    Schools teach holiday diversity
New approach recognizes traditions from different countries, cultures
    BY ALLISON L. BRUCE
Of The Post and Courier Staff
As schools have turned toward a more generic "Happy Holidays!" on the signs out front in recent years, they also are trying to teach students about the diverse holidays this time of year. In the lower grades, the weeks before winter break have become a time to talk about different holidays around the world. For middle and high school students, it is a time to learn about giving and encouraging philanthropy. YALONDA M. JAMES/STAFF Reagan Cady, 5, samples vanilla icing as she decorates a gingerbread house Friday at Hunley Park Elementary School in North Charleston. And, though there is the risk that Christmas still plays a too-dominant role or that students whose parents don't want them making Christmas tree ornaments might feel left out if the rest of the class is doing it, educators say they try to make sure there is a sensitivity about the holidays that recognizes all of them. Claire Goldmintz's kindergartners at Hunley Park Elementary School were making gingerbread houses out of empty milk cartons, graham crackers, frosting and candy on Friday. Some made patterns of red and green gumdrops and candies on their houses, and many of the children were putting as much frosting on their fingers and candy in their mouths as they were on their houses.

    Author:
Joy R. Lazenby Background: Kwanzaa is a happy and spiritual holiday for African-Americans. The word Kwanzaa means "first" in Swahili, a language used in Africa, and has to do with harvest. Not all African-Americans celebrate Kwanzaa, and it has no ties to any religion. The main purpose or focus of Kwanzaa is to strengthen the black families. This celebration lasts 7 days starting on December 26 and ending on January 1. There are seven principles to live by that are celebrated during the 7 days of Kwanzaa. One principle is celebrated each day. The seven principles are then to be lived throughout the year to unify the family and remind them of their black heritage. The seven principles of Kwanzaa are Umoja (oo-MOH-jah) meaning unity, Kujichagulia (koo-jee-cha-goo-LEE-uh) meaning control of your own life, Ujima (oo-jee-MAH) meaning working together and responsibility, Ujamaa (oo-jah-MAH) meaning sharing money and profits, Nia (NEE-ah) meaning having a purpose or reason, Kuumba (koo-UM-bah) meaning to be creative, Imani (ee-MAH-nee) meaning having faith. Black families are encouraged to talk about these principles and learn from the past, so that they can understand what they are going through now, and what they could do in the future to make things better. Along with the principles of Kwanzaa, the flag, adopted by African-American liberation in the 1960s, displays the three colors of Kwanzaa; red, black and green. Red represents courage and blood. Black represents the skin of black people. Green represents the land and the harvest.

NewsWithViews.com When the government is promoting holidays and religions with beliefs which are contrary to the American Dream, patriots should wake up and smell the stench. Not only are they promoting religions and cultures that are Marxist in origin, they are belittling and outlawing Christianity. They have gone so as far as to say Gods Word is hate speech and Christians are dangerous. One example is here in Mobile, Alabama. A government sponsored group decided that the name of the Christmas Parade was not inclusive enough to make Jews and African Americans comfortable. For them to participate, the name needed to be changed. When the Christians balked, the organizers and the media claimed the children were in danger and needed extra police protection on the Hanukah and Kwanzaa floats. They even tried to cancel the parade to "protect the children." Hanukah is a great miracle and was celebrated by the Messiah and should be celebrated by all Christians along with all the feasts of Israel. But to bring it to the level of the Birth of Christ Jesus is ridiculous. It is a minor holiday in Jewish families when compared to the Passover and Yon Kippur. I have no problem with a Hanukah float in the Christmas parade, but does the name really need to be changed?

How to Explain Kwanzaa to Your Child
Kwanzaa is a relatively new festival, created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga as a way to help Africans and African-Americans celebrate family, community and culture. It's celebrated from December 26 through January 1 of each year. If you're planning to celebrate Kwanzaa with your family, you'll need to talk to your children about the festival's origins and explain the various symbols and rituals to them. Steps: Explain the purpose of Kwanzaa. The festival was created to strengthen Pan-African culture and community, and to reaffirm a common identity among African and African-American peoples. Discuss the difference between cultural and religious festivals. Kwanzaa is not a religious festival, so it doesn't conflict with the observances of Christmas, Hanukkah or other sectarian winter festivals. Talk about the festival's name. "Kwanzaa" is derived from the Swahili phrase meaning "first fruits," which refers to ancient African harvest festivals. Discuss the seven principles of this seven-day festival with your family. These principles are unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. Talk about how to apply these principles to your life, not just during Kwanzaa, but all through the year.

About Kids Creative Classics "More important than teaching a child what to think is teaching them how to think. I believe learning to look at the world as a place filled with endless possibility expands a child's horizon's and paves the way for a life that will rise up to meet them. My children's music and books work to teach children that no matter who they are or where they come from they can use the creative potential that lies in each of them to make a difference in their own lives and in the lives of others." - Bunny Hull In 1994, Grammy -Award winner Bunny Hull created multicultural label Kids Creative Classics to make a difference in children's lives and that's just what she's doing. Hull uses music as the tool to teach children about positive values, healthy self-image and most recently about diversity and peace. Kids Creative Classics offers parents and children an original, unique and entertaining approach to positive self-development and education for children by using entertaining songs, artwork and stories which remind them of their own creative power and teach them how they can each, in their own way, discover the wonder of life's possibilities. Hull does this by fostering an attitude which encourages children to believe in themselves and their dreams. "Every child needs to know the power they hold to make a difference in the world", says Hull.
