    Geography of the Kyrgyz Republic
Between China and Central Asia there is a country, lifted by its mountains above the world. Tien Shan is the name given to the mountains by Marco Polo, a great traveller and merchant, who walked across the territory of the present-day Kyrgyzstan on the Great Silk Road. Kyrgyzstan is at the same altitude with Italy and only a little smaller in area. It will take one only 4 hours to fly to Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, from Moscow, and not more than an hour from Tashkent and Alma-Ata. The climate is sharply continental. Summer is usually dry and sunny in the valleys, whereas it often rains in the mountains. Clear good weather lasts till December. There are thaws in winter and cold spells in spring and autumn. Kyrgyzstan ranks first in Central Asia in prospected coal reserves. Mining and processing of non-ferrous metals, such as antimony, mercury, tin, copper and others, is presently the focus of the ore-mining industry and it's prospects for the future. Wool processing and cotton growing occupy a conspicuous place in the economy of the republic.

"Destination: Kyrgyzstan" offers a close view of a newly independent nation. The teaching materials, together with the accompanying video, will help students learn about the history and culture of this nation. These teaching materials will help students understand the influence of physical geography on culture, and will focus on the diversity found even in a relatively small country such as Kyrgyzstan. The activities in the guide have been grouped into three academic levels: grades 3-5, grades 6-9, and grades 10-12. The six basic themes of geography serve as the fundamental organizing structure of the units. The themes and the national geography standards based on each are found on pages 5-6 of this guide. Each activity is coded by number to the standards to which it best relates. Each lesson in this study guide includes the following sections:
  • Geography Standards lists the specific standard that is addressed by the activity.

    GEOGRAPHY
There are 1923 lakes in Kyrgyzstan, lake Issyk-kul is one of the deepest mountain lakes in the world, and it derives its glory from its sky blue colour, high mineral content and the fact that it never freezes.
The Naryn river rises in the At-Bashy range and joins the Kara Darya in the Fergana Valley to become the Syr Darya. There are seven power stations located on Naryn river. The Chuy river is channelled into a major irrigation canal along the Kazakh border. The Sary Jas, Inylchek and Ak-shyrak rivers flow east to China's Tarism basin.
    CLIMATE
In the mountains, the weather resembles that of Bishkek but is more extreme: nights will be much cooler, even in mid-summer. Night temperatures of -30C or lower are not uncommon in winter - even worse in Naryn or Sussamir (whereas in Bishkek, -15C would be considered very cold.)

    Geography
The Kyrgyz Republic is located in the heart of the Eurasian continent. The country occupies a strategic location on the Silk Road - between the markets of the former Soviet Union and Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, and China. Stretching 900 km from east to west and 425 km from north to south, Kyrgyzstan's total landmass is 199.9 thousand square kilometres, which is about the size of Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Portugal combined. The northernmost part of the country is on the same latitude as Rome, and the southernmost end is on a level with the island of Sicily. The borders of the Republic generally follow natural boundaries - mountain ranges and rivers. Kyrgyzstan borders on Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the south, and China to the south and east. Kyrgyzstan is remarkable for its natural beauty. It is a country of sunshine, high snow-covered mountains, deep gorges cut by swift rivers and 1,923 mountain lakes. The country's generally mountainous terrain has an average elevation of 2,750 metres above sea level. Because of differences in elevation and degree of shelter, the climate of the Republic differs widely. In the summer months, travellers can spend part of a single day in a sunny valley, in a flowering meadow high in the mountains, and in glaciers above the clouds. Extensive mountain ranges featuring ridges, deep gorges, wide steppe valleys and virgin forests are complemented by more than 40,000 rivers and streams that provide irrigation and a vast potential for hydroelectricity production.

Alamedin Valley, a day's bus ride south of the capital, Bishkek (2000m elevation). During last year's summer break from study at APU I spent twelve weeks working in and travelling around the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan.
My time spent working in Bishkek mainly involved doing tasks like painting, or fitting doors and windows, but it was also a time spent getting to know some of the Kyrgyz people I worked with. Most were keen to share their life stories, or tell me that they liked English football teams, and most would offer their intriguing perspectives of what life in the UK must be like. Village chiefs sitting at the head table during a traditional mountain village wedding in San Tash. Kyrgyz, Kazaks and Dungans were in attendance. The three weeks I was not working, I spent travelling around the country. Public transport is, shall we say, unreliable at all times, but great fun and very cheap. Kyrgyzstan is arid and mountainous, and home to several large freshwater lakes. The rural population of Kyrgyzstan live a more traditional lifestyle than their city counterparts. True to their Muslim faith, and great horse-lovers, many even continue to live a nomadic existence in portable felt houses known as yurts.

World Geography http://www.peacecorps.gov/wws/guides/kyrgyzstan/econ.html Students will analyze economic issues in Kyrgyzstan from a spatial point of view. The shift to a market-driven economy has been difficult for Kyrgyzstan, as it has for other former Soviet republics. Soon after independence, the Kyrgyz government launched an economic reform program. The goal was to move away from a centrally planned economy to one in which economic decisions are determined primarily by market forces and consumer preferences. Daily Activities Schedules http://www.peacecorps.gov/wws/lessons/women/index.html This lesson is meant to identify the routine labor demands of girls and boys in their daily lives. The lesson will also allow students to compare their own lives to the lives of teenage girls living in less developed countries. This information demonstrates the gender-based perceptions of the activities of each group. In this sense, the lesson helps to raise awareness with regard to the contribution that different groups make to overall household welfare in the U.S. and in less developed countries.
