[CONFUCIAN SCHOLAR] Living History
Dosan Seowon: Most prestigious school of Joseon Dynasty era
W ho is that handsome chap with the wispy facial hair on the front of the 1,000 won banknote? Look at the small print in Korean near the bottom right corner and you will find the answer. He is Toegye Yi Hwang (1501-1570), one of the foremost Confucian scholars of the Joseon era and the founder of one of the earliest and most famous private academies in Korea, Dosan Seodang (later named Dosan Seowon), situated near Andong in North Gyeongsang Province. In fact, if you turn over the same banknote, you will find a picture of Dosan Seowon on the reverse, which has now been restored to all its original glory, thanks to subsidies from the government. Toegye is an interesting figure in Korean educational history as both a school founder and a great Confucian thinker and writer. Renowned for his self-discipline and search for the virtuous life, he is the originator of such famous sayings as "When you are alone, behave decently," and "In practicing virtue one should perform it with perseverance, suppressing one's desires." Toegye gave up a career in government for the sake of self-cultivation and to pass on his ideas to certain selected individuals in his school. He began to build his academy, Dosan Seodang, in 1557, but financial problems delayed construction for four years.

News Bulletin Current Affairs Euro 2004 ... Reader Response Goethe Lands in North Korea The Goethe Institute is coming. After years of delicate negotiation Germany's Goethe Institute is becoming the first western cultural institute to open a reading room in the North Korean capital Pyongyang, a major cultural coup.
Located in a cultural center in the middle of the city, the Goethe Institute's reading room is about 150 square meters (1,615 square feet) in size and contains 8,000 books, magazines, CDs and videos. On June 3, the unprecedented project will be opened in Stalinism's last stronghold by a German delegation that includes the Goethe Institute's president, Jutta Limbach. "The opening of the center is a big success for our cultural policies," Limbach (photo) said in a statement. "Culture and education can achieve many things which politics alone cannot. It is our interest to use the existing possibilities for a free flow of information anywhere in the world. It is a big step forward that we have now found partners in North Korea."

Don't Leave Home Without It (or an updated version)!

This book answers many common questions about Korean culture. With humor, insight, and understanding, it explains why Koreans do the things they do, especially those things that boggle foreigners staying in Korea (the scoop on personal space, ettiquette with strangers, formal language, work relationships, etc.). It is, understandibly, OUTDATED. (I believe there is an updated version available, which I haven't read yet.) Read it anyway, if you are going to Korea. You will be prepared for the cultural conflicts you run into; You just might not run into as many differences as the book lead you to expect. Highly recommended!

A truly wonderful guidebook
Fabulously helpful.

I used this book to learn how to read Hangulwhich opened MANY doorsto plan many of my excursions, and to get places when nothing else worked. I was pleasantly surprised to find that even some details as precise as bus routes got me where I wanted to go, and the detailed information was much more informative and trustworthy than the tour guides I infrequently used. I wouldn't advise anyone to depend on any guidebook for things as ephermal as restaurant and bus line information, but in a pinch, this one worked just fine.
This book is Great.
The Moon Travel South Korean Handbook is one of the finest travelbooks and despite its age remains the best guide to seeing anything of interest to see on the peninsula. I am Korean and I use this guide when I tour temples or others attractions here.
Posters on this forum complain there are not enough refence to hotels and restaurants but dont realize that in Korea restaurants and many hotels come and go so fast that this information would be useless before the book hit the presses.

Korea (Culture Shock!) > Customer Review #1: Okay book, a little dated

I read this book before moving to Korea. The book prepared me for SOME of the differences between Koreans and Westerners, but some of the information was extremely outdated. The book is good for people to get a general idea of the culture in Korea, but Culture Shock!: Korea, needs to be updated. Most of the information on the relationships between men and women in Korea is just plain wrong.
Korea (Culture Shock!) > Customer Review #2: 1980s adult culture, but still useful

South Korea South Korea is a country swathed in green, prodding its stony fingers skyward, and the Koreans are a people obsessed with nature, and with mountains in particular. Wherever you travel, you'll see them out in the open air, clad in the latest adventure fashions, pushing ever onward and upward. It's a miracle that South Korea still exists. With China looming to its west and Japan nudging it from the east, it's no wonder the country has played unwilling host to centuries of war games. But no matter how many times its neighbours try to swallow it, South Korea manages to survive intact. South Koreans attribute their indefatigable culture to the binding agents of Confucianism, language and pride. The stunning landscape has also played a big part in creating a cohesive Korean identity. Full country name: Republic of Korea Area: 99,373 sq km Population: 48 million Capital City: Seoul (pop 10.3 million) People: Koreans, expats (mostly American) Language: Korean, English Religion: Christianity, Buddhism, Confucianism, Shamanism
