BEIJING, China (CNN) When North Korea admitted in October it has an active nuclear weapons program, Chinese officials were caught off-guard. "As for the nuclear issue of North Korea, we have learned about this through media reports. We are not aware of any details. Our position has always been to support the de-nuclearization of the Korean Peninsula," Zhang Qiyue, China's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said after North Korea's shock admission. Pyongyang's disclosure has prompted a major diplomatic dilemma for Beijing and a delicate juggling act to honor ties with its traditional ally as well as promote stability in the region.

Nuclear crisis (CNN) Former U.S. President Bill Clinton described it as "the scariest place on Earth." The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that divides the two Koreas is the most heavily fortified border in the world, bristling with watchtowers, razor wire, landmines, tank-traps and heavy weaponry. On either side of its 151-mile (248 km) length almost two million troops face each other off ready to go to war at a moment's notice. They have been on a hair trigger for almost 50 years, ever since the last shot was fired in the Korean War and an uneasy truce came into force. Officially that war has not yet ended no formal peace deal has ever been signed and the war could start again at any moment. Between North and South is a strip of rugged no man's land the DMZ proper averaging two and a half miles (4km) wide.

North Korea has also extended an offer to meet with the U.S. led United Nations Command next week to discuss their naval clash with the South in June. The U.N. Command has twice requested to discuss the issue with North Korea. "Today the KPA (North Korean People's Army) responded to a request from the U.N. Command for general officer talks to reduce tension in the west sea," Reuters news agency reported a command statement to have said. "The U.N. Command is reviewing the response from the KPA."

    SUMMARY
A sense of urgency and a siege mentality are real and growing in Pyongyang. In particular, the North's economy, which it has long defined as the real underpinning of political stability and military preparedness, is shrinking by all objective criteria. Still worse, there is no immediate relief in sight. At the same time, Pyongyang is slipping further and further behind Seoula situation that has potentially unnerving security implications. Seeking economic help and greater international legitimacy, North Korea in recent years has sought to reconcile with South Korea by promising nonaggression, reciprocal cooperation, and denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. But the regime remains doctrinaire, self-centered, and committed to political control, and has repeatedly undercut its soft approaches by reneging on such promises. The United States has also received numerous promises from Pyongyang. A number of policy approaches may be considered by the United States: engagement aimed at inducing Pyongyang into the community of nations; military, economic, and political pressure to underscore U.S. concern for the stability on the Korean peninsula; and "outwaiting"letting Pyongyang chart its own transition by refraining from action that can be reasonably perceived in Pyongyang as provocative and threatening, while avoiding any actions that would give legitimacy or assistance to the North Korean regime.

Some clashed with the tens of thousands of police as they tried to march towards the U.S. Embassy. "Move Away! Move Away!" demanded the demonstrators who were angry with the U.S. military court's acquittal of two U.S. soldiers accused of negligence in the deaths of two South Korean schoolgirls struck by a military vehicle. While there were some families who came with children, the bulk of the protesters were young Koreans calling for a revision of the Status of Forces agreement that governs the 37,000 U.S. troops in South Korea.

Dangers in U.S. approach to N. Korea
From Senior Asia Correspondent Mike Chinoy
North Korea has a million-strong army Story Tools SPECIAL REPORT What are the options? Where they stand N. Korea military might Nuclear development ... Nuclear crisis SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) As the U.S. focuses on a potential conflict with Iraq, some observers fear Washington's contrasting approach to the threat from North Korea is sending a dangerous message to potential rogue nations. With U.S. spy satellites detecting signs that North Korea is moving nuclear fuel rods out of storage at its Yongbyon reactor, there's a growing chorus of voices arguing that the regime of Kim Jong Il presents a much more immediate danger than Iraq. In his recent State of the Union address U.S. President George W. Bush said that the U.S. and the world "must learn the lessons of the Korean peninsula and not allow an even greater threat to rise up in Iraq." But the question is: "What are the lessons being learned from the current situation?"
