A much improved version of this HTML document is to appear in March or April 2004.
It will be the HTML version of the Feb 28 PDF version now available just below.
Some of the following techniques are not original with me, but are ideas I have collected during my fifty years of knitting. I use them frequently and think it is convenient to have them written in one place, especially for anyone who is not used to using them.
Tubular cast-on for one-by-one ribbing or for double knitting
  • Row 1: With scrap yarn, using the simple cast-on (sometimes called backwards thumb cast-on) cast on one-half the stitches required plus 1. Row 2: With the yarn you will use for the garment, and needles 2 or 3 sizes smaller than those needed for the ribbing, *knit 1, yarn over (yo)*; repeat between *s across row, ending with knit 1. This will give you an odd number of stitches. Row 3: *Slip 1 as if to purl with yarn in front, knit 1*; repeat between *s across row, ending with a slip 1. Row 4: *Knit 1, slip 1 as if to purl with yarn in front*; repeat between *s across row, ending with a knit 1.

Watching paint dry
Watching the last of the Dubblemossa will be a lot like watching paint dry. Slow, dull and not much to see. The rest of the cap is straight stitch in white with a regularly spaced decreases through about 6 inches and then duplicate the top to finish. The cap finishes as a tube, closed at both ends.

General information: Knitting "In through the front door, Once around the back, Peek through the window, And off jumps Jack." Bring back memories? Many rhymes, and the stitching skills they taught, have been passed down through the years. You probably have a favorite of your own. Though knitting basics have remained the same, today's knitters are blessed with an abundance of beautiful yarn and fiber choices like never before. Technology allows manufacturers to produce machine-spun yarn with the natural look and feel of homespun, yet the easy-care qualities of synthetics. There are specialty and novelty yarns even yarn with a memory! You may be a beginning knitter learning the basic stitches or an intermediate knitter who has advanced to more difficult pattern stitches working from patterns and graphs. Perhaps you are an accomplished knitter who has mastered difficult procedures and are inspired by complex patterns. No matter what your skill level, the finish is the same "Knit yourself over, Invite your friend, too, Leap frog over, Lie down, Sue ...!"

http://www.wonderful-things.com/newknit.htm
INTRODUCTION TO KNITTING Knitting is the art of using yarn or thread to make fabric from interlocking loops. Its origin has been traced as far back as the fourth or fifth century B.C. to sandal socks discovered in the Middle East.
In the past, knitting has been the occupation of shepherds watching their flocks, sailors whiling away the hours of long voyages during the age of exploration, apprentices who studied it in 13th and 14th Century knitting guilds, and royal knitters in the court of England at the time of King Henry VIII. At certain times in history, only members of royalty were allowed to wear knitted items. One of the knitted garments on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London is a handsome handknitted silk shirt, which King Charles I wore on the day of his beheading.
Handknitting is a popular pastime, producing items that are functional, economical, fashionable and fun to make. In addition, knitting offers an opportunity for creative selection of color and style, and allows you to fashion garments that really fit. For all these reasons and more, we think you will enjoy learning the art of knitting.
