The Korean language is spoken by more than 65 million people living on the peninsula and its outlying islands (the Republic of Korea in the south and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north). Modern Korean has several different dialects including the standard one used in Seoul and central areas, but they are similar enough that speakers do not have trouble understanding each other. Hangul (ÇѱÛ), the Korean alphabet, was invented in 1446 by King Sejong and his court, and consists of 10 vowels and 14 consonants which are used to form syllabic groupings. ¿äÁò ¾È³çÇϼ¼¿ä?
The Korean Language At Cornell
The Department of Asian Studies offers courses in Korean in three levels: Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced Korean. The Elementary and the Intermediate level courses are in two tracks. The Korea 101-102 sequence is for true beginners who have had no or very little prior knowledge of Korean, and the Korea 109-110 sequence (Elementary Reading) is for heritage students or partial beginners. Heritage students are recommended to take a placement exam to determine the right course to take.

Korean - English Language Basics
The Korean language uses an easy-to-learn alphabet - han-gul (meaning "one-script") - dating from the fourteenth century, which was originally designed to depict the actual articulation of the sounds made by the speaker's mouth in pronunciation. han-gul originally consisted of 28 symbols, although 4 are no longer used.
