Korea Culture and Book Exhibition
Held in Dusseldorf/Germany (Feb. 9-21) A woeful state of national division on the Korean Peninsula grieved two youths of a former separated country in Europe and drove them to launch a non-political campaign for more understanding of north Korea. They were Mr. Andreas Niederdeppe and Mr. Armulf Piontek who worked together to arrange a Korean Cultural and Book Exhibition at the Dusseldorf Public Library, North Rhine/Westphalia, Germany from Feb. 9 to 21. "In the past, there have been no Korean exhibitions held without politics. They have been anti- or pro-Pyongyang presentations. We just wanted to provide non-political materials on north Korea to local people to help them understand another aspect of the country," said Mr. Niederdeppe. Both Mr. Niederdeppe and Mr. Piontek are fervent listeners to Radio Pyongyang. Mr. Niederdeppe is also a fan of south Korean KBS programs. "It's sad for us to see the two sides still confronting each other in the cold war structure." On show were north Korean music CDs, videos, insam, pottery, pictorials of Korean scenery, paintings, etc. Most of these items had been sent from Pyongyang in accordance with an agreement with the Korean Publications Exchange Association when the two Germans visited the country last May.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Since the establishment of the Han Dynasty colonies in the northern Korean Peninsula 2,000 years ago, Koreans have been under the cultural influence of China . During the period of Japanese domination (1910-45), the colonial regime attempted to force Koreans to adopt the Japanese language and culture . Neither the long and pervasive Chinese influence nor the more coercive and short-lived Japanese attempts to make Koreans loyal subjects of the Japanese emperor, however, succeeded in eradicating their ethnic, cultural, and linguistic distinctiveness. The desire of the North Korean regime to preserve its version of Korean culture, including many traditional aspects such as food, dress, art, architecture, and folkways, is motivated in part by the historical experience of cultural domination by both the Chinese and the Japanese. Juche 's ideology asserts Korea 's cultural distinctiveness and creativity as well as the productive powers of the working masses. The ways in which Juche rhetoric is used shows a razor-thin distinction between revolutionary themes of self-sufficient socialist construction and a virulent ethnocentrism. In the eyes of North Korea's leaders, the "occupation" of the southern half of the peninsula by "foreign imperialists" lends special urgency to the issue of culturalethnic identity. Not only must the people of

The culture of South Korea is shared with that of North Korea , but there are regional differences. The political differences between the north and the south of the peninsula also mean that there is a different focus on specific aspects of Korean culture.

Traditional Music
The traditional music in Korea is based on the voice . It is thought that the voice is a distinctively Korean voice, reflecting the temperament and history of Korean people. There are two kinds of traditional music: Jeongak and Minsogak Also see: Music of Korea edit
Jeongak
Jeongak is court music and has a strong intellectual emphasis. This kind of traditional music is closely related to the upper-class, the literate. Jeongak is played at a very slow pace. Some single beats can take three seconds. The beat matches the speed of breathing rather than the heartbeat as in most Western music. As a result of this slow speed, the music feels static and mediative. Most people do not take pleasure in listening to this kind of music. The tone of Jeongak is soft and tranquil because the traditional instrument are made of non-metallic materials. String instruments have strings made of silk rather than wire. Almost all wind instruments are made of bamboo.

Three Mrs. Kims dressed in traditional hanboks Couple on their way to Ch'usok ceremony Confucian Ideas: Mrs. Kim teaches her grand-daughter the art of cooking Women and Village Life: The idea of cooperation based on a system of authority worked in the old villages. Villagers often banded together to help one another in times of need and for important events. If a member might need help in a harvest or perhaps house repairs all the rest would gather to help. When a village needed a new well or a bridge, for example, everyone pitched in to build them. For important occasions such as funerals, weddings, or major birthday party (usually when a man reached the age of 60), villagers often pooled their moneys to make a grand party. That sense of solidarity with one's neighbors and even one's nation still flows through Korean life today.
