The History of Kwanzaa A non-religious holiday, Kwanzaa celebrates African-American heritage, pride, community, family, and culture. The seven-day festival commences the day after Christmas and culminates on New Year's Day.
Inspired by the civil rights struggles of the 1960s and based on ancient African celebrations, Kwanzaa has become increasingly popular over the last decade. More than 20 million people celebrate in the United States, Canada, England, the Carribean and Africa.
Kwanzaa's ancient roots lie in African first-fruit harvest celebrations, from which it takes its name. The word Kwanzaa is derived from the Swahili phrase "matunda ya kwanza," which means "first fruits."
Those roots are the foundation on which the modern holiday was built. Maulana Karenga, an African-American scholar and activist, conceived Kwanzaa in 1966 following the Watts riot. Currently, Karenga is chairman of the Department of Black Studies at California State University at Long Beach. Article excerpt from cnn.com. For the full article

    Kwanzaa Napkin Ring Craft
This makes a good craft for a Kwanzaa party. It's fairly quick to do if you do the first four steps prior to the party. Then let the party-goers glue on their own corn cobs, use stickers and sparkles to decorate, and inscribe their names. It goes well as a table decoration along with the matching Kwanzaa candle You will need a toilet paper roll, printer, piece of paper, scissors, glue, and crayons. Print out the template of choice.
Colour (where appropriate) and cut out the template pieces.
Glue the rectangular piece onto the tp roll.
Cut the tp roll into 3 pieces along the dotted lines.
Glue the corn cob onto the napkin ring to decorate.
    Alternative Decorating Ideas:
Use stickers, sparkles, sparkle glue, or felt to decorate the napkin ring further.
Use a marker to inscribe the name of the guest on each napkin ring.
Glue pieces of hard corn onto the ring to decorate further
Set your page margins to zero (FILE, PAGE SETUP on most browsers) so the templates print out fully. Close template window after printing to return to this screen.

    Kwanzaa Handprint Wreath
I love handprint crafts! I save each one in a special binder and peek at them every so often. It's fun to compare and see how they've grown. Materials you will need for this wreath are glue, scissors, and red, green and black paint or construction paper. There are two ways to do this craft. One is to trace the child's hand onto paper and cut out the prints. The second is to make paint handprints on the paper and cut those out.
Make twelve handprints (4 of each colour).
Cut out the prints and glue to form a wreath.
One idea is to write the name of a family member or important person in the child's life on each of the handprints if you choose this, you may need more or less than twelve handprints. As you write the names, you can talk about the person if you have photos, you can also glue a small head shot of each person in the center of the handprint.
You can decorate the wreath further with pictures (like corn cobs). These can be: stickers!

This holiday was created in 1966 in the United States by Maulana Karenga. Kwanzaa combines traditional African practices with African American goals and ideals. The word Kwanzaa means first fruits in Swahili. Kwanzaa centers on 7 principals with one principal being celebrated each day. Each night a candle is lit in a Kinara. The family discusses one of the principals and how it can be practiced in daily life in an effort to strengthen the sense of the African heritage. During Kwanzaa families and communities gather for an exchange of homemade gifts and toward the end of the holiday a festive meal called a Karamu is held. This is a lively event with African dishes, music, singing and dancing. Crafts and Activities:
