Today there are almost a million korean americans. They have continued their earlypatterns of not being as concentrated as other asian groups in particular
http://www.msmc.la.edu/ccf/LAC.Korean.html
Cultural Connections Journey A small number of Koreans immigrated to the United States in the early years of the twentieth century to work on Hawaiian sugar plantations. The difficult working conditions on the plantations motivated some Korean Americans to move to the mainland where many continued in agricultural work. Their numbers were so limited that they were a fairly dispersed group, not gathering in enclaves as other immigrants have. On the mainland, they experienced the same kinds of discrimination that other Asian groups encountered including being prohibited from attending school with whites in San Francisco, being unable to intermarry with whites (California Anti-Miscegenation Law, 1901) and being unable to own land in California (1913 Alien Land Law). The years from 1910-1940, when Japan occupied Korean, were particularly difficult for many Korean Americans as they thought of themselves more as exiles than immigrants and felt they were without a country. Immigration quotas kept the number of Korean immigrants relatively low through the 1950's when most of the immigrants were Korean War brides, orphans, or students. In 1965, the Immigration Act abolished the quota system that had restricted the numbers of Asians allowed to enter the United States. Large numbers of Koreans, including some from the North that have come via South Korea, have been immigrating ever since, putting Korea in the top five countries of origin of immigrants to the United States since 1975. The reasons for immigration are many including the desire for increased freedom, especially for women, and the hope for better economic opportunities. In South Korea, which is roughly the size of Maine and has a population density second only to Bangladesh, there is an oversupply of college graduates including many engineers, nurses, and doctors.

While the Pan Asian community is composed of multiple, ethnic subgroups, it is often treated as a single group for which one health promotion program will be applicable for all of its cultural subgroups. Compounding this stereotypical view of the Pan Asian community, there is sparse data about the cultural subgroups' similarities and dissimilarities. The Asian Grocery Store based cancer education program evaluation data provided an opportunity to compare data collected under identical circumstances from members of six Asian American cultural groups.

A New KSA, DDKY, and Korean Life Tradition by Kevin Quan
On April 13th, at 8PM in the SAC Auditorium, a new tradition began for Stony Brook's Korean Students Association, joined by DDKY, SBU's traditional Korean drumming troupe, and Korean Life, a Korean language radio show on WUSB. As the lights fell, Korean Night 2002 began and it marked an accomplishment for the Koreans Students Association. As M.C. Rex Rhee said, the purpose of putting on a Korean Night was not to compete with other groups and organizations, but to give Stony Brook students a venue to display Korean culture and talent and educate the Stony Brook University community at large. On this Saturday night, a packed SAC auditorium crowd was entertained with humor, traditional Korean clothing and contemporary clothing designed by Korean Fashion Artists, Tae Kwon Do performances, dance segments spotlighting Korean Pop Culture, a step performance by the brothers of Lambda Phi Epsilon, Korean cultural drumming performances by Dung Duk Koong Yi (DDKY), a ballad in English and Korean, and much more. Asian Americans and hip-hop
BY OLIVER WANG It's been a long time coming, but Asian American hip-hop is finally breaking across the horizon. Asian American youths have long been a vital part of the hip-hop culture, a youthful style and music that defies easy categorization-as fans (hip-hoppers), breakdancers (B-boys), DJs (turntablists), writers (graffiti artists) and MCs (rappers). But their contributions have long gone unrecognized by many who perceived the music and culture in monochrome black and white. Asian American performers began emerging in the early 1990s, especially at college and community events. Politically-charged Asian American rap groups like the Asiatic Apostles (Davis, Calif.), Yellow Peril (New Jersey), and the Seoul Brothers (Seattle) started making small waves; while in the Bay Area and Los Angeles, squads of mostly Filipino American DJs and dancers were gaining notoriety. In more recent years, more groups have started to come out on the popular front, including L.A.'s Key Kool and DJ Rhettmatic, a Japanese American/Filipino American duo who released an independent album in 1995, Kosmonautz. But until the past month, there had been little else heard from Asian American groups.

