Readiness is a term used to describe preparation for what comes next: readiness for kindergarten involves both the child and the instructional situation. Any consideration of the preparation a child needs to be successful in kindergarten must take into account the kindergarten program and the teacher's expectations of the child.
Social and Behavioral Expectations
Kindergarten teachers expect that the children will be able to function within a cooperative learning environment in which the child works both independently and as a member of small and large groups. Children are expected to be able to attend to and finish a task, listen to a story in a group, follow two or three oral directions, take turns and share, and care for their belongings. They are also expected to follow rules, respect the property of others, and work within the time and space constraints of the school program. It is important that children learn to distinguish between work and play, knowing when and where each is appropriate within the definition of each (Bradley, 1984; LeCompte, 1980). Tips for Preparing Your Children for Kindergarten
As your child's first teacher, it is important that parents provide various experiences and opportunities to enhance their child's learning. The following suggestions will help your child get ready for kindergarten and adjust to and follow school expectations and routines.
  • Read to your child daily. Teach your child to hang up his/her coat and recognize personal belongings such as boots, gloves, and hat. Help your child learn to follow directions. Give one- and two-step directions and see that the task is completed. Encourage your child to play with other children and to share toys, take turns, and clean up after playtime. Teach your child to show respect for others by saying “please,” “thank you,” and “excuse me.” Model and reinforce appropriate behavior. Help your child learn his/her address and telephone number. Guide and monitor your child's television viewing. Listen to your child and encourage your child to talk about new experiences.

Model and encourage as much language as possible. When reading to your child, start asking comprehension questions. Ask how the characters are feeling. Talk about the sequence of the story (beginning, middle and end.) Have your child try to read to you! They can look at the pictures and make up a story. Have them look for what letters and words they recognize. This is also a good time to practice letter sounds! Sound out the words together. Read lots of poetry to your child. Go back and look for words that start and/or end with the same letter, words that rhyme, have the same endings, etc. Make trips to the library and let your child pick out books that interest them.

Pre-School Kindergarten CURRICULUM: Kindergarten
READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS
Kindergartners learn to appreciate good books, develop oral language and strengthen listening skills. They learn to read using sight words as well as decoding skills. The Kindergarten students begin a writing process through which they learn to write, review and edit their written work. Reading and writing activities incorporate all facets of education: music, drama, art, computers, science, and social studies. MATHEMATICS
Mathematics at the kindergarten level is based on the program Mathematics Their Way. Our program focuses on a hands-on approach to learning and understanding math. Students use a wide range of manipulatives to explore, sort, pattern, count, graph, match, sequence, classify, and measure. Our students develop their understanding of mathematical concepts throughout the stages of free exploration, patterning, and symbolic numeral representation. SCIENCE
The science program in kindergarten is fully integrated into our monthly and seasonal units. Students are expected and encouraged to discover, question, reflect, experiment, explore and record. Students use response journals to record ideas and discoveries on a weekly basis and are encouraged to bring in artifacts from home.

51. Instruction
In kindergarten children have opportunities for the Often the activities are studentselected and math, science, reading, spelling, writing, computer technology
http://www.uncp.edu/etc/Alison Pennington/instruction/Instruction.htm
Instruction Instruction can be defined as how the curriculum is taught. In my class I teach through means of direct and indirect instruction. I model the practices and behaviors I want. I teach directly in small groups. And, I use discussion of books and questioning techniques when introducing new information. Children are instructed as they work on hands-on activities and individually through conferencing. Kindergarten students require a great deal of guidance so a tremendous amount of modeling, practicing and discussion of classroom procedures is necessary at the beginning of the year. Learning Centers In kindergarten children have opportunities for the independent practice of new concepts through learning centers. Learning centers are activities planned by the teacher with a learning objective in mind. The children work independently or with a small group to complete the activities. Often the activities are student selected and are based on areas of curriculum including math, science, reading, spelling, writing, computer technology, dramatic play and construction. Differentiated Instruction In my class I try to provide students with their own level of instruction so they will have a high level of success, this practice is known as differentiated instruction. Differentiated instruction is important in kindergarten because some children come to school and they have never been read to or held a crayon or written on a piece of paper. Instead of aiming high and waiting to see what a student catches on to a child is instructed on an appropriate developmental level. For example, the books the children read are leveled on their instructional level. Class assignments are modified to meet independent needs even the homework each child receives is determined by what a child needs to work on. It can be used as either enrichment or remediation.

During the kindergarten year, students need to experience the enjoyment of reading while they learn the foundational strategies and skills that will enable them to read independently. Students learn these enabling skills of phonemic awareness, letter names, sound-letter correspondences, decoding skills, high frequency vocabulary, and comprehension skills as they listen and respond to a variety of texts. They enjoy listening to stories, relating characters and events to their own life experiences, dramatizing stories, and responding to stories through art and writing activities. They can extend their oral language skills when given opportunities to express themselves, and they can learn how oral language is recorded to convey experiences and ideas as they observe their experiences and ideas being written. Kindergarten students will:
  • Engage in word play.

Never Too Early to Write: Adventures in the K-1 Writing Workshop > Customer Review #1: Highly Recommended

Do children have to know how to spell and read before they are taught to write? No, contends Bea Johnson emphatically in Never Too Early to Write-a gem of a book which describes both a writing program and a way of thinking. Each chapter is chock-full of advice, tips, anecdotes, and, thoughtfully, samples of actual student work. In Chapters 1 and 2, Johnson makes the argument that kindergartners and first graders should be taught to write. To support her contention, she explains in detail the many benefits in doing so. One of the most important is that when students write, they are using letters and punctuation. Indeed, they are immersed in them. This, in turn, imbues the strange squiggles and marks with meaning. They are not so mysterious nor foreign anymore. They have a purpose. They can communicate thoughts, feelings, ideas. Other benefits include: enlarged vocabulary, enhanced phonetics and spelling, increased familiarity of sentence patterns and word discrimination, additional opportunities to think critically and creatively, and even increased self-esteem.

Play on Paper
PLAY ON PAPER is a short booklet that introduces pre-kindergarten and entering kindergarten children to a number of reading readiness concepts. The first two pages are for information about the child and for a child to draw a picture of himself or herself. The next two pages are for recording information about the child's favorite stories: title, author, and reason why the story is liked. Then the first three letters of the alphabet are introduced, both upper and lower case, with opportunities for letter matching. This is followed by a page where the child can create a picture out of letter forms. A pull-out section, inserted between the "Cc" page and the letter picture page, contains the complete alphabet, upper and lower case, in a script commonly used in prereading and initial reading materials. The next section of the booklet provides practice in rhyming and matching words by their initial sounds. Completing the booklet are pages for practicing the numbers 0-9 and for dictating phrases or sentences to the heading "What I want to Learn in School." On the last page, continuing on to the inside of the back cover is a second alphabet chart. This one, however, includes directional arrows, indicating for each letter the correct stroke order for printing. See the Play on Paper Activity Booklet You can use Read Write Now! Materials at:
