This module offers a first survey of the main Dutch organisations and institutes which focus entirely or partly on Africa.
Various institutions refer in their website to colleagues elsewhere in Europe. We mention this in our description.
For our visitors from Africa we included a couple of very informative sites as an introduction to The Netherlands. You find these in the section Government.
At a later stage organizations from Africans in Holland and Dutch cultural institutions will be presented in separate modules.

The capital and largest city is Moroni . It is comprised of three main islands, Njazidja (or Ngazidja; also Grande Comore or Grand Comoros) : on which Moroni is located : Nzwani (or Ndzouani; also Anjouan), and Mwali (also MohEli), and numerous coral reefs and islets. They are volcanic in origin, with interiors that vary from high peaks to low hills and coastlines that feature many sandy beaches. Njazidja is the site of a still-active volcano, Karthala, which, at 7,746 ft (2,361 m), is the islands' highest peak. The Comoros have a tropical climate with the year almost evenly divided between dry and rainy seasons; cyclones (hurricanes) are quite frequent. The islands once supported extensive rain forests, but most have been severely depleted. The indigenous people are a mix of African, Arab, and Asian (mostly Indian and Malay) descent. Islam is the state religion (with Sunni predominating), and there is a sizable Roman Catholic minority. Arabic, French, and Comorian (a blend of Swahili and Arabic) are all official languages.

Even where indigenous female political organizations existed, played important political roles, and had been highlighted by anthropologists who were struggling to understand traditional socio-political organization of African societies ( cf Henn 1978; Guyer 1984; Nkwi 1985; Ritzenthaler 1960; Wipper 1982; Kalb 1985), there is still the stubborn refusal among chauvinist academic circles that African women really matter or ever mattered. Attempts at re-evaluating their roles are interpreted as simple romanticization. This paper is not an excursion into the imbecility of verifying the marginal or worse still, absent role of women in politics. Every where today in Africa, the female educated elite are rising to ask for a fair power sharing formula with their counterparts to effectively participate in the development of our continent (O’Bar 1984; Onalenna 2001). But traditional female indigenous institutions continue to resurface, readjust and conquer space in the sphere of modern politics.

    Jakkalsbessie/Jackal Berry

    AUSTRALIA'S CRIMINAL RECORD
In 1993, after fierce bidding, the year 2000 Olympic Games were awarded to AUSTRALIA over China by the International Olympic Committee, allegedly because of a better human rights record. But is this so? You be the judge. Here is a list of crimes by the white racist regime: * Mass murder (genocide) of 500,000 Aboriginal (black) people and the continued theft of their lands. These murders continue with deaths in H.M.S prison service and police custody to the present day. AUSTRALIA is based on the rape and theft of the lands of Aboriginal peoples. Even the courts of the country are recognizing this, but the government is openly defying the court system, as well as international law and public opinion by refusing to abide by the Mabo, Wik, and other rulings granting native land title. * The rise of Pauline Hanson, the openly white racist politician, who is against Asian immigration and the human rights of Aborigines, and who is for a "white AUSTRALIA" restricted immigration policy, which discriminates against non-whites. She calls the Aborigines "savages" and "cannibals" who should be eliminated from "civilized society." The rise of her One Nation Party, a fascist, white supremacist electoral movement, is a serious development which will continue to impact on Australia's position in the world making it a pariah nation, based on her present influence on the government, and likelihood of being elected Prime Minister.

    Trip 2: Itinerary
    Egypt
We return to the Red Sea coast and our route takes us south along the coast road and then west back to the Nile. This avoids the chaotic road that runs through the Nile valley and lets us move quickly on to Luxor.
Luxor (Thebes) was the ancient capital of Egypt for 1500 years. We will visit the awe-inspiring Karnak temples and also hire donkeys or bicycles to ride to the Valley of the Kings and Tutankhamun's tomb. Near here is also the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut and the Tombs of the Nobles.
Between Luxor and Aswan are the Nubian villages, built to resettle people from areas flooded by the High Dam, and we may have time to visit the well-preserved Ptolemaic Temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo. There were many temples built along the Nile by the Ancient Egyptians and these two are still virtually complete.
Aswan is our next stop. Here we visit the Temple of Philae, quarries where there is an unfinished obelisk, and the high dam, built to control the flow of the Nile thus creating Lake Nasser, the largest artificial lake in the world. There is also an opportunity to trek into the desert by camel to a deserted 6th century monastery, sail by felucca to Elephantine and Kitchener Islands and visit the tomb of the Aga Khan who described Aswan as the most beautiful spot on earth.
A day spent traveling south on a desert highway brings us to two magnificent temples at Abu Simbel, which were moved uphill from rising flood waters of Lake Nasser by a UNESCO project in the sixties.