Asian Americans have the second highest female suicide rate among 15-24 year-olds and the highest rate of depressive symptoms for adolescents among all racial/ethnic and gender groups.
NAWHO is committed to addressing racial and ethnic disparities in mental health that contribute to these startling figures. The Empowering Avenues program will increase access for Asian American women to culturally competent mental health prevention and treatment services. Furthermore, it will work to reduce the stigma around mental health issues through education and outreach, and empower Asian American women and build the capacity of community-based organizations as leaders and advocates for mental health.

Asian American
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
An Asian American is a person of Asian ancestry or origin who was born in or is an immigrant to the United States The term "Asian American" is credited to the historian Yuji Ichioka who, in the late 1960s, used it to describe members of a new pan-ethnic radical political identity who shared common histories, experiences, and goals. This term has largely replaced the politically loaded term "oriental" (that referred to Western notions of a subjugated colonial "other", fr. orientalism ), which was popularly used before the 1990s to describe East Asian peoples regardless of nationality, upbringing, or origin. Although immigrants from the " Middle East " (Western and Central Asia) are geographically Asian, they have generally neither been sufficiently visibly distinct as a group in America nor have they historically arrived in such large numbers to warrant attention as a major American racial or ethnic group until very recently (see ). As a result, they are not considered by most Americans to be typical Asians or Asian Americans, but identified by other means, such as " Arab Americans ". For these same reasons, northern Asians such as Siberians and peoples from former

Unlike in World War II when there was the JapaneseAmerican 442d RCT,there were no separate asian-American units during the korean War.
http://korea50.army.mil/history/factsheets/asian.shtml
Photo Caption: Intelligence personnel of the 2d Infantry Division question a captured Korean guerilla. October 1950 Background: World War II Substantial numbers of Asian-Americans served in America's armed forces during World War II, but the total number is unknown. Some 25,000 Japanese-Americans had proved their loyalty in uniform. More than 6,000 Nisei (first-generation, American-born Japanese) trained as interpreters and translators at the Army's Military Intelligence Service (MIS) Language School in Minnesota and 3,700 MIS linguists served in combat. The U.S. Army's 442d Regimental Combat Team (RCT), comprised of about 4,500 Japanese-Americans, fought heroically in Italy and Central Europe. The unit received more than 18,000 individual decorations and seven Presidential Unit Citations. More than 20,000 Chinese Americans served in the armed forces, many as integrated members of Army units. Smaller numbers of Filipino-Americans and Korean-Americans formed small units for the nation's war effort. Numbers Served and Their Jobs Unlike in World War II when there was the Japanese-American 442d RCT, there were no separate Asian-American units during the Korean War. The Department of the Army dropped the designation "Asian-American" after World War II, so even an approximate number for the Korean War has not been determined. But the National Japanese-American Historical Society has estimated that 5,000 Nisei served in Korea with American forces and concluded that 213 of them lost their lives. Several units did remain predominantly Asian-American like the 100th Battalion, 442d Infantry, U.S. Army Reserve and the 5th Regimental Combat Team, both from Hawaii.

Introduction Asian American Overview Asian American Bibliography Asian American Book Links ... For Grown-Ups Introduction by Children's Author Greg Leitich Smith (Japanese-German American) The field of Asian American children's and young adult literature includes many wonderful books poetically written and exquisitely illustrated. The number of children's authors and illustrators working from the relevant communities is steadily on the rise, and some of these folks like Yumi Heo, Allen Say, An Na Linda Sue Park , Janet Wong, Lisa Yee, and Laurence Yep have received great critical acclaim.
Books featuring Japanese, Chinese, and Korean characters while still limited in number are far more prevalent than those reflecting any other Asian or Asian American community, especially the Southeast Asian. We hope to see more quality books reflecting the diversity of Asian American life in the future.
