A show on North Korean cuisine? You can't be serious
Yes, I know North Korea has its own distinct cuisine (which is quite good). Then again, so does Ethiopia (which is also quite good), but I don't seem to recall Bob Geldof filming a cooking show in Addis Ababa in 1985. I have to wonder if MBC realizes the perverse irony of shooting a holiday special on the local cuisine of a nation racked by famine . Anyway, according to the Korea Times:
Scheduled to air at 11:10 p.m. on Jan 31, "Journey Into the World of North Korean Dishes" will be jointly produced by MBC and North Korea's Chosun Choongang TV. The program will take viewers to Pyongyang, Hamhung, Wonsan, and Kaesong, North Korean cities famous for their cuisine and lots of starving people Yang is accompanied by reporters from both the South and North as she narrates about the lives and food of North Korea. The program will introduce Pyongyang onban, Hamhung raengmyon, Wonsan tolkaejjim, Kaesong ginseng takgom and North Korean tree bark stew many other dishes.

Hankbok s.
In general, men wore a jacket and pants, women a jacket and skirt, while on formal occasions, both might wear a topcoat or gown over this outfit. The upper and lower garments were of different colors. An especially distinctive feature was the use of a wide band, darker than the main color, along the collar, front hem, and bottom hem of the upper garment. The same darker color might also be used for a belt that emphasized the shape of the upper garment and gave the wearer a geometrical look by dividing the body spatially. There were many variations on this use of decorative lines, and sometimes a second, thinner line was added. From this we can infer that line decoration was used as an aesthetic element designed to make the upper garment stand out as a focus of attention. It may also have served a practical purpose in making the edges of the garment stronger and more resistant to soiling. Officials, similarly, were differentiated by the designs embroidered on the front and back of their gowns: civil officials sported a crane, military officials a tiger, and the larger the number of cranes or tigers, the higher the rank of the wearer. Status was also symbolized by color. Yellow stood for the emperor, red for the king, and purple for the crown prince, while violet, blue, and green were used to distinguish the rank of officials. Though cut from flat cloth, when worn the hanbok takes on a voluminous three-dimensional quality. With its simple form and generous fit, it is flexible enough to accommodate any body shape and comfortable to wear while sitting on the floor, as is usual in a Korean house. Its ample folds impart an air of elegance and refinement to the wearer. For all its simplicity, the way it is worn determines its shape and produces creases that can also become an aesthetic element.

Korea Life Blog - Rosanna Club
Here's a shot of one of those "red light rooms." I stealthily took out my camera and snapped it and trotted off before any thugs came out to smash me. It's not such an exciting picture as you can't actually see the girls, but you get the idea. Those doors are transparent so when you walk by you can see them all hanging out in there. There were at least ten behind each door. Usually you see these red light "clubs" clustered in certain areas, not just in a random location. This one is between a bar and a restaurant, something I found fairly amusing. Have some dinner, grab a few beers at the pub, then head on over to the Rosanna club. I just reread that sentence - sounds like some kind of lame country music lyric. Where's my banjo, Goober?

Art class, which I have yet to figure out, since they have an Art teacher, and Cooking class. It's not frequent, so it's hardly a problem, but it's always interesting going into classes with absolutely no idea what you are supposed to be doing. In Art class we review colors, or quiz the children on the English words involved in making the project. The Art teacher thinks it's as humorous as we do, as we sit in front of the class, stalling for time, while trying to come up with some sort of lesson revolving around pipe cleaners and glue. Improv, baby, and how! This week was the first time we had cooking class, so I didn't know what to expect. The first class I walked into, the teacher was frantically applying contact paper to a box. It was explained to me that we had to use double sided tape and stick individually wrapped crackers and cookies to this box to make a mock "gingerbread house" of sorts. How this is "cooking" I don't know but as long as it keeps hyperactive children away from knives, I'm for it. My second cooking class was more exciting, but just as strange. Forgetting that we had scheduled the field trip for today that got cancelled, the teachers were mostly unprepared for the cooking that was now in the schedule. As a work around some member of the staff got sent to purchase lots of crackers, cherry tomatoes, and some cheese. In class we assembled mock sandwiches with the crackers, cheese and some ketchup too. Not exactly a feast, and the kids were baffled as to how to get the ketchup on the cracker after I splattered it on their plates. Geez, how do these kids eat french fries? Oh wait, I remember, with a fork. Ugh.

CodeCatalyst.com ::Features:: Engrish Archives Blogger Archives Search Queries Add Avantgo Channel While I was too medicated to manage anything other than supervising students attempting to do mazes in class today, Kurt was planning a Dok-Po-Ki party for one of his classes. We've experimented with cooking classes in the past, and they seemed go over rather well with the students. Of course, the classes in the class were nothing like this.... Kurt inherited some of the lowest level teenage students in a class of about 10 or more. Most of the students have attitude problems, and don't want to study English. With these kinds of classes the easist thing to do is just pound away at the book, get it done, and don't waste the effort on the students that don't care if they learn or not. I don't know why he decided to have a party, but he went ahead despite their apathy. He told them what to bring, and they actually delivered on their grocery list, which surprised me. Of course, the girls were willing to try to cook and help, but the problem is rarely the girls in most classes. The problem in this class in particular is the horrible boys.

Adams Advertiser Food Editor Bibim bap can be a simple meal or a complex preparation of up to 30 ingredients. Chae Won Choe says he's convinced that the secret to making good kim chee is held only by Korean aunties and grandmothers. But anybody can make bibim bap. Rice, a scattering of fresh or prepared vegetables, a few strips of grilled meat or even fish or chicken, an egg (raw or fried) and a little Korean hot sauce. What could be more straightforward? "To me, this is home," said Choe, as he prepared a version of bibim bap making use of intriguing prepared vegetable mixtures found in local Korean grocery stores. Bibim bap literally means "mixed-up rice" and its history, conventions and techniques make a tidy introduction to the cuisine of Korea — among the least well-understood of Asian immigrant cuisines here.
