Kyrgyzstan declares emergency after clash with kidnappers
August 26, 1999

Web posted at: 12:30 p.m. EDT (1630 GMT)
BISHEK, Kyrgyzstan The Kyrgyz Defense Ministry declared a state of emergency Thursday as Kyrgyz forces launched an attack against an armed group holding at least 22 people hostage in a remote area of the former Soviet republic. Airstrikes were carried out against the militants before troops launched a ground attack, but the Kyrgyz Defense Ministry gave no further details on the fighting. The militants seized five small villages in southern Kyrgyzstan after crossing the border from Tajikistan on Sunday. Their hostages include four Japanese geologists. Five days into the crisis, the identity and demands of the gunmen remain a mystery, though Kyrgyz officials believe they are intruders linked to radical Islamic groups in neighboring Uzbekistan or Tajikistan.
