Silk Roads Sites in the Upper Chuy Valley: Navikat (Krasnaya Rechka), Suyab (Ak Beshim) and Balasagyn (Burana)
The Burana Tower (photo: Jumamadel Imankulov) The Chuy Valley, located between Bishkek and Issy-Kul in Kyrgyzstan, was once one of the main political, economic and military centres in Eurasia, lying on the Silk Roads trading routes that joined Europe to China for some 1500 years. The main towns of the valley, Navikat (today Krasnaya Rechka), Suyab (Ak Beshim) and Balasagyn (Burana), were founded during the 6th century CE, later developing significantly and becoming unique centres of symbiosis between Indian, Chinese, Sogdian and Turkic cultures, as well as a connecting link between these civilizations thanks to their positions on the Northern Silk Roads. Peoples from India, Sogdia, Syria, Persia, China and the northern steppes settled in the towns, each bringing with them their own religious and cultural traditions. Navikat and the other towns of the Chuy Valley are mentioned by the Chinese pilgrim Hsuan Tsang, who visited the area in around 620 CE. The town of Krasnaya Rechka (Navikat) has long been one of the most important of all the urban settlements in the Chuy Valley and in the Tien-Shan region. Archaeological excavations in and around the town have revealed a Zoroastrian fire altar and grave site in the western suburbs, Nestorian Christian votive stones in the citadel, and two Buddhist temples south of the town walls.

Kyrgyz music Musical instruments
The roots of Kyrgyz culture go back to the ancient times and an important part of this culture is musical culture of Kyrgyz people.
The Kyrgyz tribes came from Yenisei and this pre-Islamic musical culture has been reflected in the musical instruments and folklore from the ancient times till present.
Inhabitants of Yenisei river area have always been famous for their throaty singing, and their music based on the interchanging of voice and instrument.
From the ancient time Kyrgyz people adapted to apply handy natural materials for manufacturing of musical instruments, the use that permitted to convey the spirit of nation.
There are many various Kyrgyz national instruments, which differ from each other by the palette and diapason of sounding. The most important place in Kyrgyz art belongs to instrumental music. All inhabitants of a nomad group - from children to the elderly would gather together in order to listen the master instrumentalist's play. The most fascinating and interesting holidays were the times of the music competitions. Also, an instrumental ensemble was an essential element of military campaigns. The main feature of the distinctive style of Kyrgyz music is the images it conjures in the mind. There is a very wide picturesque range: from heroics with dramatic (epic) effects, to the beauty of natural scenery (mountains, trees and streams) and domestic themes.

Religion According to the Constitution, the Kyrgyz Republic is a secular state - there is no state religion. Religious political parties are banned. However, religious institutions do have to be registered. Most of the Kyrgyz would claim to be Muslim - although their religion sits lightly on their shoulders, especially in the North. This may be because, as nomads, some of the traditions were more difficult to introduce and maintain than in settled communities - or simply a symptom of the easy going nature of the people. In the South of the country where there are more Uzbeks, religion is a stronger influence and visitors should be sensitive to local sensibilities - especially when visiting certain sites, or in the month of Ramadan, or when consuming alcohol. In deference to religious sensibilities, the government have incorporated a number of religious holidays into the official calendar: Nooruz - New Year - which is always celebrated on March 21st Orozo Ait and Kurman Ait which mark the beginning and end of Ramadan and as such are moveable feasts Orthodox Christmas - January 6th. (Remember - it is a predominantly Muslim country!)

Kyrgyzstan
In Central Asia lies a wonderful mountainous land crossed with thick mountain ridges of the Tien Shan and Pamirs -Alai - a country of Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyzstan is a country of striking contrasts. This is a land of powerful mountains covered with eternal snow and alpine meadows with placers of flowers; impetuous rivers bordered with cliffs and foamy waterfalls; and steppes with the smell of wormwood - it is a land of blue lakes and green valleys. In Kyrgyzstan there is a pearl of Central Asia - the emerald-blue Issyk-Kul lake, the Alpine lake competing in its beauty with the lakes of Switzerland. A richness of relief forms, abundance of mountain lakes and cascades, walnut and fruit-tree forests, alpine meadows and glaciers, existence of the Issyk-Kul, exclusively favorable resort and climate resources, historic, architectural places for sightseeing, originality of a traditional material culture of Kyrgyz people, variety and wealth of the Kyrgyz folk-lore make Kyrgyzstan attractive for international tourism. The unique Alpine Issyk-Kul Lake remains unfrozen in winter and this, naturally, attracts a special interest. The Issyk-Kul lake looks lovely in any season. A number of resorts and rest houses located on the coast of the lake operate all year round. The mountains around the lake invite you to look at them closely. The mountain ridges Kungay Ala-Too and Terskay Ala-Too are abound in picturesque gorges covered with fur trees through which noisy streams rush down foaming.

