian takeover instigated numerous revolts against tsarist authority, and many of the Kyrgyz opted to move to the Pamirs and Afghanistan . In addition, the suppression of the 1916 rebellion in Central Asia caused many Kyrgyz to migrate to China Soviet power was initially established in the region in 1919, and the Kara-Kyrgyz Autonomous Oblast was created within the RFSR (the term Kara-Kyrgyz was used until the mid-1920s by the Russians to distinguish them from the Kazakhs, who were also referred to as Kyrgyz). On December 5, 1936, the

Introductory Note:
  • The cultures of Central Asia and Iran share a number of remarkable features. They are Islamic, albeit Sunnite and Shi'ite, and they enjoy a common cosmology and mythology. Additionally, they share the same early history. Indeed, until the rise of the Western Turks and the subsequent coming of the Turks and Mongols to Central Asia, the primary population of the region was Iranian. As descendants of the earlier Indo-European peoples, they followed the teachings of Zoroaster and worshiped his God, Ahura Mazda.
  • From the foregoing, we can conclude that any social, political, or ideological study of the early history of this region must take this common heritage into consideration. To respect the shared values of the Iranian and the Central Asian peoples, therefore, the following arrangement is adhered to. The more recent events appear under "Central Asia" and "Iran" respectively. The ancient and medieval issues that cannot be logically divided appear under "Central Asia and Iran."
  • This web page covers a vast area from Africa to India and from Kazakhstan to the Persian Gulf. It also

History Kyrgyzstan is one of the former Soviet Republics in Central Asia. In 1991 the Republic became independent.
The history of Kyrgyzstan has its roots in the remote past. The Kyrgyz are one of the most ancient nationalities in the world. The first written references to the Kyrgyz people were found in Chinese chronicles in 201 B.C. They were almost the sole inhabitants of Southern Siberia and Central Asia. Because there was written Kyrgyz language until the late 19th century, the only records were in Chinese, Iranian, Turkish and Arabian chronicles.
One of the versions of the meaning of the word "Kyrgyz" is "Forty Girls". The legend states that a long, long time ago there lived a Padusha who had an only daughter. To stop his daughter from feeling lonely, the Padusha gave her forty personal girl-servants and built a Palace just for them, a long way from the city. One day as the girls were walking near a lake they saw some foam in the water and decided to go swimming. Some time later it was discovered that all the girls were pregnant and the indignant father ordered them to be taken to the distant mountains and left there. The Kyrgyz people are the descendants of these girls.

What it lacks in development it makes up for determination. What it lacks in historical architecture it more than makes up for in Central Asia's finest mountain 'architecture'- the highest and most dramatic parts of the central Tian Shan and Pamir Alay ranges. Most travellers vote this the most appealing, accessible and welcoming of the former Soviet Central Asian republics.
The earliest notable residents of what is now Kyrgyzstan were warrior tribes of Saka (also known as Scythians), from about the 6th century ÷ó to the 5th century AD. Alexander the Great met perhaps the stiffest resistance in his 4th century ÷ó advance through Central Asia from Scythian (Saka) tribes. Rich bronze and gold relics have been recovered from Scythian burial mounds at the Lake Issyk-Kul and in southern Kazakstan.
