Learn Korean can now be found at Learn-korean.net History of South Korea After World War II, a republic was set up in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula while a Communist-style government was installed in the north. During the Korean War (1950-1953), US and other UN forces intervened to defend South Korea from North Korean attacks supported by the Chinese. An armistice was signed in 1953, splitting the Peninsula along a demilitarized zone at about the 38th parallel. Thereafter, South Korea achieved rapid economic growth with per capita income rising to roughly 20 times the level of North Korea. South Korea has maintained its commitment to democratize its political processes. In June 2000, a historic first North-South summit took place between the South's President KIM Dae-jung and the North's leader KIM Chong-il. Korea is located Eastern Asia, southern half of the Korean Peninsula bordering the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea . Geographic coordinates are 37 00 N, 127 30 E .

The Legend of Tan-Gun
Pre-20th Century 20th Century Korean War Korea's Future
Pre-20th Century
- 57 B.C.:
Evidence of inhabitants in Korea from as early as 4000 BC exists in Korea. Legend has that the man-god Tan Gun founded the Joseon (meaning Land of the Morning Calm Kingdom in 2333 BC. Almost no centralized communities existed from then until three kingdoms emerged in the 1st century BC.
57 B.C. - 668 A.D.: The Three Kingdoms of Silla Goguryeo , and Baekje had similar ethnic and linguistic backgrounds. Koguryo occupied the northern part of the peninsula from the Chinese border to the Han River, while Silla and Baekche dominated the southern regions. All three kingdoms were heavily influenced by China, and Buddhism was introduced to Koguryo in 372. Various alliances were formed either with or against the Chinese until 660 when Silla allied with China to overthrow Baekje. Goguryeo fell shortly afterwards in 668.
The Silla Kingdom period marked the start of Korea's cultural development. Buddhism expanded and furled the construction of numerous temples and art works. However, despite Chinese influences, Silla remained largely tribal in culture. Society divided into distinct classes with a large semi-slave population supporting an aristocratic minority. Warlords began amassing power bases to the north and eventually took over Silla and founded a new kingdom- Goryeo
Korea's English name was derived during the Goryeo period. At this time the government codified the laws and introduced a civil service system. During this time Buddhism flourished and spread throughout the peninsula. Like other kingdoms before it, Koryo was also subject to internal strife and external threats, most notably from the Mongols who had taken over China. In 1231 the Mongols invaded Korea, forcing the royal family to flee to Kanghwa Island near Seoul. After 25 years of struggle, the royal family finally surrendered. The following 150 years saw continued Goryeo rule, but under the control of the Mongols. As the Mongols declined in power, so too did Goryeo. In 1392 a Korean general

History
South Korea Table of Contents A SMALL COUNTRY, approximately the size of Britain, Korea is located on a peninsula that protrudes southward from the northeastern corner of the Asian continent. It is an old country, whose people evolved as one nation from the seventh century until 1945, when the country was divided by the United States and the Soviet Union at the end of World War II. The ensuing cold war created two Korean governments, one in the north known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), and another in the south known as the Republic of Korea (ROK). The two Koreas engaged in a bitter war between 1950 and 1953 and remained divided as of 1990, even though the two governments began talk to each other in 1971. South Korea and North Korea took distinctly different paths of development after they were divided. By 1990 North Korea had emerged as a staunch communist society, while South Korea was evolving into a liberal democracy after many years of military dictatorship. The two societies, however, shared a common tradition and culture.
Origins of the Korean Nation
As is true of all countries, Korea's geography was a major factor in shaping its history; geography also influenced the manner in which the inhabitants of the peninsula emerged as a people sharing the common feeling of being Koreans. The Korean Peninsula protrudes southward from the northeastern corner of the Asian continent and is surrounded on three sides by large expanses of water. Although Japan is not far from the southern tip of this landmass, in ancient times events on the peninsula were affected far more by the civilizations and political developments on the contiguous Asian continent than by those in Japan.

HISTORY
North Korea Table of Contents PRIOR TO THE NATIONAL DIVISION of the Korean Peninsula in 1945, Korea was home to a people with a unitary existence, ethnic and linguistic homogeneity, and a historic bond of exclusionism towards outsidersa result of its history of invasion, influence, and fighting over its territory by larger and more powerful neighbors. This legacy continues to influence the contemporary Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK, or North Korea). There are other parallels between Korea's past and presentday North Korea. The traditions of Confucianism and a bureaucracy administered from the top-down and from the center continue to hold sway. Further, just as there was relative stability for more than two millennia on the Korean Peninsula, there has been relative stability in North Korea since Kim Il Sung came to power in 1946. As Confucian doctrine perpetuated the authority of the family system and the importance of education, so too were these elements paramount in Kim Il Sung's North Korea. Politics remain personalistic, and Kim has surrounded himself with a core of revolutionary leaders (now aging), whose loyalty dates back to their days of guerrilla resistance against the Japanese in Manchuria. Kim's chuch'e ideology also has its roots in the self-reliant philosophy of the Hermit Kingdom (as Korea was called by Westerners), and Korea's history of exclusionism also held particular appeal to a people emerging from the period of Japanese colonial domination (1910-45).

