Can you believe it? I have finally taken some time to update my website. Nothing major, but just a small update to let you all know I'm still in Korea as of February 2003. I have lots of plans in the works, so please stay tuned for a big update!.
Welcome to my webpage with all the information about my new and exciting adventures living in Korea. I have now been in Korea almost 3 years - unbelievable as I originally only planned to be here one year. Alas, here I am 3 years later.
I apologize for the lack of updates lately, but I have been very busy. It seems I always apologize for lack of updates, but perhaps it's because I am accustomed to life in Korea and nothing surprises me anymore. I better take that back because there is always something that arises when I least expect it.
For any doubters, I was SUCCESSFUL in my squat pot challenge. In fact, I have now lasted almost 3 years without using the dreaded pot and I am STILL determined to last the ENTIRE time in Korea without using one.
For those of you who don't know, I have a boyfriend I've been seeing for the past year. He's a great guy and we have a wonderful relationship. (Roger, if you're reading this, you were right.)

Korea (Culture Shock!) > Customer Review #1: Okay book, a little dated

I read this book before moving to Korea. The book prepared me for SOME of the differences between Koreans and Westerners, but some of the information was extremely outdated. The book is good for people to get a general idea of the culture in Korea, but Culture Shock!: Korea, needs to be updated. Most of the information on the relationships between men and women in Korea is just plain wrong.
Korea (Culture Shock!) > Customer Review #2: 1980s adult culture, but still useful

Japanese pop culture invades South Korea
Young South Koreans are packing games rooms to shake and shimmy to Japanese video games January 11, 2000 Web posted at: 12:16 p.m. HKT (0416 GMT) SEOUL, South Korea Just three months after South Korea lifted its ban on Japanese music and movies, Japanese pop culture which has swept across much of East Asia has taken South Korea by storm. Younger South Koreans are packing into music and video shops to check out the latest hits from Japan. Bands like Speed and singing sensation Utada Hikaru are hugely popular. Their albums often outsell those by their South Korean counterparts.

    Architecture
Four factors have shaped traditional Korean architecture: religion, available materials, the natural landscape, and an aesthetic preference for simplicity. Gently sloping roof lines and sturdy undecorated pillars characterize the simplicity, harmony, and practical utility of Korean architecture. Korea has many original wooden and stone structures, some dating back over a thousand years. There are also many skillful reproductions. Traditional architectural designs are incorporated in many modern buildings throughout the country.
    Calligraphy
Calligraphy, the art of brush writing, is a traditional art form in Korea which has exerted a strong influence on social and cultural life. Today it is respected as a revered art form. Calligraphy flourished during the Choson Dynasty. The intellectuals and scholars felt that writing was a gift from the gods; the divine letters and characters were objects of the highest veneration. Many notable calligraphers created their own styles during the Choson Dynasty. Some of these calligraphers were Prince Anpyong Yang Sa-on,Han Sok-bong, and Kim Chong-hui.

Though influenced by other Asian cultures, its roots lie deep in the creative Korean psyche. The culture has tended to spread rather than be encroached upon. Japan in particular has adopted many Korean ideas and customs.
The delicate styling and fine craftsmanship of celadon pottery well illustrates the refinement of the culture, even from as far back as the Three Kingdoms Period. Korea has also spawned some great inventions. Its early printing systems were highly refined and Korea's moveable metal type predated that of Gutenberg.
The famous "Turtle Ship" was the world's first ever ironclad battleship, and the Korean alphabet, devised by King Sejong and a group of scholars in the 15th century, was so effective that it remains largely unchanged today and is lauded by linguists for its simple clarity and for the ease with which it can be learned. Reasons behind Korea's rapid economic development can be found in this innate creativity.

About this site...
I've created this site to help spread a little knowledge about Korean culture. Explore the people, language, and arts of Korea! If you have questions, you can email me
Some of the things included on this site are:
  • A guide for people who want to learn how to read hangul, the Korean language. It's not a dictionary, and you can't hear things being pronounced, so no, of course this isn't the way to go about getting fluent in Korean. But at least you'll be able to read, and any words you don't know can easily be looked up in any Korean dictionary.
A look at historical Korea, including traditional Korean clothing and music free to download. A look at modern Korea: pop culture (movies, music), stamps, phone cards, money, and more!
  • Plenty of pictures of modern Korea: temples, palaces, and the beautiful countryside.
