Early History to Japanese Rule
Chinese and Japanese influences have been strong throughout Korean history, but the Koreans, descended from Tungusic tribal peoples, are a distinct racial and cultural group. The documented history of Korea begins in the 12th cent. B.C. , when a Chinese scholar, Ki-tze (Kija), founded a colony at Pyongyang. After 100 B.C. the Chinese colony of Lolang, established near Pyongyang, exerted a strong cultural influence on the Korean tribes settled in the peninsula. The kingdom of Koguryo, the first native Korean state, arose in the north near the Yalu River in the 1st cent. A.D. , and by the 4th cent. it had conquered Lolang. In the south, two kingdoms emerged, that of Paekche (c. A.D. 250) and the powerful kingdom of Silla (c. A.D. 350). With Chinese support, the kingdom of Silla conquered Koguryo and Paekche in the 7th cent. and unified the peninsula. The Yi dynasty, which was to rule until 1910, built a new capital at Seoul and established Confucianism as the official religion. Early in the Yi period (mid-15th cent.) an efficient Korean phonetic alphabet as well as printing with movable metal type were developed. In 1592 an invasion of the Japanese conqueror Hideyoshi was driven back by the Yi dynasty with Chinese help, but only after six years of great devastation and suffering. Manchu invasions in the first half of the 17th cent. resulted in Korea being made (1637) a vassal of the Manchu dynasty. Korea attempted to close its frontiers and became so isolated from other foreign contact as to be called the Hermit Kingdom. All non-Chinese influences were excluded until 1876, when Japan forced a commercial treaty with Korea.

Bruce Cumings, Korea's Place in the Sun: A Modern History [According to the jacket blurb, Bruce Cumings is "director of the Center for International and Comparative Studies at Northwestern University." He does not use the title of "professor," but I understand he is one.] Bruce Cumings covers an interesting subject (Korea, especially since 1900), that has generally been neglected. His book is well-organized and well-presented. Nevertheless, readers should be cautioned that Mr. Cumings is a man of the Left, sympathetic to the North Korean regime (though not slavishly so), and eager to interpret US policy toward Korea in the worst possible light. Not being an expert on Korea, I cannot argue with most of his details; indeed, I believe the facts he adduces in support of his views are generally true. Nevertheless, I have caught him intentionally distorting context (See comments on pp 443-448 below), as well as omitting material facts that don't fit his thesis. On

Korean Politics
The beginning of Korean history is often dated to 2333 B.C. when Tan-gun, a legendary figure born of the son of a god and a woman from a bear-totem tribe, establised the first kingdom named Choson or the "Land of the Morning Calm". while the historicity of the Tan-gun myth is disputed among scholars, it is known that ancient Korea was characterized by clan communities which combined to form small city-states. They rose and fell until by the first century B.C. three kingdomes, Koguryo(37 B.C. - A.D.668), Paekche(18 B.C - A.D. 660) and Shilla (57 B.C. - A.D. 935) had emerged on the peninsula.

The Three Kingdoms
Korea's earliest recorded history is characterized by clan communities which combined to form small city-states. The city-states gradually united in tribal leagues with increasingly complex political structures. This state of affairs prevailed throughout the peninsula and southern Manchuria until roughly the beginning of the Christian era.

Korean Religion
Korea's most ancient religions are Shamanism, Buddism and Confucianism. All these played an important role in the country's early cultural development and have greatly influenced thought and behavior. chiristianity was rather recently introduced, but has spread rapidly to claim the largest of the following. There are other minor religions but we will be discussing Shamanism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Christianity.
[Shamanism]

Shamanism
Shamanism is the worshiping of the spirit or nature. This is the oldest belief in Korea. It is based on the belief that human beings are not the only possessors of spirits but that they also reside in natural forces and animate or in animate objects.
The shamana, or mudang in Korean, is an intermediary with the spiritual world and is considered capable of averting bad luck, curing sikcness and assuring a propitious passage from this world to the next. Korean Shamanism includes the worship of thousands of spirits and demons that are believed to dwell in every day object in the natural world, including rocks, trees, mountains and streams as well as celestial bodies. ONe of the important aspcest of Korean Shamanism is its deep belief in the soul of the dead. The saman is expected to resolve conflicts and tensions that are blieved to exist between the living and the dead.
This system of belief still persists in Korea today. A shaman is almost invariably a woman today, unlike in the olden times when the intermediary could be either male or femail. Shamanism for the traditional Korean is a religion of frea dn superstition but for the modern generation, it is a colorful and artistic ingredient of culture. A shaman ceremony, rich with exorcist elements, combines theatrical feats with music and dance. Shamanism has remained the underlying religion of the Koreans as well as a vital aspect of their subculture.

Prehistoric Korea

Early man first inhabited the Korean Peninsula roughly half a million years ago. In the past decade archaeological excavations have shed much new light on the prehistoric society of Korea. At Seokjang-ri near Gongju, Chungcheongnam-do province, artifacts of lower Paleolithic industry consisting of chopper-scraper culture was unearthed in the lower most part of the site.
Gojoseon

The people of Gojoseon or the oldest kingdom of Korea are recorded as Dongi, "eastern bowmen" or "eastern barbarians." They propagated in Manchuria, the eastern littoral of China, areas north of the Yangtze River, and the Korean Peninsula. The eastern bowmen had a myth in which the legendary founder Dangun was born of a father of heavenly descent and a woman from a bear-totem tribe. He is said to have started to rule in 2333 B.C., and his descendants reigned in Gojoseon, the "Land of Morning Calm," for more than a millennium.

Dutch Mayor Celebrates Hamel-Korea History by Choi Wu (wschoi@chosun.com)
Hendrick Hamel was the Dutchman who set foot in Korea in the 17th century and was the first Westerner to write about Korea in a book titled "Hamel¡¯s Journal." Now, 300 years later, Hamel has been ¡°reborn¡± both in his hometown of Gorkum in Holland and in Korea. The mayor of Gorkum, Pete Eisel, is in charge of "resurrecting" Hamel. Eisel is very busy - just this year, he has carried out 12 Korea-related official events. Last month he invited a Korean arts group to perform in the central plaza in front of 6,000 citizens. Also, he opened a "Hamel corner" exhibition in the city museum of Hallem, where Hamel¡¯s relatives live. He also designated Oct. 10 as "Korea Day" and invited trade envoys, Korean painters, and the county governor of Gangjin to have a symposium with members of the Netherlands Korea Trade Club. Eisel's most recent visit to Korea was to go to Gangjin-gun and Jeju Island to pursue the Hamel Project. Along with Gangjin-gun, Gorkum is participating in the restoration of a fortress and a stockade where Hamel was imprisoned, as well as the boat Hamel used to leave Korea. Eisel believes that the interest of Korea in Gorkum is not only due to Hamel but more to the World Cup. Thanks to Guus Hiddink, former coach of the Korean national soccer team, Gorkum has remembered its special link with Korea.

Advanced communication technologies now make it possible for people around the world to simultaneously experience significant historic events as they happen from virtually anywhere People cannot understand this rush of global information unless they know something about where it is happening, the people to whom it is happening, and the culture within which it is happening. They cannot understand the context of world events if their only basis for making judgements is a limited knowledge of their small corner of the world. The growing influence of Asian culture and the accelerating economic power of the Asian Pacific Rim make it vital to understand the rich history of that part of the world, to learn where nations of the Far East have been and where they may be heading. The Korean History Project is an educational organization dedicated to the research, production and online publication of Korean and East Asian history, to promoting history education and cultural understanding, and to making this valuable history resource easily accessible to a worldwide audience.
