The Role of "Manchukuo Candidates" in the Postwar Period
Many of the principal architects of Japanese and Korean economic development after World War II got their start in Manchukuo. Among them were:
  • Japanese Prime Minister Kishi Nobusuke , who served as industrial czar in Manchuria
Japanese Prime Minister Tanaka Kakuei , who served in the Morioka Cavalry in Manchuria, and his later nemesis Fukuda Takeo, who eventually toppled Tanaka from power. Tanaka's outspoken daughter Makiko served as current Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi's first foreign minister.
Japanese Lt. Okamoto Minoru ( Park Chung-hee ), the father of the South Korean (= Jp. zaibatsu
North Korea's "Great Leader" Kim Il-sung , who got his start as a guerrilla leader in Manchuria
North Korea's "Dear Leader" Kim Chong-il , who was born in Khabarovsk after his father was chased out of Manchuria

Korean mythology
Korean mythology Korea was a form of the Eurasian Shamanism Taoism . There has been a mass conversion to Christianity amongst the population since the Korean War. After the Korean War Koreans became embarrassed about their own mythology and though many figures are still alive in the consciousness of the general population, much of the oral tradition about the relationship between the mythological figures has been lost. While Tangun is still remembered as a semi-historical dynasty, much else regarding the family of Gods he descends from has been brushed away from the national consciousness. A prime example of this was during the 1988 Summer Olympic Games when there was a crack-down on the genuine local shamans out of embarrassment. There are now very few practitioners of the ancient Korean religions in Seoul and charlatans have quickly gobbled up the former shaman audience in the quest to exploit people seeking spirituality.

Foundation and Creation Myths in Korea and Japan: Patterns and Connections
Joo-Young Yoo
Faculty Mentor: Professor Mack Horton The present and future are constantly revealed through the past. A country's early chronicles provide an essential means for understanding its history, culture, genealogy, social structure, mythology, language and literature. With that in mind, this paper focuses on the relationship between Japanese and Korean mythologies as a means of understanding the links between these two societies and cultures. Despite the fact that Korea and Japan both have many myths which share similar motifs and beliefs, little in-depth work has yet been done on the comparative mythology of Japan and Korea. Japanese scholars have done most of the work in this area and they have primarily focused on the relationship between these two mythologies in terms of ceremonial and religious theory. For example, Professors Obayashi Taryo and Yoshida Atsuhiko of Japan have applied the important theory of "the tripartite system" to Japanese myths, following DumŽzil's system of comparative mythology. There are, however, still more comparative studies that need to be done on the mythologies of these two countries. While there are other works of perhaps greater literary interest, I have chosen to study two early works of Japanese mythistory, Kojiki and Nihon shoki , and two from Korea, Samguk yusa and Samguk sagi . Given the reasons for which they were written and the time during which they were written, I think these national histories are the most important for understanding early Japan and Korea. Of the many possible connections to explore between these two nations' mythologies, I will focus on 1) the origins of kingship, 2) the use of animal imagery in the foundation legends of both countries, and 3) the role played by shamanistic ritual. By carefully studying and comparing these aspectsÑthe patterns in both countries' foundation myths and the presence of shamanistic elements in Korean culture and in Japanese mythÑthe deep historical connection between these two cultures becomes clear, even if it remains unknown how each influenced the other.

Korean Ancient Myths
The origin of the Korean people is not easily explained. However, since historical records show that Ko Choson (Old Choson), was the first Korean kingdom, it can be taken as the original of the Korean people. The life of Ko Choson's heroic founder is described in the Tan-gun myth. The Tan-gun mtyh describes Tan=gun's birth from Hwan-ung, who came down from Heaven, and a bear-woman, who lived on Earth. As is generally true of mythology, this story is not some ungrounded fantasy, but is rather a means of explaining historical fact through the logic of symbols. Its symbolism is used to describe a historical fact, namely the political coalition that took place during Korea's Bronze Age. From ancient times, the Korean people have retained Tan-gun as the name of the hero who founded the first political federation of the Korean people. Tan-gun is apparently a historical person who lived during a specific stage of Korea's history, and to the extent that his memory remains within the national consciousness, he can be considered the ancestor of the Korean people. The Korean people have, throughout their history, constantly been threatened by the tremendous military might of neighboring nations such as China, Manchuria or Mongolia. In this precarious position, Koreans have found strength in the sense of themselves as a unique people who are descended from Tan-gun. The ancient records that referred to Tan-gun were lost in the chaos of frequent wars and invasions. During the Three Kingdoms period when Koguryo, Paekche and Shila vied for supremacy, the kingdoms found it difficult to promote the idea of a united people. Yet in the aftermath of Shilla's unification of the Three Kingdoms in 668, Koreans' sense of themselves as a people was evident as Shilla joined forces with the former subjects of Koguryo and Paekche to drive away the Chinese Tang forces.

Myth and Meaning: The famous myth scholar Joseph Campbell is one of my heroes. Here you can find an email discussion community devoted to Professor Campbell. One of Campbell's students, author and filmmaker Phil Cousineau , is also online. Myth is an important part of the psychology of Carl Jung , one of Campbell's primary influences. Here's an excellent Jung Organization in Atlanta. I've written two articles on mythic topics for their newsletter. Mythology Web features articles, essays, resources, and an excellent discussion forum. One of the classic pioneering early works in the field of comparative mythology, Sir James George Frazer's The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion is available online. A monumental study in comparative folklore, magic and religion, The Golden Bough shows parallels between the rites and beliefs, superstitions and taboos of early cultures and those of Christianity. It had a great impact on psychology and literature and remains an early classic anthropological resource.

The Chinese character, ' ju ' for alcohol derives from a special pot used for fermentation. It has a pointed bottom and amphora-like shape, making it easy to separate out sediment that has settled to the bottom. The Korea word, ' sul ', originated from su (meaning water in Chinese) and bul (fire). This came to be abbreviated over time into sul . The term fired water came from the boiling appearance of fermenting liquid. There is an old saying that goes "water was created by god, sul was created by humans." The origin of alcohol is steeped in mythology. In Egyptian mythology, Isis' husband Osiris taught the god of grain how to make beer. In Greek-Roman mythology, it was Dionysos-Bachus. In the Old Testament, Noah was the first to make alcohol. In Chinese mythology, princess Weechok created the first alcohol.

The Protectorate , in English history, was the period during which Oliver Cromwell was declared 'Lord Protector' of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland, under the terms of a constitutional document entitled the 'Instrument of Government', which had been drawn up by a group of his army officers. Under the Protectorate, Cromwell was dictator, backed by the army with a council of state and an ineffectual single-house Parliament under his control. Using a royalist uprising for a pretext, he swept away the traditional shire governments in 1655, replacing them with military districts administered by army officers.
