Southern Africa Food Crisis 2002-2003 Situation: Families desperate for food
It has been estimated that more than 14 million people in southern Africa have been affected by the food crisis that continued through 2002 and into 2003. Harvests failed in Zimbabwe and erratic weather, including floods and landslides, damaged maturing crops in Malawi in early 2003. Flooding that took place at the end of 2002 in Mozambique constrained the transportation networks there. HIV/AIDS has compounded the devastation. In the six southern African countries most affected by the food shortages, one in four adults live with HIV/AIDS and more than 2.5 million children have been left behind as orphans as a result of the disease. With the world's highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rates, the work force is dying, with crops dwindling and food security plunging.
Food distributions through churches in Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe reached out to the poorest of the poor, including families with heads of household who are female (often widows) or are living with HIV/AIDS and those families who support children ages five and younger, nursing or pregnant women, HIV/AIDS orphans, elderly or handicapped. Whenever possible, the food security efforts have been integrated alongside World Relief's Mobilizing for Life (HIV/AIDS) and child survival programs, that offer church-based educational projects, as well as home care through indigenous volunteers, to thousands in need.

Prior to 1963 Sabah was the British Crown Colony of North Borneo. Occupying the northernmost part of the island of Borneo, it is bounded on the northwest and north by the South China Sea, on the northeast by the Sulu Sea, on the southeast by the Celebes Sea, on the south by Borneo (Kalimantan), and on the west by Sarawak. Its total area, including the island of Labuan (a federal territory), is about 73,620 sq km (28,425 sq mi), with a coastline of about 1450 km (900 mi). jungle vegetation Sabah is extremely mountainous; the only lowlands of importance are confined to the coastal region. A number of broad upland valleys traverse the interior. The highest peaks are found in the western part of the state; Mount Kinabalu (4101 m/13,455 ft) is the highest summit on the island. Both the coastal belt and the mountain slopes are heavily forested. Streams are numerous and because of the rugged terrain are generally swift and interrupted by rapids. lichens on a rock The Kinabatangan River is navigable by light-draft vessels for about 193 km (about 120 mi) inland from the Sulu Sea. The Labuk and Padas rivers are also important waterways. The coastline is indented by several large bays and natural harbors. Tropical climatic conditions prevail throughout most of Sabah.

Weapons cannot on their own be used to explain the complexities of and the reasons for conflict. Nonetheless, it is pertinent to note that anthropologists have only recently begun to be forthcoming on the subject of warfare. As Hallpike (1973) bluntly puts it, warfare is a 'form of behaviour which particularly horrifies intellectuals'. If, as Fukui and Turton (1979) suggest, those intellectuals happen to be anthropologists, their aversion may be compounded by the fact that 'warfare is one of those rare topics of anthropological research, the overwhelming practical significance of which is immediately apparent to the non-anthropologist'.

As a first phase of this project, nine endangered languages and locations were identified, in close consultation and cooperation with experts and the governments of the countries concerned. The vignettes were shot during the months in October/November 2002, and were aired globally on the Discovery Channel, on 21 February 2003, the International Mother Language Day.The stories were filmed in Scotland, Sweden, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Argentina, and India.

1. GENERAL INFORMATION
Malaysia is located in the heart of Southeast Asia. Consisting of 127,000 sq. miles (330,200 sq. km), Malaysia is divided into two main regions: Peninsular Malaysia, which lies just south of Thailand, and East Malaysia, which can be found north of Indonesia on the island of Borneo. These two regions are divided into thirteen states and federal territories. Although East Malaysia occupies the larger portion of Malaysia's total area, it is primarily comprised of undeveloped land and jungles. Malaysia is a land of fascinating sights and attractions. Rich in colour and contrasts, her multi-faceted charm provides intriguing images that leave visitors to the country in awe. The natural warmth of Malaysians is legendary; wherever one goes, the friendliness and hospitality of the people would prove to be a very special experience. Malaysia is paradise. Its sun-drenched beaches, enchanting islands, diverse flora and fauna, forest retreats and magnificent mountains are among the best in this region. Many visitors have discovered Malaysia's other attractions: a shopping haven, a versatile conference venue, an incentive destination, an adventure land and much more.
