In an "encouraging sign," the U.S. has heard through third-country contacts, including Russia, that the North Koreans have agreed to the U.S. demand that the talks be multilateral, not bilateral as Pyongyang had long insisted, the official said. Earlier Thursday the Russian Foreign Ministry said North Korean had confirmed to them it was willing to take part in six-party negotiations.

A collection of articles on North korea from the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.
    http://www.bullatomsci.org/research/collections/northkorea.html
NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION: North Korea This collection of articles explores a variety of issues related to North Korea's nuclear activities and missile programs. It considers the political and military-strategic motives and intentions that may be behind Pyongyang's quest for the bomb and the means to deliver it. It also looks at the West's response to these efforts, in particular the tendency of the United States to assume the worst about North Korea's capabilities in these areas. The North's nuclear activities have been a source of considerable tension in Northeast Asia for some time. Efforts after the Cold War by the United States and others to compel the North to open its nuclear facilities to IAEA inspections, as well as the North's increasing political isolation from the rest of the world and desperate economic situation, have made a bad situation worse. American intelligence also continues to be frustrated by its inability to obtain reliable information about Pyongyang's missile and nuclear programs, largely as a result of the North's elaborate efforts at deception, such as an extensive underground missile production and testing infrastructure. While efforts to engage the North in productive dialogue on these and other matters have not been a complete failure, relations in the region remain tense. For some, North Korea's activities are part and parcel of that country's desperate search for security. For others, it is simply a reflection of the regime's inherent aggressiveness and ongoing efforts to prosecute the Cold War on the Korean peninsula.

In the past decade archaeological excavations have shed much new light on the prehistoric society of Korea. At Seokjang-ri near Gongju, Chungcheongnam-do province, artifacts of lower Paleolithic industry consisting of chopper-scraper culture was unearthed in the lower most part of the site. Bifacial chopper or chopping-tool culture followed. Hand axes and cleavers produced by men in later eras were also uncovered. At Sangwon near Pyeongyang, numerous fossilized faunal remains from dietary debris of the early inhabitants of the Lower Paleolithic Age were discovered. D uring the Middle Paleolithic Period, Pre-Neanderthal and Neanderthal men dwelt in caves at Jeommal near Jecheon and Durubong near Cheongju. From the two caves, fossil remains of rhinoceros, cave bear, brown bear, maccacus, hyena and numerous deer (Pseudaxi gray var.), all extinct species, were excavated. Some bones of dietary debris were engraved with delineations of human faces as well as animal figures such as tigers, leopards, fish, birds, etc. These findings have led to the conclusion that Neanderthal man had the capacity to create art.

U.N., N. Korea agree to tame tensions
North and South Korea have a history of clashes, this one in 1999 SEOUL, South Korea The U.S.-led United Nations Command in South Korea and officials from North Korea have agreed to embark on a series of steps to prevent further clashes along the disputed sea border that separates the two Koreas. At a meeting Tuesday, the United Nations and North Korea agreed on the need for better communication, including regular staff-level meetings, to put a lid on simmering Korean maritime tensions, a command spokeswoman, Lee Ferguson, told The Associated Press. The talks at the truce village of Panmunjom came in the wake of a June clash between naval vessels from the two Koreas, which was their worst maritime skirmish in three years. The neighbors are still technically at war since they never signed a peace treaty at the end of the 1950-53 Korea war. In the past few years they have clashed several times over the western sea border.

Officials say at least 88 people are dead and 70 are missing after Typhoon Rusa pummeled eastern and southern areas of the country over the weekend. This article is mirrored here purely for the convenience of readers who
are unable to access the original link [Hearts and Minds] Will Korea Be Unified
    Under What Circumstances?
By Rhee Tong-chin, Ph.D. *The views expressed are the author's own and do not represent those of any organizations
to which he may belong. Under the prevailing conditions today and circumstances that can be conjectured in the future, Korea's unification is only a very remote possibility. When and how it may be achieved is a question that can be addressed only in a world of fantasy. Although no one today can realistically predict the scenario of a distant possibility, it might still be a useful exercise to speculate how the unification may one day come, by postulating (a kind of hypothetical "gaming") the likely circumstances under which it could or might be done. Exactly what international conditions must be met to enable Korea's unification? Although no one can define the smallest actual requirements that must be met before the unification can be achieved, one could still discuss the larger frames under which it could be realized.