Well, here we are again - another Main Street and another Cyberbraai list. To the many friends who continue to send in contributions to Cyberbraai, we say thanks and we raise our glass of Amarula in appreciation. The Amarula glass has been raised frequently of late since we have just had a big celebration in the Main Street family - the marriage of Adrian Lurssen (who, incidentally, dreamed up the word "cyberbraai") to the lovely Merel Kennedy of McLean, Virginia. In order to give their American friends a taste of real food, we asked Patricia Solomon, a Capetonian working in Washington DC, to prepare one of her wonderful menus. Did she ever! Patricia provided lamb curry, pineapple chicken, samoosas, glazed veggies in the Cape style, yellow rice with all the good stuff in it and melktert that made all the American guests want to emigrate to South Africa on the next plane out of Dulles. Patricia does private catering in the Washington area and if anyone wants to make use of her services, send us an email message and we will pass it on to her. She is terrific. Bobotie was provided by another South African friend, Millicent Chaise - many of our readers will know her as Millicent Mseleku, one of the country's leading fashion models - and it was superb, a bobotie to be cherished and recalled on dull days when some cheering up is required. The dinner was enhanced by Cape wines and a dop or two of the aforesaid Amarula. For those who don't know of it yet, Amarula is - reading from the label here - a wild fruit cream and a "smooth experience". The marula tree is known locally as the "elephant tree" because the big critters are partial to its small, yellow fruit. Amarula is produced in South Africa and available in America and Canada.

    http://general.rau.ac.za/aambeeld/desember2002/max du preez.htm
Afrikane en Patagoniese eende Max du Preez Abstract The debate around onthe question whether white South Africans can rightly call themselves Africans, has largely been dismissed or ignored by white people. “I was born here”, or “my people have been here for generations” or “I have no other passport” are the typical simplistic reasons many whites give why they regard themselves as Africans. Yet in 2002 this debate around on identity is still central to the relationship between the black majority and the white minority and plays a critical role in the thinking of the present ruling class. For probably the majority of black South Africans, “ Africa ” and “African” have a deeper meaning: theyit defines the “us” and “them”. It defines the “indigenous people” as opposed to the “settlers” who, under old-style apartheid, still called themselves Europeans. “African” has become a platform of identity from which black people can assert themselves in the face of global anti-black racism. Black South Africans tend to still regard most whites as the unrehabilitated descendants of colonialist thieves. That is probably the most important reason why Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe is getting away with his harsh racist attacks on whites.

    CHIEF GCALEKA'S SKULDUGGERY.
The hocus-pocus way that claims aremade - especially if it relates to indigenous beliefs and customs- are well known to most South Africans. One recent example whichattracted world wide attention, was the claim made by Chief Gcaleka that the skull that he brought back from Scotland, belonged to that of Chief Hintsa's, one of his forefathers. Prof Philip Tobias of Wits University, world renown Anthropologist, did some extensive tests and announced that the skull which was brought back belonged to an European female and not to Chief Hintsa. Chief Gcaleka reacted strongly to this announcement and declared that the skull investigated by prof Tobias, was not the one he brought back from Scotland. He said his forefathers had informed him that the genuine skull was in the safe custody of four headmen. The question arising out of this, is how, where and with what authority dit chief Gcaleka obtain this skull - regardless of whom it "belonged" to. Secondly how did this gruesome relic get through the custom gates? This indeed is some hocus-pocus with a difference.

For the Educated People only ... Reflections on a Visit to two Multipurpose Community Telecentres in Uganda
    Mona DAHMS
Aalborg University, DENMARK Introduction This article is based on the information acquired during two short visits to two Multipurpose Community Telecentres (MCT) in Uganda, the Nakaseke MCT and the Nabweru MCT. The visits took place during July 1999, in connection with my research which deals with an evaluation of the impact of MCTs on human, social and economic development in rural areas of Tanzania. The full travel report from the visits is available from the author. The article starts out with a short description of the two MCTs visited, including project aims, physical lay out, services offered and users of the MCTs. In the second section the main concepts used in the article are discussed and defined. The third section elaborates on the title of the article, i.e. it discusses the question of who is the target group of the project. The fourth section takes a closer look at the 'digital divide', often mentioned in discussions on information and communication technology in Africa. The fifth section looks at provision and production of information and the conclusion summarizes the debate. While I am grateful to all the persons who spent time with me in Uganda, informing me about the projects and taking me to visit the MCTs, I alone am responsible for any mistakes in this article.

Lorenzo Komboa Ervin Arrested in Australia
Former black panther political prisoner and current civil rights activist and IWW member, Lorenzo Komboa Ervin has been arrested in Australia and may be deported any day now in an effort to censor his speaking tour. After being arrested, Lorenzo was sent to a maximum security prison in Brisbane prior to deportation. Lorenzo's arrest and physical abuse has sparked an international outcry across Australia, the U.S., Europe, South Africa, and other places around the world. Don't let the Australian government cave into demands by the racist right-wing to silence Lorenzo. Keep up the pressure! Even though Lorenzo is out of jail and has his visa back, the government has made it clear they are still going to try to deport him.
