In an effort to expand the scope of the Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTL) website, the Ermal Garinger Academic Resource Center now maintains the Languages at KU website, which houses the most up-to-date information on all languages taught at the University of Kansas. This expanded site, which includes information on all of the LCTLs formerly included on this website, can be accessed at http://www.ku.edu/~language. The University of Kansas Less Commonly Taught Languages webpage was made possible by support from a U. S. Department of Education Title VI grant during AY 1999-2000 and 2000-2001. The project, entitled "Enhancing Less Commonly Taught Languages and Cultures" (Award #P016A990036) was directed by Associate Professor Beverly Mack and sponsored by the International Studies Program office. The creation of the LCTL website, which was only one aspect of the grant, was intended to increase awareness of and enrollment in seven of the Less Commonly Taught Languages at KU: Arabic, Hausa, Kaqchikel Mayan, Kechwa, Kiswahili, Korean, and Polish. Although focused on KU students, the websites also sought to become a repository of informational and multimedia resources for those outside of the university. The seven languages were chosen as geographically representative of the numerous LCTLs taught at KU and as integral parts of the work of KU's four area studies programs: African Studies (Arabic, Hausa, and Kiswahili), East Asian Studies (Korean), Latin American Studies (Kaqchikel Mayan and Kechwa), and Russian and East European Studies (Polish).
