05/30/03 deadline for 2003 San Francisco Korean American Media Arts Festival
05/30/03 deadline for 2003 San Francisco Korean American Media Arts Festival The San Francisco Korean American Media Arts Festival (SFKAMAF) is looking for films, videos, and multi-media works made by and/or about Korean Americans and Koreans. The San Francisco Korean American Media Arts Festival will run from September 5-7, 2003 at various venues in San Francisco area. Since 2000, KIMA, as a non-profit media organization, has played a vital role in Korean American media arts in Northern California and provided rare opportunities for the San Francisco Bay area community and Korean Americans to experience media articulations of Korean heritage and identity questions. We aim to establish an open community where different ideas and experiences of "Koreanness" are shared, challenged, and discussed in the Korean American community and further in mainstream American society. Entry Guideline Eligible Categories: Documentary, Narrative, Music Video, Experimental, Youth-made, Animation, and others

Involuntary Language Loss Among Immigrants: Asian-American Linguistic Autobiographies

Despite decades of research findings to the contrary, there is still a common belief that bilingualism is bad for children and unpatriotic, and that the only way to be a true American is to leave behind any other language and allegiance that might be in your background. Childrenboth long-term Americans and immigrants-often buy into this belief system. At the same time, however, there is a strong feeling among many immigrant families that it is important to preserve ties with the old country and to maintain their heritage language. It is usually the goal of the parents for their children to learn English fluently and adapt to their host country but not forget their heritage language. To the parents' disappointment (and ultimately to the regret of the child), this goal is only rarely fully achieved. It is commonplace for fluency in the first language to decline as English improves, so that by the end of the high school years, children are at best semi-speakers of their heritage language. This digest draws on a set of linguistic autobiographies written by Asian-American college students in this author's classes at the University of California at Berkeley over the last several years, and examines the pattern of language shift that takes place in the young first- and second-generation student and why this shift takes place. It also looks at the efforts families make to keep their heritage language strong (and why those efforts often do not work) and at those rare people who have succeeded in becoming bilingual, and what happened to make it possible.

Collaboratively compiled and edited by Elaine Kim (Professor of Asian American Studies, University of California - Berkeley) and Laura Kang (Associate Professor of Womens Studies and Comparative Literature, University of California - Irvine), Echoes Upon Echoes: New Korean American Writings is an impressive and seminal anthology of the literary writings of Korean Americans. These brief stories, poems, vignettes, and insights contain a unique emotional core and offer a wide variety of perspectives upon the dual challenge of finding a personal ethnic identity while adapting to the unending press of mainstream culture. Echoes Upon Echoes is a very highly recommended contribution to Asian American Literature collections and supplemental reading lists.

Asian American Literature: A Selective Bibliography Anthologies Bibliographies Consulted Chinese American Japanese American ... Korean American 1951-Present Chinese American Japanese American Filipino American Korean American ... Southeast Asian American This bibliography was prepared originally in 1995 at the request of Dr. Sari Miller-Antonio, Associate Professor of Anthropology and Ethnic Studies for use in her classes: Contemporary Asian American Studies and Asian American Images in the Arts and Media . It continues to be updated semi-annually.
This bibliography represents primarily fiction written by Asian American writers and is divided into two parts: pre 1950 and post 1950 literature. This division reflects the history of Asian immigration patterns to the US and the growth of Asian American communities. Students in Dr. Miller-Antonio's classes are asked to choose one book from the early literature and one from the post World War II literature and prepare a critical analysis that discusses how the book illustrates the history of Asian immigration to the US or how it explores topics such as representation of Asian American women, ethnicity and identity of self, family and community.

Scattered But Strong
Korean American results from the 2000 Census
Special to AsianWeek With signs of scattering and a leveling off of immigration, the 2000 Census report shows a number of surprising changes for the Korean American community. According to Eui-Young Yu, a sociology professor at Cal State Los Angeles and director of the Census Information Center for the Korean American Center, just over one million Koreans were counted in the United States, which was a little less than what the community has expected. The largest concentration of Korean Americans is found in the five-county-area of Los Angeles (Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside and Ventura counties). About one quarter of all of the Koreans who live in the United States reside in this particular region. The second largest area is the New York region, including New York City, Northern New Jersey and the Connecticut-Long Island area. This area constitutes about 16 percent of the entire Korean population in this country.
