About Mary Scroggs Elementary School: Curriculum Overview
Social Studies Kindergarten
Kindergartners begin by studying themselves and their families, their growth and change, and their similarities and differences. As children become accustomed to the classroom and school, develop skills in working together and become more responsible as individuals, they achieve important social studies goals. Children develop and refine concepts about themselves and about the family as a basic institution in human society. They understand basic needs common to all people. They learn about children in other communities and surroundings; they identify similarities and differences among people. They realize that although people have basically the same needs, they may meet those needs in a variety of ways. Kindergartners work in centers, listen and observe the world. They use information to make decisions about their own activities and to plan projects. When children practice sharing, taking turns and working with each other in groups, they are developing skills for self-management necessary to function effectively. Finally, as children make choices and do activities such as recycling, they are practicing skills of civic participation. Children will be taught to: Exhibit traits of good citizenship
