Akihito attended school and received tutoring. Among those providing him instruction was a Quaker from Philadelphia, Elizabeth Vining (who later wrote Windows for the Crown Prince, Akihito completed his formal studies at Gakushuin University in 1956. He married SHODA Michiko (now Empress Michiko) in 1959. Akihito became emperor in 1989 and has affected a more relaxed presence than his father. Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko have three children. The eldest, Crown Prince Naruhito, was born in 1960. He married OWADA Masako in 1993. The couple's daughter, Aiko, was born in December 2001. Akihito and Michiko broke with tradition by raising their children at home. Naruhito and Masako have broken with tradition by naming their own child. The University of Texas Map Library has a wonderful collection of Asian maps. Among these are maps from Madrolle's Guide Books: Northern China. The 1912 volume has a map of Southern Manchuria , two maps of Dalian (Dairen) [ ] and two maps of Port Arthur [ KATO Shidzue, a feminist and one of the first women elected to the Japanese diet, died at 104. Kato was a pioneer in the birth control movement and devoted over 70 years of her life to it. She worked with U.S. advocate Margaret Sanger (bringing her to Japan seven times, the first in 1922) and was briefly imprisoned as a result of her activism. Kato was born to an elite family and was married to Baron ISHIMOTO Keikichi at age 17. Ishimoto was a liberal who went to the U.S. in 1919 and brought his wife to be with him shortly after that. The couple's two infant children were cared for by his family. Ishimoto compelled Kato to make her way "independently." She studied in a secretarial program in New York. After the couple returned to Japan, the Baron began working for the expanding Japanese empire and the couple grew apart. Kato became involved with another man (who was also married). Only after many years was Kato given permission by the Imperial Household Agency to end her marriage to the Baron and to marry labor organizer KATO Kanju. In 1946 Kato Shidzue joined the Japanese Socialist Party. She was elected to the diet and served for 28 years.

    Prehistoric Korea
Early man first inhabited the Korean Peninsula roughly half a million years ago. In the past decade archaeological excavations have shed much new light on the prehistoric society of Korea. At Seokjang-ri near Gongju, Chungcheongnam-do province, artifacts of lower Paleolithic industry consisting of chopper-scraper culture was unearthed in the lower most part of the site. Bifacial chopper or chopping-tool culture followed. Hand axes and cleavers produced by men in later eras were also uncovered. At Sangwon near Pyeongyang, numerous fossilized faunal remains from dietary debris of the early inhabitants of the Lower Paleolithic Age were discovered.
During the Middle Paleolithic Period, Pre-Neanderthal and Neanderthal men dwelt in caves at Jeommal near Jecheon and Durubong near Cheongju. From the two caves, fossil remains of rhinoceros, cave bear, brown bear, maccacus, hyena and numerous deer (Pseudaxi gray var.), all extinct species, were excavated. Some bones of dietary debris were engraved with delineations of human faces as well as animal figures such as tigers, leopards, fish, birds, etc. These findings have led to the conclusion that Neanderthal man had the capacity to create art.

MOVIE REVIEW CHI-HWA-SEON: PAINTED FIRE DIRECTOR: Im Kwon-taek CAST: Choi Min-sik, Yoo Ho-jung, Ahn Sung-ki RUNNING TIME: 117 minutes LANGUAGE: Korean with English subtitles RATING: None WHERE: Varsity GRADE: B+ In "Chi-Hwa-Seon: Painted Fire," noted Korean director Im Kwon-taek ("Chunhyang, "Taebak Mountains") gets happy results by taking us through its paces one more time with fresh material: the legendary Korean painter Jang Seung-ub (Choi Min-sek), or as he is better known, Oh-won. The film, which won the best director prize at last year's Cannes Film Festival, opens in the 1850s as the artist is an abused street urchin who displays an unusual artistic gift to a man who will be his mentor through much of his life.

    • Civilization on the Korean peninsula has developed in close interaction with neighboring China and other cultures on the Northeast Asian mainland, and with Japan. The Korean climate is continental, similar to the northeastern United States, but with the precipitation patterns of monsoon Asia. Winters are cold and dry, summers hot and humid with heavy rainfall. As in Japan and much of China, the staple food in Korea has traditionally been rice, cultivated in wet paddy fields. Labor-intensive wet-rice agriculture, combined with this difficult topography and climate, meant that most of the Korean population was concentrated into relatively small areas and into tight-knit village communities. Social cohesion in traditional Korea was reinforced by norms of behavior strongly influenced by Confucianism from China.
    Cultural Influences
    • From the political unification of the Korean peninsula in the seventh century C.E. until the twentieth century, Korea was a centralized monarchy, ruled by a king, and until at least the fourteenth century Korea also had a powerful hereditary aristocracy. Unlike the warrior class in Japan, the military in Korea lost its elevated social status after the fourteenth century."
