K orea Land People Culture and the Arts of Korea Korean art possesses several distinguishing characteristics that create a unique style of its own. Korean art respects nature, and the extensive use of quiet and subdued colors is manifested in Korean paintings and ceramics. Humor is another characteristic of Korean art. Bold exaggeration, the acceptance of non-symmetrical cubic objects, and unique spatial beauty conveyed by imperfect roundness are examples of humor in Korean art. Quiet harmony may be cited as another characteristic of Korean art. This means that there is no excess, the right materials being selected in scale with the surroundings. With all of these characteristics, the Korean arts have inherited a unique aesthetic sense which depicts beauty with honesty and simplicity that is free of artifice. History of Korea

History History is one of the most important basic sciences that deals with the past of mankind. We can diagnose the present and predict the future based on a clear understanding of the past. The department offers four major areas: Korean History, Asian History, Western History and Archaeology. Each program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to study subject matters and problematic issues in a comparative context of time and space. Historians borrow methods and ideas from a wide range of fields in the humanities and social sciences and integrate them to describe or explain a particular time period or topic in history.
The courses aim to help students develop balanced knowledge for their future career and academic goals.
The department intensively conducts excavation works at many archaeological sites in the nation in cooperation with the University museum.
Graduates of the department serve society as professors, teachers in secondary schools while others are making positive contributions to society as research assistants in museums, journalists and business executives.

The tragedy of four civilizations
Any civilization will be ruined if it does not think of its own immortality
We are used to treating myths and legends as things that do not actually exist. However, if we take a closer look at the cultural inheritance of a people, we notice remarkable things. For example, some cultures that live absolutely separately from each other have legends that describe one and the same thing or event. Such legends surely have certain differences, but they are basically the same. Scientist Vladimir Shemchuk has studied the curious peculiarities of folklore and compared them to certain facts from the history of our planet. Shemchuk got the following picture of life on planet Earth over thousands of years.
The Bible contains a legend that there used to be a Golden Age on the planet. Then, it was replaced by the Silver Age, then there was the Bronze Age, and it was all over with the Iron Age. The legends of American Indians and of the African and Australian tribes say that planet Earth was first inhabited by demigods: the Assures (Titans). Then, there were the Atlants. The Atlants were smaller than the Titans; they soon died, and they were replaced by the civilization of giants.
We are used to judging ancient civilizations as badly developed and primitive. Yet, some findings in mines prove that the people of ancient civilizations could mine coal. They even had electricity and manufactured plastic items. All ancient written sources of information mention giants. Most likely, those abundant written legends about giants give certain reasons to believe that giants actually lived on our planet thousands of years ago. This theory explains why ancient constructions and buildings were so huge. It was not simply because of the wish to show their power. They were needed for giant people.

The Korean Peninsula extends southward from the northeastern section of the vast Asian continent, spanning 1,000 kilometers north to south. It shares most of its northern border with China and touches Russia. At the end of World War II in 1945, the Peninsula has been divided into two parts, and three years later, the Republic of Korea was established in the south and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north. The Korean Peninsula is 222,196 square kilometers, almost the same site as the U.K. or Romania. The administrative area of the Republic of Korea is 99,434 square kilometers, slightly larger than Hungary or Portugal and a little smaller than Iceland. Korea has a varied terrain, though about 70 percent of the territory is mountainous. The spectacular Taebaek mountains run the full length of the east coast, where the lashing tides of the East Sea, have carved out sheer cliffs and rocky islets. The western and southern slopes are very gentle, forming plains and many offshore islands honeycombed with inlets. The irregular shoreline is dotted with over 3,000 islands.

The Gaya period saw the cultivation of rice and production of iron, thereby playing a leading part in helping to form an ancient civilization in Korea. King Suro's tomb stands as a state symbol of the Gaya culture. According to legend, golden eggs fell from the sky. King Suro hatched from those eggs.
View this video of the very old tomb of King Suro in Gimhae, South Korea. Included in the video is a modern Korean burial ground. The tomb has been designated Historic Site #73. In 1580, the 13th year of the reign of King Seonjo (r.1567-1608) of the Joseon Kingdom (1392-1910), governor Ho Yop of the Yeongnam region (North and South Gyeongsang Provinces) had the tomb repaired. There are several stone monuments to the achievements of King Suro and buildings on the grounds, including Sungseon-jeon, which contains the ancestral tablets. King Gojong (r. 1863-1907) named the structure Sungseon-jeon in 1878. The gravestone in front of the tomb was erected in 1647, the 25th year of the reign of King Injo (r. 1623-1649).

Ronald Clayton: Reflections on recent travels in Korea Two years ago, I read a book by the art historian Simon Schama titled "Landscape and Memory" . This book is a meditation on the conflict between man and nature throughout western history. Schama leads his readers on a poignant but futile pilgrimage all over the western world looking for just one view of nature as it might have been without man's intervention. In the end the nature he reveals most clearly is human nature. Because the conflicts which define history are of course, all too human, nature is at most a passive witness to, and often a victim of human conflict. Schama's book seemed to validate my paintings but as a painter, I have a certain advantage... At first I integrated idealized landscapes from my mind's eye and memory into paintings that are otherwise abstract suggestions of industrial interiors. I wanted to set up a tension between the two by playing on the tension between abstract and illusionist pictorial space. Then in 1997 I visited Mexico on vacation. I went to the Yucatan and rediscovered for myself the ruins of Mayan civilization. I had previously spent time in American ruins of the

SECTION 2. THE CREATOR OF ANCIENT CIVILIZATION
IN THE TAEDONG RIVER BASIN WAS THE KOREAN NATION
Ancient civilization in the Taedong River basin was created by the Korean nation with the establishment of Kojoson. None of the four ancient civilizations in the world was created by a nation. When the four civilizations were created, nations had not yet been formed in those regions; the creators and the main agents of those civilization were tribes or inhabitants in the stage of quasi-nation, who had just emerged from the primitive society. The Taedonggang culture assumes conspicuous national character because it was created by the nation, unlike the four ancient civilizations of the world. It is the honour and pride of the Korean nation that the Taedonggang culture, one of the earliest ancient civilizations in the world, was created by the Korean nation. The Korean nation is a homogeneous nation of one and the same blood. Its members have had the same language and culture on the same territory throughout their 5,000-year history. President Kim Il Sung said as follows: “Through the excavation of Tangun’s Tomb, our people have discovered the father of the nation and can take legitimate pride in the fact that ours is an advanced, civilized country in the Orient with a time-honoured history of five thousand years and that our nation is a homogeneous nation that descended from Tangun.”

Not only this, but they also participated in human sacrifices as well, making them daring and fierce at the same time.
