    The Art of War
When the Spanish began to colonize the Philippine islands the culture and technology was by no means that far behind most other areas of the world. Indeed, in many areas the Filipinos were quite advanced. The metal smith, Panday Piray of Pampanga, was so skilled at weapons making and other types of metal working that the Spanish entrusted him with opening the first Spanish artillery foundry in the country. The Spanish found that the Filipinos made their own small arquebuses, or portable cannons, usually made of bronze. Larger cannons made of iron and resembling culverins provided heavier firepower. The iron cannon at Raha Soliman's house was about 17 feet long and was made from clay and wax moulds. The most fearsome weapon though was the famed lantaka , or swivel gun. Unlike the Spanish cannons these guns were placed on flexible swivels that allowed the gunner to quickly track a moving target. The lantakas of the Moros gave the Spanish so much trouble that they always included native ships, like the karakoa, equipped with lantakas to counter the Moro weapons. The most impressive lantakas had two revolving barrels. These were eventually exported to South America, and may have become the precursor of the Gatling gun.

News in Bet-Nahren, Assyria The Rise and Fall of a Great and Ancient Civilization by Reem Haddad, Daily Star : Lebanese news, April 6, 2001 Posted: Monday, June 04, 2001 at 03:22 PM CT
The Assyrians created many ideas and technologies used today, including the first postal system, a sexagesimal system of keeping time, paved roads, magnifying glasses, libraries, plumbing and flush toilets, guitars, aqueducts, laxatives and the use of lock and key. They also created the first boot a calf-high, laced leather boot with a sole reinforced by metal developed for soldiers, who had used open-toe sandals up until then. The Assyrian government also served as a model for future empires, especially the Persian and Roman. Known for its brutal and cruel warriors with well-organized and well-equipped armies, Assyrian rule extended over a vast area between 2,400 BC and 612 BC. Assyrians held power from Egypt to Cyprus in the west, through Anatolia, to the Caspian in the east. In 612 BC, however, the empire collapsed. In the first century, the Assyrians were among the first people to embrace Christianity. Until then, they worshiped their god, Ashur. In 33 AD, the Assyrian Church was founded.

    Evaluating Ancient Civilization
Planet earth is a place of ever-changing experience. Yet of all the diversity of living species only the humans have developed artificial civilization that dominates the environment and uses sophisticated means of communication with art, technology, and writing that are passed on to future generations. To discuss the ethics of early humans before the appearance of this evidence is very speculative and uncertain. Nonetheless to understand ourselves better it is useful to have some ideas as to our origins. Readers may disagree or agree about the spiritual aspects of our being and its source in God or a creator, but the long process of evolution is fairly well proven now by the scientific research of the last century or so. What does the nature of our bodies and how they evolved reveal about our values? The second law of thermodynamics indicates that the physical universe is meant to be used. As warm-blooded mammals our bodies must be constantly fed and protected from cold weather. To do this requires using resources of the environment. In our time excessive exploitation of the environment threatens our very survival, but in the ancient world with a small human population this was only rarely the case. The extension of childhood development and dependence on the mother for longer periods stimulated family values. The enjoyment of sexual relations at any time by creatures with brains large enough to make conscious choices brought greater emotional attachment, rivalry, jealousy, and social customs in mating. Much of human ethics is concerned with the morals of mating and the raising of children to understand the customary behaviors of the social group.

The Korean Peninsula extends for about 1,000 kilometers southward from the northeast part of the Asian continent and consists of the Korean Peninsula and over 3,400 islands. The peninsula and all of its associated islands lie between 33¡ÆN and 43¡ÆN parallels and 124¡ÆE and 132¡ÆE meridians. The northernmost point is Yupojin in Onsong-gun, North Hamgyong Province, and the southernmost point is Marado Island, Cheju Province. The westernmost point is Maando Island in Yongchon-gun, North Pyongan Province, and the easternmost is Tokdo Islets in Ullunggun, North Kyongsang Province. The standard meridian of the peninsula is 135¡ÆE, so Seoul local time is nine hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.
The Amnok (Yalu) River and the Tuman (Tumen) River border both China and Russia to the north and Japan is just across the East Sea. Since 1945, as a byproduct of the Cold War, the peninsula has been divided at the 38th parallel into the Republic of Korea, or South Korea, and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, more commonly known as North Korea.
Lacking formidable land or sea barriers along its borders and occupying a central position among East Asian nations, the Korean Peninsula has served as a cultural bridge between the mainland and the Japanese archipelago. Korea contributed greatly to the development of Japan by transmitting both Indian Buddhist and Chinese Confucian culture, art, and religion.

The Paleolithic Age in Korean history indicates that human inhabitants were present on the Korean peninsula half a million years ago, although they are not thought to be the direct ancestors of Koreans. These ancient people were pushed out of Korea into Japan and Siberia by a migrating group at the start of the Neolithic age. Paleolithic people were a hunting and gathering people. Archeological evidence shows they hunted rhinoceros, cave bears, brown bears, hyena, and deer. Cave paintings of these animals indicate that written communication and art were capabilities of Paleolithic people. Between 6,000 and 4,000 BC, tribes of Tungusic people migrated into the Korean peninsula from Central Asia and the Altaic mountain region. These people were of the Neolithic Age and are thought to be the direct ancestors of Korean people. Neolithic people in Korea began as a hunting gathers but by 2,000 BC they were living in an agrarian society. They lived in pit dwellings, started to weave, began to sew with bone needles, and were capable of very detailed painting on their pottery. They believed in Animism (worship of animals) and thought all natural objects had spirits. Shamanism (spirit worship) was prevalent among these people as it was elsewhere in Asia during this time period. Shamans were believed to have supernatural healing power and the ability to contact spirits to protect family and community from evil spirits.

New Relics of "River Taedong Civilization" Found in Pyongyang Photo shows a site of a village (the period from the Neolithic era to ancient Korea) discovered in Richon-ri, Sungho district, Pyongyang. PYONGYANG, February 1 (KCNA) — More relics have been recently discovered in different parts of Pyongyang. Earthen walls dating back to ancient Korea were unearthed in Kwangdok-ri, Samsok district in the northern suburbs of Pyongyang. It is believed that there may be only earthen walls dating back to Koryo dynasty. But this time, stratum of walls dating back to ancient Korea has been discovered there. Pieces of the mouth and body of a top vessel and stone ax, relics of ancient Korea, were unearthed in the 1,053 metre-long lower stratum of the walls belonging to Koryo dynasty. Photo shows an earthenware vessel of the period from the Neolithic era to ancient Korea, unearthed in a newly discovered site of an ancient village. Also unearthed inside the walls were sites of two houses 50 cm below the surface of the earth. Stone ax, stone arrowhead, stone dagger as well as at least 50 pieces of top vessels were found in the site of an oval semi-dugout 6.8 metres long on its eastern-western side and 3.4 metres wide on its northern-southern side and in the site of a house which was so badly destroyed that only its eastern part remains.
