Health Problems in Asian American/Pacific Islander and Native Hawaiian Women
Who are Asian American/Pacific Islander and Native Hawaiian women in the United States? Asian American/Pacific Islanders and Native Hawaiian women represent one of the fastest-growing and most diverse populations of women in the United States. Asian Americans represent a number of groups, including women from Vietnamese, Korean, Asian Indian, Japanese, Filipino, Cambodian, Laotian, and Chinese descent. Among Pacific Islanders are women who are Hawaiian, Samoan, Guamanian, Tongan, and Fijian. So, this population has a vast array of languages and cultures. Some of these women are 4th and 5th generation Asian Americans, while 75% are recent immigrants and refugees. Native Hawaiians and American Samoans are part of the Asian-American population, but they are native to this country, not immigrants. Last Updated: August 2003 Home About Us Contact Us Site Index ... WOMEN OF COLOR HEALTH DATA BOOK FACTORS AFFECTING THE HEALTH OF WOMEN OF COLOR Asian Americans Although health issues for Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans often are analyzed jointly, in this fact book the groups are separated. Native Pacific Islanders are considered Native Americans and are discussed with American Indians/Alaska Natives. (See discussion of Pacific Islanders in section on Native Americans.) Asian populations are discussed together. This change is made because native Pacific Islanders are only 5 percent of the Asian and Pacific Islander total and often have health outcomes more akin to those of American Indians/Alaska Natives than to Asian subpopulations. In addition, native Pacific Islanders are not immigrants to the United States as are Asian populations. Thus, an effort has been made throughout to disaggregate Asians from Pacific Islanders whenever possible, and to display data for the groups separately. Aggregate statistics for Asians and Pacific Islanders are used, however, when they are the best available. Asian Americans are immigrants to the United States (and their descendants) from more than 20 countries who speak more than 100 different languages. They come from places such as China, India, Japan, the Philippines, Korea, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand and represent more than 60 different ethnicities (22). In 1990, the largest subpopulations (in descending order) were persons of Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Asian Indian, Korean, and Southeast Asian ancestry. By the year 2000, Filipinos are projected to be the largest Asian subpopulation, followed by Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese Americans, in that order (120).

For Asian Americans, however, the situation appears to be reversed, which may be yet another reflection of the power of the dominant culture. Novelist Amy Tan is more widely read than novelist Shawn Wong; comedian/actor Margaret Cho got a shot at a network television series, while Russell Wong had to settle for starring in the syndicated Vanishing Son ; and Asian American women anchor local news broadcasts across the country, while Asian American men occupy less visible positions as field reporters. The Joy Luck Club Picture Bride , and Double Happiness focus on women's lives. David Henry Hwang's Tony Award winning play, M. Butterfly , the story of a Chinese man who convincingly masquerades as a woman in order to spy on a French diplomat, puts it thus: "Being an Oriental, I could never be completely a man." In the American popular imagination, Asian women are depicted as ultrafeminine sexual objects for white men, and that sexual formula leaves Asian men literally out of the picture. For example, a recent episode of the CBS television series

WHAT DO WE WANT FROM MAYOR DALEY?
    2. Allocate additional resources to organizations serving Asian Americans in poverty and need.
    3. Support the slating of qualified Asian Americans to elected office.
Mayor Daley should meet with the Asian American Institute and community leaders to discuss these three concerns. TALKING POINTS
    1. We are not the model minority. Asian Americans face discrimination and poverty. The model minority myth hides the reality of racism that still exists.
    2. Affirmative action is still necessary. If we stay quiet and allow Asian Americans to be excluded from the program, who will be net? WHAT CAN YOU DO?

New York’s Korean population grew in the 1990s and comprises the city’s third-largest Asian group. Most Korean New Yorkers immigrated recently and live in Queens. Other distinctive traits of the city’s Korean community, in relation to New York City overall, include less English ability but more formal schooling among adults, as well as a higher poverty rate for senior citizens. These are among the key facts in a census profile of New York City’s Korean American population, released today by the Asian American Federation of New York, a nonprofit leadership organization. Based on an analysis of 2000 and 1990 U.S. census data, the profile is the latest in a series of demographic portraits that the Federation’s Census Information Center (CIC), a source of census data and analysis, has prepared to expand understanding of Asian American populations. The Korean American profile is available on the Federation’s Web site at

    http://www.freethechildren.org/cultures/html/map/asia/asia-american.html
Asian Americans People from Asia have been migrating to the United States for nearly 200 years now. The first Asian immigrants came from China, and they were brought over by American companies seeking cheap laborers. Early Asian immigrants, mostly Chinese and Japanese, were met with resentment and racism by whites in the U.S. In addition to violent attacks, early Asian immigrants were subjected to a long list of anti-Asian legislation. One of the effects of this legislation was to make it nearly impossible for any new immigrants from Asia to come to the United States for nearly a century until the mid-1960s. As a result, the vast majority of the Asian-Pacific American population has come to the United States during the past four decades.
As with the other groups of racial categorization, the race “Asian” is problematic. It is based largely on geography, rather than on the race of the people. For instance, people from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India do not racially look like people from China, Japan, and Vietnam but are categorized in the same race because of their geography.

Frequently Asked Questions From the newsgroup soc.culture.asian.american What's an Asian American?
An American of Asian/Pacific Islander ancestry (Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Indian, Korean, Vietnamese, Pakistani, etc.).
Immigrants are "first-generation" ; their children are "second-generation"; their grandchildren are "third-generation"; etc. The different Asian communities often adapt and add to this terminology to better describe themselves to each other and sometimes those terms are picked up and used by Asian America.
For example: issei, nissei and sansei : 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation people (from the Japanese American community) 1.5 generation : someone who immigrated when they were a teenager (Korean American).
Some people count 1st generation as the first generation being born in the USA, however, this is not the standard usage of the terms. To avoid confusion, please use the generally accepted definition, given above.
There is often a big cultural gap between the first generation (who grew up overseas) and later generations (who grew up here) and is the topic of tons of Asian American literature. Often, language is lost somewhere between the first and third generation - making it hard for the different generations to communicate with each other. This further excaborates the gap.
What's the difference between Asian Americans and other Americans?