state kyrgyzstan has a rich variety of languages, literature, folklore, arts, crafts, customs and communities that lend color and variety to Kyrgyz culture.
http://freenet.bishkek.su/kyrgyzstan/
Kyrgyzstan was born on the 31st of August, 1991 as a sovereign modern democratic state. Though young in years, it has a rich heritage and cultural continuity that dates back to many thousand years of antiquity and history.
Situated in the North-East of Central Asia it has a total area of 198.5 thousand square kilometres supporting a population of 4.700.000. Kyrgyzstan borders with Kazakhstan in the North, Uzbekistan in the West, Tadjikistan in the South West, and China in the South East.
Placed along the Silk Route on the historic crossroads of trade and cultural exchanges between China, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, India and the Arabian Sea, Kyrgyztan is home for more than 8O minorities and ethnic communities. Kyrgyz, Russian, Uzbek, Ukrainan, Germans, Tatars, Kazaks, Uigur and Tadjik among others. As a multi-national state Kyrgyzstan has a rich variety of languages, literature, folklore, arts, crafts, customs and communities that lend color and variety to Kyrgyz culture. The Kyrgyz Republic firmly upholds the equality of all communities. The official language is Kyrgyz yet Russian forms a common language of all groups.
The capital city Bishkek is located on the foot of the Ala-Too mountains of the central part of Chui Valley. In 1825 the Khanat of Kokand (region now in Uzbekistan) conquered and demolished the Kyrgyz fortress. In 1862 it was recaptured by Kyrgyz with the help of Russian Military detachments In 1878 the city became a district center called "Pishpek" after the Kokand conquest. In 1926 under former Soviet Russia the city was renamed Frunze after the communist leader and famous Soviet public figure who was born here. With the Independence of Kyrgyztsan in 1991 the traditional name Bishkek was restored. The city lies in close proximity to some of the most exotic and legendary places - Samarkand, Khieva, Bukhara, Kashgar; and in a region that glitters with historic figures of Alexander the Great, Tamerlane, Moghul Baber the Lion, Marco Polo, Umar Khayam.

Legends about Manas have been passed orally from one generation to another for many centuries and they have been formed into the epos, which contains more than 500.000 lines of poetry. It is the longest epic poem in the world. Real life events of the Kyrgyz people were reflected in the epos and it has been preserved and recited by the storytellers, known as manaschy, who are greatly respected by the ordinary people
Traditions and Customs Wedding customs are the most interesting - especially the tradition of kidnapping the Bride.
It has been a tradition from time immemorial that a man may kidnap a young woman he loves. His friends and relatives help him in this. Usually the man plans the day of the kidnapping beforehand. Relatives gather at his home and lay tables and cook a festive dinner. A room is set aside in the house and one corner is curtained-off (koshego). When the woman is brought to the house her head is covered by a kerchief - the sign of virginity, and she is placed behind the curtain. This custom is still observed in Kyrgyzstan today.
The marriage rite is followed by the "Otko Kirgizish" - initiation into the family hearth. Relatives invite the young couple to the hearth and the young wife is considered an equal member of the new family only when she puts grease in the pot.

Bishkek - Culture Osh Market Bishkek is the industrial centre as well as the capital of Kyrgyzstan, and the only town in the world named after a wooden plunger - a bishkek is a churn used to make fermented mare's milk. It's a relaxed city of wide streets and handsome houses, though it's wise to be wary of walking around backstreets late at night. The city likes to boast that it has more trees per person than any other Central Asian city - which may be true - but when the wind is blowing in the wrong direction, smog from the industrial plants on the city's outskirts can still eat your throat away. The city's history dates only as far back as 1825, so don't come here looking for architectural splendours or traces of the past - very little predates WWII. Travellers use Bishkek mainly as a jumping-off point for the Tian Shan mountains and Lake Issyk-Kul, and for the overland crossing into China via the Torugart Pass. The 4800m (15,744ft) permanently snowcapped ramparts of the Kyrgyz Alatau range loom over the city, beckoning travellers to move on and explore - who could resist? Click To Go Back

Karakol - Culture K arakol, located at the eastern end of the lake Issyk-Kul, is the principal town in the region. Tourism plays an important role in the local economy. The town is the best base from which to explore the lakeshore. Proximity to several mountain ranges allows for mountaineering, trekking, horse riding, and hunting. Karakol is a low-rise town, famous for its apple orchards and Sunday market (one of the best in Central Asia). Its back streets are full of Russian gingerbread cottages. Sunday Market is no match for Kashgar's Sunday Market, but is still one of the best weekly bazars can be seen in Central Asia. The big animal market in particular is a must-see: several blocks jammed with people from throughout the region - an array like you won't see down in Bishkek - here to buy and sell horses, cattle, sheep, pigs and other creatures Karakol has a central square, but the real centre is a small plaza and shop complex nearby nicknamed "Bugu Bazaar", built in the 1870. There is a banya (public baths) on Gebze Street near Toktogula, where a good soap is just a few som (or you can just use the hot showers or sauna at the back). Another banya is on Telmana near the Army Base. Chinese Mosque looks for all the world like a Mongolian Buddhist datsan on the corner of Libkhnehta and III Internatsionala streets is in fact a mosque built without nails, completed in 1910 after 3 years' work by a Chinese architect and 20 Chinese artisans, for local Dungans.

"Destination: Kyrgyzstan" offers a close view of a newly independent nation. The teaching materials, together with the accompanying video, will help students learn about the history and culture of this nation. These teaching materials will help students understand the influence of physical geography on culture, and will focus on the diversity found even in a relatively small country such as Kyrgyzstan. The activities in the guide have been grouped into three academic levels: grades 3-5, grades 6-9, and grades 10-12. The six basic themes of geography serve as the fundamental organizing structure of the units. The themes and the national geography standards based on each are found on pages 5-6 of this guide. Each activity is coded by number to the standards to which it best relates. Each lesson in this study guide includes the following sections:
  • Geography Standards lists the specific standard that is addressed by the activity.
