Kwanza-riffic! The Gumbs family knows their Kwanza and shares wonderfully! This is an amazing and enlightening little book on how to celebrate Kwanza with your children and (if you're still together) spouse. There are recipes (including one for an excellent spiced rum chicken) and ideas for party games (Coffee-pot suprise is our family's favorite). I highly recommend this book if you are looking to educate yourself in this misunderstood holiday. How to plan a Kwanza celebration This is one of the finest books I have read on the subject of a Kwanza celebration. It is a how-to book that will give anyone interested in learning the many aspects of Kwanza the tools to prepare and enjoy a memorable and festive occasion. In fact, this book not only discusses other Kwanza events but has many timely and tasty recipes that will make the advanced and beginner cook take notice.

Kwanzaa is a festive, 7-day African-American cultural holiday which originated in 1966. Created by Dr. Maulana Karenga, Kwanzaa is celebrated from Dec. 26 - Jan. 1. Each day of the celebration focuses on one of seven principles ("Nguzo Saba"). The name, "Kwanzaa", is taken from the Swahili phrase "matunda ya kwanza" which means "first fruits." Kwanzaa is not a religious holiday, but rather an African-American cultural holiday. It is a spiritual, festive and joyous celebration of the oneness and goodness of life, which claims no ties with any religion.

We hope you have fun doing them BATIK Batik is an Indonesian method of decorating fabric with wax and dye. The wax is painted over the fabric which is then dyed in a cold water dye. When the dye has set the fabric is then ironed or washed in hot water so the wax melts and the pattern of dye is left behind. You can try some Batik designs of your own as a way of livening up an old T shirt or making a distinctive wall hanging for your room. Do make sure that its ok to use the fabric you choose and that you have full permission to use the dye first - or it could all get very nasty! This site has instructions for making a kind of Batik T shirt by using glue instead of wax. (It is aimed at parents so many many apologies for the repeated use of the words "your child"! We know you are NOT children or parents - honest!)

    History
History of Hanukkah Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days and nights, starting on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar (which is November-December on the Gregorian calendar). In Hebrew, the word "Hanukkah" means "dedication." The holiday commemorates the rededication of the holy Temple in Jerusalem after the Jews' 165 B.C.E. victory over the Hellenist Syrians. Antiochus, the Greek King of Syria, outlawed Jewish rituals and ordered the Jews to worship Greek gods. In 168 B.C.E. the Jews' holy Temple was seized and dedicated to the worship of Zeus. Some Jews were afraid of the Greek soldiers and obeyed them, but most were angry and decided to fight back. The fighting began in Modiin, a village not far from Jerusalem. A Greek officer and soldiers assembled the villagers, asking them to bow to an idol and eat the flesh of a pig, activities forbidden to Jews. The officer asked Mattathias, a Jewish High Priest, to take part in the ceremony. He refused, and another villager stepped forward and offered to do it instead. Mattathias became outraged, took out his sword and killed the man, then killed the officer. His five sons and the other villagers then attacked and killed the soldiers. Mattathias' family went into hiding in the nearby mountains, where many other Jews who wanted to fight the Greeks joined them. They attacked the Greek soldiers whenever possible.

by Dorothy Winbush Riley A complete guide to celebrating Kwanzaa which includes information on its seven principles, ceremonies, traditional meals, clothing, gift giving, folktales, and proverbs. The book elaborates upon each of these principles through a combination of first-person narratives, poetry, folktales, quotations, and proverbs.
The section on Kujichaguila (self-determination), for example, includes poems from Nikki Giovanni, and Serena Gordon, and excerpts from Booker T. Washington's Up from Slavery and Michael Jordan's Rare Air. Ultimately, Riley says, the principles of Kwanzaa cannot be relegated to seven days at the end of the year; if we really want to take Kwanzaa to heart, we must live it in every moment.

    Kwanzaa Crafts
Marcia Odle McNair Celebrate the seven days of Kwanzaa - a holiday filled with joy and remembrance, the warmth of loved ones, simple handmade gifts, and above all, spirit and pride in oneself, one's family, and one's community. In Kwanzaa Crafts, many aspects for celebrating the holiday are discussed in detail to help the reader understand and participate in festive activities throughout Kwanzaa week. For example, each chapter begins with the name of the Kwanzaa principle in English and Swahili, the meaning of each principle is defined, the appropriate candle to light on the Kinara is mentioned, and suggestions are given for making each day positive and productive. Interesting text, recipes, and numerous craft projects to make ahead of time to be given as gifts or made with family and friends during a Kwanzaa celebration are included. Kwanzaa Crafts: Gifts and Decorations for a Meaningful and Festive Celebration is a powerful literary resource for this special celebration. Marcia Odle-McNair is an artist and educator residing in the New York area. She is a college-level Fine Arts instructor, leads workshops on the Arts for educators, and teaches grade school children.
