Fun activities to promote writing skills

Kindergarten to 1st grade
by Holly Hanke By the time your child begins school, her fine motor skills should be sufficiently developed so she can write recognizable letters and simple words. It's a perfect time to encourage her writing abilities. The activities below are designed to boost your child's creativity and to immerse her in the experience of translating her thoughts and feelings into words. Don't worry about spelling or handwriting; your child will learn these skills at school. Because children learn in different ways, these activities are arranged by learning style. If you're not sure what your child's learning style is, take our quiz . But any child can benefit from the suggestions in all three categories. What's below: For physical learners For visual learners For auditory learners For physical learners
Write together.
Whenever you sit down to write a letter or a shopping list, or to pay bills or fill out an order form, ask your child to join you. Give her some writing paper, a blank check or deposit slip, or an order form of her own to work on while you take care of business. She will learn that writing is an essential part of everyday life. Embellish a comic strip.

How to raise a child who loves to write

Kindergarten to 1st grade
by Holly Hanke What's below: Keep the pressure off Stock a variety of writing tools Experiment with surfaces Model good writing habits ... Play games that promote good writing Keep the pressure off
To raise a writer, give your child every opportunity to put pen to paper, chalk to sidewalk, paint to easel, and marker to poster board, but make sure it's all in fun. Your child will have plenty of time for handwriting drills and worksheets down the road. Your goal is to encourage him so he'll realize that writing is an activity with its own unique rewards. Stock a variety of writing tools
Store crayons, markers, chalk, pens, pencils, and paints in an accessible drawer or a special box that your child can decorate and put his name on. Encourage your child to use them whenever he likes. Chalking the sidewalk with the ABCs is a great sunny day activity; rainy days are perfect for painting indoors. Experiment with surfaces
For starters, white paper is a must. Big pads of newsprint are inexpensive and children love having a big surface to fill in. But don't forget about chalkboards, sidewalks, and dry erase boards. If you're concerned about the mess, set up a kid-size table outside or in a section of your kitchen or playroom where the splatter won't matter. And buy water-soluble markers and erasable pens for easy cleanup.

http://www.anoka.k12.mn.us/pekc
Peter Enich Kindergarten Center Home Wednesday, June 9th, 2004 Peter Enich Kindergarten Center Home Peter Enich Kindergarten Center opened in the fall of 1988. The school is located in the Anoka-Hennepin Learning Center/Distribution Center at 2740 Wingfield Avenue North in Anoka. The Enich Kindergarten Center serves three hundred twenty children from the areas of Anoka and Ramsey. Kindergarten is provided for students who will attend Franklin, Ramsey, or Washington Elementary for first through fifth grades. Students attend school on a full day, alternating day schedule. School hours are 9:35a.m. to 4:05p.m. Anoka-Hennepin School District has a kindergarten philosophy which guides instruction and communication with children and families.
*We believe children develop socially, emotionally, physically, and intellectually with individual patterns of growth.
*We believe children learn best when home, school, and community work as a team. The teachers at Peter Enich Kindergarten Center believe that play is an important part of children’s work. Without a balance of work and play in a school day, children often become restless. Through a play setting, children learn problem-solving skills by successfully using play equipment; they learn cooperation skills through their interaction with other children. Children engage in hands-on activities which provide observation and self-discovery learning opportunities. Each teacher strives to create an instructional program that respects and builds on student backgrounds, experiences, cultures, interests, and achievements.

    THE GINGERBREAD MAN
    The Gingerbread Man Theme
The classic story of the Gingerbread Man can serve as a child-centered theme to build a total curriculum around. Appropriate any time of the year, use these activities to teach, practice and apply concepts in language arts through reading, writing, phonics, and children's literature. This is a collection of activities shared by teachers with teachers. Some are original and many have been passed down from teacher to teacher. I thank teachers everywhere for sharing and am happy to be able to pass the ideas on to you for use in your classroom. I know these ideas will inspire additional games and activities as you use them. Many of the activities are designed in a game format, played either by partners or in small groups. Others are designed to be used in a whole class arrangement while some are for independent practice. Many of the activities are also appropriate for homework to give the students additional review of basic skills. This unit is filled with Blackline Masters to make it easy for you to use these activities tomorrow and then again and again year after year. It is recommended that you duplicate many of the games on heavy duty card stock, and laminate for repeated use. Addresses and phone numbers for additional resources pertaining to the Gingerbread Man theme and a bibliography are included.
