Editorial We imagine this lore has been passed down from generation to generation since before the Medieval period, the golden days of science and pharmacy in North Africa. When, amidst the curious tourists, a Moroccan comes seeking a remedy, it is this oral tradition that the vendors tap, not the knowledge of books written by foreigners. We could argue that much of what communities know about plants is no secret at all, since many food, timber, ornamental and even medicinal species are widely used, and well documented in the scientific literature. Even if traditional resource rights are not an issue, there are other questions that must be asked about creating local plant manuals. Second, are local plant manuals a priority for community members? Anthropologists often discover that plants are popular and non-controversial subjects for conversation, especially when compared to topics such as kinship, religious beliefs and local politics. But when it comes time for local people to decide on priorities for community development, they usually put land tenure, health care, access to clean water and education at the top of the list. Written documents - in the form of local herbals to improve primary medical care and botanical texts to enrich natural history curricula - can help attain some of these goals, but they cannot replace land titles, health clinics, water systems and schools.

Kota Kinabulu National Park Welcome to the real life Jurassic Park … the land that time forgot. Sorrel on her trek High from the ground Kota Kinabalu was known as Jesselton, the capital of Sabah. It was almost totally destroyed during World War II but today is a small, modern municipality. Two hundred thousand people live there and they are proud of the Sabah Museum's galleries of Ethnography, Ceramics, Natural History, Archaeology, History, Limestone Caves, and the world's largest art exhibition on the oil and petroleum industry. The Sabah State Mosque's resplendent dome is a famous landmark. Ninety kilometres away is south-east Asia's highest mountain, Mount Kinabalu, in the Crocker Range. The majestic mountain is 4101 metres high and growing, and has earned both geographical and mythological fame over the years. For most of its history it has been revered as a sacred site and is still the pride and soul of Sabah.

Members of The Scientific Exploration Society are conducting a 5 phase expedition under the leadership of explorer Colonel John Blashford-Snell. This expedition aims to prove that traditional reed boats of ancient design could have been used to navigate the inland waterways of South America for the purposes of trade and exploration and possibly also crossing the Atlantic Ocean from west to east. Navigating Bolivia’s formidable Rio Grande marks the fifth stage of our six-phase Kota Mama expedition, which we first embarked on back in 1998. One of the key aims of this project is to prove, through the course of navigating South America’s river networks, that the ancient people of this region used their waterways for trade and exploration and since 1998 we have successfully navigated 7,500 kilometres down rivers in Paraguay, Argentina, Bolivia and Brazil.

Islam in Malaysia Islam in China Islam in Malaysia Islam in the USSR Present situation of Soviet Muslims Islam in Albania Islam in Africa ... Islam in Japan Islam in the World Islam in Malaysia by Hj. Ahmad Kamar
Introduction
The recognition of Islam in this part of the world has been a fact since C.E. 674 (forty-two years after the death of Prophet Muhammad, pbuh) when the Umayyad ruler Muawiyah was in power at Damascus. Two hundred years later in C.E. 878 Islam was embraced by people along the coast of Peninsular Malaysia including the port of Kelang which was a well-known trading centre.
Before the coming of Islam, the indigenous Malays embraced an ancient religion with various forms of belief with some of the population belonging to the Hindu/Buddha religion. Life was structured and arranged in ways that showed the influence of more than one religion. This can be seen not only in the Malay's cultural patterns but is also part of the 'power' structure of state dignitaries and princes.
At the political level, the royal ruler and the head of state in most communities in the Malay world embraced the Islamic religion. The people were impressed and attracted by the provision in the Qur'an and the Hadith that mankind should be ranked on a basis of interpersonal equality. Those who for so long had been considered of

FAO/EC-LNV/GTZ Workshop on Tropical Secondary Forest Management in Africa: Reality and perspectives In collaboration with ICRAF and CIFOR Nairobi, Kenya, 9-13 December 2002
SUMMARY
Forestry is governed by the Forest Act of 1997, Chapter 63.01, which has responsibilities in carrying out Secondary forest activities on customary land, forest reserves, plantations and all other matters related to forest management. The National Forest Policy 1996 and Forest Act 1997 are administered by the Department of Forestry, which was established in 1942. Secondary forest management is new in the minds of many Malawians. The diminishing primary forest leads to the formation of secondary forests, if the causes of degradation can be stopped or minimized. In some way secondary forest management is similar to the management of Miombo woodlands and management of pole/fuel wood plantations in Malawi. This paper discusses the similarity between secondary forest management and woodland management practiced in Malawi. Secondary forests help many Malawians in poverty reduction, as it is easier to manage as compared to plantation forestry. They forests are managed for a number of reasons such as soil and water conservation, wildlife habitat, tourist attraction, non- forest products etc.

Wait for your turn to take over helm, youth leaders told By MARUTIN ANSIUNG RECOGNITION... Sairin (second right) handing over a certificate of participation to a committee member of the Keningau Umno Youth.
KENINGAU: Youth movements are important to continue the leadership of a political party but they must not become overzealous in wanting to take control over the party, said Keningau Umno chief, Datuk Sairin Karno. There must be an existing echelon of leaders already in place in any organisation to perpetuate its leadership and maintain stability as well as sustainability. He admitted figures in authority do not remain in power due to the process of change and the age factor. Therefore, the younger would-be leaders should be patient and wait for their turn to come at the right time. “The time will come for them to take over the helm of the party so they must be patient and in the mean time gain experience and enhance their leadership skills,” he said at a Family Day organised by the Keningau Umno Youth in Hotel Juta last Friday. He urged the youths to always place party interests first and stay true to the struggles of Umno.
