Ancient history:
Millet Plant Several rich Korean kingdoms grew up in the first two millennia a.d. Shilla (668-935) occupied what is now South Korea. Its kings established Buddhism as the official state religion, but Confucian scholars and ideas also entered Korea. Near the southeastern city of Kyongju stand huge artificial mounds. They are the burial places for the members of the Shilla royal dynasty and they are loaded with gold and gems, especially jade. For more information on this subject: http://violet.berkeley.edu/~korea/history.html Royal Burial Mounds Korea and China: The Korean kingdoms were influenced by Chinese trade goods and culture. Korean writing systems (4th century a.d.), architecture, political systems, religions, and even musical instruments came from China. Koreans adapted these Chinese things and made them their own. Chinese scholars had devised a kind of printing system using carved wooden blocks. Koreans took this invention one step further and created the first world's first metal moveable type in the 12th century. Adaptation of foreign things for their own use is a historical characteristic of Korean culture, even today.

Advanced communication technologies now make it possible for people around the world to simultaneously experience significant historic events as they happen from virtually anywhere People cannot understand this rush of global information unless they know something about where it is happening, the people to whom it is happening, and the culture within which it is happening. They cannot understand the context of world events if their only basis for making judgements is a limited knowledge of their small corner of the world. The growing influence of Asian culture and the accelerating economic power of the Asian Pacific Rim make it vital to understand the rich history of that part of the world, to learn where nations of the Far East have been and where they may be heading. The Korean History Project is an educational organization dedicated to the research, production and online publication of Korean and East Asian history, to promoting history education and cultural understanding, and to making this valuable history resource easily accessible to a worldwide audience.

    Early History to Japanese Rule
Chinese and Japanese influences have been strong throughout Korean history, but the Koreans, descended from Tungusic tribal peoples, are a distinct racial and cultural group. The documented history of Korea begins in the 12th cent. B.C. , when a Chinese scholar, Ki-tze (Kija), founded a colony at Pyongyang. After 100 B.C. the Chinese colony of Lolang, established near Pyongyang, exerted a strong cultural influence on the Korean tribes settled in the peninsula. The kingdom of Koguryo, the first native Korean state, arose in the north near the Yalu River in the 1st cent. A.D. , and by the 4th cent. it had conquered Lolang. In the south, two kingdoms emerged, that of Paekche (c. A.D.

    Korea Yesterday
Korea has a long and rich history. It was a unified nation for 1300 years. At a time when Europe was declining into the contentious "Dark Ages" of the Medieval period after the fall of the Roman Empire, Korea was creating new art, architecture, literature, science, and religion, and developing a strong central government that allowed for long periods of peace and prosperity. The Choson dynasty of Korea, which lasted over 500 years, is one of the world's longest lasting and most stable royal lines. Their palace, Kyong-Bok (shown above), was built in 1394 at Seoul. Korea's past has a strong influence on its present. Physical reminders of the past are found everywhere mixed with the structures of today. The South Gate (NamdaeMun, built 1396 AD) of the ancient wall around the old city of Seoul shown below is surrounded by modern buildings, power lines, and autos. A proper understanding of Korea today rests on at least a brief look at its history. So use the menu bar at the left to see how Korea has changed through the ages. http://media.graniteschools.org/Curriculum/korea/history.htm
Korean History Korea is a modern nation with a history of over 5,000 years. The history of its culture can be seen in the Korean art and architecture that remains today. In Korea mythology there is a story of the birth of the Korean nation when a god named Hwanung comes from heaven and transforms a bear into a woman. He marries her and she gives birth to a son, Tangun.. Tangun establishes the first capital of the Korean nation in 2333 B.C. and calls it Joseon - Land of the Morning Calm. Ko (Old) Joseon is the kingdom that many Koreans believe was founded by Tangun. They probably lived in pit houses and had iron tools. Their walled-kingdom was near Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea. Prehistoric remains found throughout Korea indicate that early in the history of the Korean Peninsula sophisticated technologies were known by these inhabitants. These people believed that all objects had spirits which is a belief known as animism. They also believed that some people had the power to communicate with these spirits and this is known as Shamanism. Farming at this time included growing rice. This was about 3,500 years ago at the start of the Bronze Age. Many farm tools have been found from this time. There were many other nations in Manchuria and the Korean Peninsula during the Iron Age. In the 1st century B.C. Ko Old Joseon gives way to three nations. The first is Goryeo (founded in 37 B.C.) to the north which was in Manchuria and northern Korea. Goryeo becomes a buffer against the aggressive nations of China. Two other kingdoms developed, Silla (founded in 57 B.C.) in the south eastern corner of the peninsula, and Baekche (founded in 18 B.C.) in the south-western part of the peninsula. They become known as the "Three Kingdoms" although there was a fourth kingdom known as Kaya (founded in 42 A.D.)

The beginning of Korea dates back to 2333 B.C., when Dangun , the legendary son of the Heavenly God and a woman from a bear-totem tribe, established the first kingdom. Historians refer to this earliest era of Korean history as the Gojoseon (Ancient Joseon) period. A ncient Korea was characterized by clan communities that combined to form small town-states. T he town-states gradually united into tribal leagues with complex political structures, which eventually grew into kingdoms. Among various tribal leagues, Goguryeo (37 B.C.- A.D. 668), situated along the middle course of the Amnokgang River (Yalu), was the first to mature into a kingdom. G oguryeo''s aggressive troops conquered neighboring tribes one after another, and in 313, they even occupied the Lo-long area in China. Baekje (18 B.C.-A.D. 660), which grew out of a town-state located south of the Hangang River in the vicinity of present-day Seoul, was another confederated kingdom similar to Goguryeo. During the reign of King Geunchogo (r. 346-375), Baekje developed into a centralized and aristocratic state. T he Silla Kingdom (57 B.C.-A.D. 935) was located the furthest south on the peninsula, and was initially the weakest and most underdeveloped of the Three Kingdoms. However, because it was geographically removed from Chinese influence, it easily adopted foreign non-Chinese practices and ideas. Its society was markedly class-oriented and later developed the unique Hwarang (Flower of Youth) Corps as well as an advanced Buddhist practice.