The history of human activity in Korea can be traced far into the Paleolithic period, about 500,000 years ago. The beginning of Korean history is often dated to 2333 B.C. when Dangun, a legendary figure born of the son of Heaven and a woman from a bear-totem tribe, established the first kingdom named "Joseon", literally meaning the "Land of the Morning Calm." While the historicity of the Dangun myth is disputed among scholars, it is known that ancient Korea was characterized by clan communities which combined to form small city-states. They rose and fell so that by the first century B.C. three kingdoms, Goguryo (37 B.C.-A.D.668), Baekche (18 B.C.-A.D.660) and Silla (57 B.C.-A.D.935), had emerged on the Korean Peninsula and part of what is now known as Manchuria. Ever since Silla unified the Peninsula in 668, Korea has been ruled by a single government and has maintained its political independence and cultural and ethnic identity in spite of frequent foreign invasions. Both the Goryo(918- 1392) and Joseon (1392-1910) Kingdoms consolidated their dynastic power and flourished culturally, while repelling intruders like the Khitans, Mongols, Manchus and Japanese. In the late 19th century, Korea became the focus of intense competition among imperialist nations, China, Russia and Japan.

JUN 10, 2004 is a significant year for all Koreans in that it marks thefiftieth anniversary of the country's liberation from Japan. Forthirty-six years, Korea had to suffer under the brutal and inhumane rule of the Japanese, and liberation meant far more than mere physical freedom from oppression. It was a chance to reclaim the country's place in the world and to restore its proud history. To commemorate this special occasion, KBS, as a public broadcasting system representing Korea, takes pride in publishing The History of Korea. The book was written with foreign readers in mind and is designed to provide an accessible, fair and objective overview of the country's history.
Korea is a proud country with a unique culture and tradition that are over 5,000 years old. Yet results of various surveys indicate that many people around the world do not have a correct understanding of the country's history, and information in this area has been relatively scarce. The purpose of this book is to address the inaccuracies or distortions foreigners may have in their knowledge of the history of Korea.
The book contains a comprehensive overview of Korea's history from ancient times to the present and is co-published by Radio Korea International of KBS and the National Institute for International Education Development under the Ministry of Education Korea, It is hoped that readers will find this easily accessible and fair and objective in its presentation of the history of Korea.

The country is located between China and Japan. It was once a large unified country that had governed territories in Manchuria as recently as 1908, and some territory in present-day Siberia. At one point, it was the centre for the very best silk in the world, as noted in ancient Chinese scripts. Korea was also known for having the world's best goldsmiths during the 7th-8th centuries. The publication technique of movable type was invented in Korea in 1232, long before Gutenberg introduced the concept in Europe. These types used Chinese characters and were initially mainly used to mass-produce Buddhist sutras.

Page xvi POLICY AND DIRECTION: THE FIRST YEAR Page xvii [blank] Page 1 CHAPTER I Korea, Case History of a Pawn The Soviet-sponsored government of North Korea, having failed to conquer its southern neighbor by less violent means, invaded the Republic of Korea on 25 June 1950. When the United States, with other United Nations, came to the aid of the South Koreans, a 3-year war resulted that cost more than 142,000 American battle casualties. The campaigns set in motion by the invasion of South Korea later were characterized as a "limited war." The fighting was deliberately confined in geographic terms, political decisions placed restrictions upon military strategy, and none of the belligerents, with the exception of the two Korean governments, used its full military potential. But there was nothing limited about the ferocity of the battles. Erupting from the rivalries of great nations, the Korean War was greatly influenced by domestic conditions rooted deep in the history of Korea, and by the topography of the peninsula where it took place. The Land Korea is a harsh Asian peninsula inhabited by a hardy, harassed people who rarely if ever had been completely free. War and tragedy form the main theme of Korea's history. Suppression and ill-use have been the heritage of its long-suffering people. Few habitable areas of the earth are more unsuited to large-scale, modern military operations. The rugged landscape, a lack of adequate roads, rail lines, and military harbors, the narrow peninsula, and, not least, climatic extremes restrict and hamper maneuver, severely limit logistic support, and intensify the normal hardships of war.
