Lincoln Memorial
Open Daily: 8:00 AM until Midnight "In this temple as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever."
Dedication Inscription These words are inscribed above the 19 foot statue inside of this impressive memorial honoring Abraham Lincoln, who presided over the country during one of the most difficult times in American history the Civil War. More Americans lost their lives during the Civil War than all Americans who died during World War I, World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts combined. As a result of the tremendous carnage at the battle of Gettysburg, Lincoln delivered the famous Gettysburg Address, at one time memorized by school children throughout the nation. President Lincoln managed to rise above tribulation while practicing the virtues of tolerance and honesty and his life mind and character have become an enduring inspiration to the world. The memorial, classical in design resembles the Parthenon, the temple to the Goddess Athena in Athens, Greece. It symbolizes the unity of our nation with 36 columns representing the 36 states that existed at the time the memorial was dedicated in 1922. In addition to the statue are two inscriptions: the Gettysburg Address and Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address.

For more than two hundred years, African Americans have participated in every conflict in United States history. They not only have fought bravely the common enemies of the United States but also have had to confront the individual and institutional racism of their countrymen. - Lt. Col. [Ret.] Michael Lee Lanning, author, "The African-American Soldier: From Crispus Attucks to Colin Powell." BLACK AMERICANS AND THE NATION'S DEFENSE REFERENCE: VFW Magazine - February 1992. Published by Veterans of Foreign Wars, 407 West 34th Street, Kansas City, MO 64111 For 217 years, Black Americans have made a vital contribution to defending America at home and abroad. That service has taken them around the globe and involved them in virtually every American war.
The following brief statistical sketches provide a glimpse at the numbers of Black Americans who participated and died in the nation's defense.

REEL AMERICAN HISTORY home film projects for students for teachers ... list of films T here are many, many films that can be said to depict eras or aspects of American history, but for the purposes of the Reel American History project, and following the lead of Robert Brent Toplin and Kenneth M. Cameron , we focus on feature films (and some documentaries) based on "real people and actual events." In doing so, for instance, we necessarily and regrettably subordinate some classic films like The Grapes of Wrath , which captures the spirit of the Great Depression, because we are primarily interested in studying what film-makers do with a specific historical record. In this respect the advice to students about selecting individual film projects might be helpful in identifying the kinds of films we feel are most appropriate for our archive. This is a working list of almost 500 films, no doubt far from complete, and, since it will continue to change, we welcome suggestions for additions of titles as well as better ways to organize them. Links are provided for film projects that are already part of the archive.

113. Medal Of Honor Citations
The following is an index of the fulltext files by war. No Medals of Honor have, thus far, been awarded for service in the Gulf war.
http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm
The President, in the name of Congress, has awarded more than 3,400 Medals of Honor to our nation's bravest Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen since the decoration's creation in 1861. For years, the citations highlighting these acts of bravery and heroism resided in dusty archives and only sporadically were printed. In 1973, the U.S. Senate ordered the citations compiled and printed as Committee on Veterans' Affairs, U.S. Senate, Medal of Honor Recipients: 1863-1973 (Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1973). This book was later updated and reprinted in 1979. The breakdown of these is a duplicate of that in the congressional compilation. Likewise, some minor misspelling and other errors are duplicated from the official government volume. These likely were the result of the original transcriptions. The following is an index of the full-text files by war.
