Country Info South Korea Introduction South Korea General Data South Korea Maps South Korea Culture ... South Korea Time and Date South Korea Culture Back to Top South Korea's homogeneous population shares a common ethnic, cultural, and linguistic heritage. National self-image is, on one level, unambiguously defined by the convergence of territorial, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural identities. Yet intense feelings of nationalism, so evident in athletic events like the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Olympic Games held in Seoul, revealed anxiety as well as pride concerning South Korea's place in the world. More than Western peoples and even more than the Japanese, South Korean individuals are inclined to view themselves as a tightly knit national community with a common destiny. In a rapidly changing world, however, it is often difficult for them to define exactly what being a South Korean is. To outsiders, the intense concern with identity is perhaps difficult to understand; it reflects a history of subordinate relations to powerful foreign states and the tragedy of national division after World War II. Many modernized, urban-dwelling South Koreans embark on a search for the "essence" of their culture, which commonly expresses itself as hostility to foreign influences. For example, the poet Kim Chi-ha, whose opposition to the Park regime in the 1970s was a model for a younger generation of dissidents, attacked the government as much for its neglect of traditional values as for its antidemocratic tendencies.

Culture
Korean society is based on the tenets of Confucianism, a system of ethics developed in China around 500 BC. Confucianism is big on devotion and respect - for parents, family, friends and those in positions of authority. Confucius also emphasised justice, peace, education, reform and humanitarianism. Many Koreans attribute their country's remarkable success in recent decades to this attitude. In modern Korean society, Confucianism is most noticeable in relations between people. The Five Relationships prescribe behaviour between ruler and subject, father and son, husband and wife, old and young, and between friends. If you fall outside any of these relationships, you do not, effectively, exist. Many travellers to Korea find the locals rude: they're probably not; chances are they just haven't noticed you. Once you're introduced to someone, you'll fall within the rules for friends and things will start looking up. The South Koreans have turned their hand to just about any art form you can name. Traditional music is similar to that of Japan and China, with an emphasis on strings. The two main forms are the stately chongak and the folksier minsogak . Among the folk dances are drum dances ( mugo - a hectic, lively court dance where the participants wear drums around their necks), mask dances (

Kim Il Sung promoted traditional Korean arts and culture vigorously, though his motives for doing so are debatable. He was a fierce nationalist who was convinced of the superiority of Korean culture: North Koreans were told that they were ethnically superior, that their country was the best in the world and Kim Il Sung was the greatest man who ever lived. What that all means is that if you have an interest in traditional Korean arts, North Korea is the place to see them. You can view exhibitions of traditional or modern pottery, sculpture, painting and architecture on request, and your guide will take you to films or the theatre for a reasonable charge. Traditional music is similar to that of Japan and China, with an emphasis on strings. The two main forms are the stately chongak and the folksier minsogak . Imformation of Traditional Korean Music Traditional Korean Music K orea is rich in musical culture, and its music is distinctive despite tremendous influences from China. The same is true for Japanese music despite Korean influence. Evidence of these influences can presently be found in the existence of Koreanized-Chinese music called tang-ak in Korea and of Japanized-Korean music called komagaku in Japan. The Korean term tang-ak literally means music from T'ang Dynasty China. Similarly the Japanese term komagaku signifies music from the Koryo Dynasty in Korea. K M S og-ak, music for the commoner includes shaman music, Buddhist music, folk songs, farmers' music called nong-ak, a form of dramatic song called p'ansori, and an instrumental solo music called sanjo. In shaman music, the role of an inspired female shaman priest called a mudang is very important. The mudang plays the part of a medium between the visible world and the supernatural. Singing, dancing, and instrument playing are always involved. One of the most important types of Buddhist music is called pomp'ae, a song of praise to Buddha, and today preserved by only a few priests. To promote this music, the government has designated pomp'ae as an intangible cultural asset and is taking steps to encourage new devotees of the art.

    Traditions
The pageantry, merrymaking, and colorful rites of holiday festivals are an important feature of Korean life. However, with the powerful tide of westernization and modernization since the turn of the century, most traditional holidays are just remembered rather than observed. But there still are some important festive days on the Korean calendar that are celebrated joyfully and elaborately.
The first day of the lunar month, which is called Sol by Koreans and usually falls between late January and early February, has traditionally been the biggest holiday. All of the family members gather together, dress in their best clothes, and observe ancestral rites. After the ceremony, they enjoy a feast and the younger member of the family make New Year's obeisance to their elders. This is called j'ul. This is when the younger members bow to the older members and receive money. Although the New Year generally continues to be celebrated by the lunar calendar in the countryside, most urbanites observe it on January 1. The three days of January are designated an official holiday by the government.
Other major holidays include Taeborum, the first full moon of the year, when farmers and fisherman pray for rich crops and enjoy special games; Tano, the firth day of the fifth lunar month, when farmers take a day off from the field for joint entertainment Ch'usok, the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, a harvest festival and thanksgiving day; and Buddha's birthday, the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, when believers observer special services at temples and stage colorful lantern 0processions.

The Korean Culture and Arts Promotion Fund (KCAP Fund), raised and managed by the KCAF, is a vital financial source for the development of Korea? culture and arts. Since the size of the fund can be seen as a yardstick to measure the nation? capacity and interest in promoting culture, the KCAF autonomously forms the fund through various funds-raising activities and donations from both public and private sectors. The collection system for the KCAP Fund, collected via surcharges from admission fees to cinemas, theaters, historical sites, art galleries, royal palaces and museums, was first introduced in July 1973 according to Clause 7 of the Culture and Arts Promotion Act, and is planned to continue until the end of 2003. The fund is invested in the fields of culture and arts to construct artistic and cultural infrastructures designed to create a better environment for anyone interested in arts, including artists and art lovers. Thus, the fund is considered essential for the development of Korea culture and arts in general. There have been other sources as well. The KCAF has received donations from individuals and business organizations as well as allocations from the government budget, which began in 1989, and from the Broadcasting Development Fund that is raised from profits from broadcasting advertisement. In 2001, the KCAF introduced a system in which special sub-funds are established under donors name.
