http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/content/cntareas/reading/li1lk68.htm
Literacy Best Practice in a Kindergarten Classroom Early childhood and primary grade teachers are called upon to help young children develop reading and writing skills. This challenging task is made even more complicated by the variety of children's literacy experiences and developmental levels. To ensure that a solid foundation is laid for literacy acquisition, classroom literacy activities must be developmentally appropriate as well as applicable to the wide range of literacy skills represented by the children in the classroom. In a typical classroom, children's literacy development may range from just recognizing the concept of a "word" to being able to read and write simple sentences. The teacher needs to meet the needs of all children in such a diverse group. To illustrate best practices in the teaching of literacy skills in kindergarten, a videotape was made of Jo Wingo's kindergarten classroom at Centralized Kindergarten North School in Indianapolis, Indiana. Two segments of the video are available for viewing. In the first segment, Jo Wingo works with her kindergarten class to determine the writing activity for the day

Writing Guidelines Why Write an Activity?
You've probably already written lots of activities that support your Houghton Mifflin Social Studies program. Wouldn't it be nice to share those great activities with other teachers around the world? We'll publish them right here in From My Class to Yours. And, of course, you'll be able to take advantage of all the activities written by other teachers, and use them in your classroom.
What to Do
  • Think about an activity that you do in your classroom to support or extend your Houghton Mifflin Social Studies program. The activity can be one that you've done many times before, or it can be a completely new one that you created especially for From My Class to Yours.
  • Include the objective of the activity. This will let other teachers know right away if this is an activity that they might be interested in using in their classrooms.
  • State what unit in Houghton Mifflin Social Studies you think your activity works best with. Doing this will allow teachers to scan the activities quickly and choose the ones that will work with the specifc unit they teaching at the time.
  • Take a look at the Grade 3 activities that have already been posted. They might give you an idea of what format to use for your activity.

    1. Cut out small objects on Ellison using fun foam - or use erasers from Oriental etc. Include a laminated strip of paper about 3 inches in width and an egg carton. Students make patterns or sort the objects.
    2. Write numbers on stickers (round price stickers for garage sales work well) and glue into the bottom of egg cartons. Place a bag with small objects with the carton. Students can read number and count that many objects into egg cups.
    3. Playdough, Mat, spinner. Write target numbers on spinner - many great spinners in most math books. Student spins a number: eg student spins 3 - student makes three balls out of the playdough and then creates a number 3 with it. You may include a large template for making the number.

Children and the Curriculum: The Kindergarten Program
    Multi-grade Classrooms
It is sometimes necessary for Kindergarten and Grade 1, Kindergarten to Grade 2 or other combinations of children to be taught by the same teacher. More time is required for preparing and organizing, but it is possible to offer an activity-centred program with suitable learning activities for all children. In a multi-grade classroom, cooperation is essential. Older children become tutors of their younger peers. This reinforces their knowledge, and skills and bolsters their self-confidence. Small, multi-aged cooperative groups, with each child having a role, are commonplace. The children soon become independent, responsible learners, thus allowing the teacher to circulate and meet with small groups and individuals. In collaboration, children can write, illustrate and read stories. They can record and graph observations, produce plays, and create poems and songs. It is often effective for teachers to introduce a concept to the entire class with a discussion that includes asking differentiated questions of the different grades. Then, following the discussion a special learning centre related to the concept and including appropriate activities for the varying grade levels could be available. Teachers have found that clearly defined rules and routines are necessary and that subject-integrated, open-ended activities work best in multi-grade situations.

Language Development Children need to have a broad array of language experiences. Oral language, vocabulary, and other language concepts are crucial foundations for success in reading. Children's language can be developed by exposing them to opportunities to discuss experiences, make predictions and discuss past events.
Each year kindergarten students begin the year with a Me unit. This child is using language to tell about his "child of the week" pictures and story. Kindergarten children use their language skills each morning during calendar activity. They name the day, the month, and the year, as well as describe the daily weather. Each weekend a child takes home Cubby Bear and dictates a story to their parents about their experiences to share with the class and place in a class book. Show and Tell is a favorite activity among the kindergarten children. There is usually a theme for the letter of the week or the unit study.

    Kindergarten PALS
(Partners Assisting Literacy Skills) What are Kindergarten PALS? In a busy classroom it is often difficult for the teacher to focus on a small group and still attend to the needs of the remainder of the class. Kindergarten PALS are volunteers who join the class for Literacy Center Time. PALS will meet with a group of 4-5 children. They may: play a literacy skill-based game
    read a story aloud
assist in the computer center with writing or skill-related software
supervise the listening center. How much time is required? Literacy Center Time is scheduled for approximately one hour. Times may vary with each day. A Kindergarten PAL will volunteer for one hour each week for the entire school year. It is expected that you will seriously commit to attending each week. Who can volunteer? Parents and grandparents are welcome to join us. Your child should understand that this commitment offers your time to all students. If he/she requires your undivided attention, or will not participate in activities outside your particular group, volunteering is not suggested. There will be many other opportunities to join our class during the year.

    http://roselane.msd38.org/html/classes/kindergarten/
Welcome to Kindergarten at Madison Rose Lane School! The Rose Lane Kindergarten program continues to grow! This year we have over 160 kindergarten students who attend our three-hour academic sections of kindergarten (four morning, four afternoon sections). Forty-four of those students also participate in a parent-paid kindergarten enrichment program we call "EDK" (Extended Day Kindergarten).
Our 'big picture' goal is to ensure that all Rose Lane Kindergartners are afforded the same level of high quality education, no matter which kindergarten section they attend. To reach that goal, our Kindergarten teachers meet several times each week to discuss and plan lessons. Each teacher then tailors our common plans to meet the needs of the learners in each section of kindergarten. You can find out more about each teacher's class by traveling further into our Kindergarten site. On a daily basis, our Kindergarten team is dedicated to meeting the physical, social, emotional, AND cognitive needs of all children! Our curriculum is aligned to meet and/or exceed Arizona standards for Kindergarten in the areas of reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. Due to half-day programming, our kindergartners do not attend music or PE classes, so we also incorporate music and movement into our instructional package!
