Kindergarten Rainforest Unit There are several pages that give background information that is very useful.  The more you learn about the rainforest, the more you will want to learn and teach to your students.  The first page talks about setting up the environment. This is probably the best way to get the children excited about learning, and it really sets the mood for the whole unit.  There are 3 weeks worth of rainforest/jungle here - I think you will still have a hard time finishing it in that amount of time as well, but we’ll go for it!  In the getting started file, there is a jungle journal cover - just add enough blank paper for three weeks and each child will have a great journal to take home when they are finished.

Pre-Kindergarten Curriculum Mrs. Carrigan's Page Pre-Kindergarten Yearly Plan During this year children develop significantly in their physical, cognitive, social, and emotional areas. A wide variety of materials and activities are provided to suit the individual needs and interests of this young learner. Play is a crucial component of this year. Through play the children can express themselves both verbally and non verbally as well as their feelings. It promotes social development and helps to build social relationships among peers. Children are encouraged to become independent in their daily activities and to learn by exploring their environment. Reading and Language Arts We share picture books based on seasonal themes, for example in the winter we like to retell Jan Brett’s, The Mitten. We have fun acting it out under a white sheet. Each one of us plays the part of one of the animals who finds the mitten. Each month we are read aloud a seasonal poem and we become the illustrator of the poem. Our discussions are based upon the books that are read each day. In addition to sharing books we share show-n-tell which is weekly on one assigned day. The children have the opportunity to tell about their special possession while the others are good listeners. The class gets the chance to respond and ask questions. We also have a program called "star of the week". The star of the week gets an opportunity to bring to school a poster board that is collaged with pictures. He/She explains the poster, while others can again respond and ask questions.

Writing Guidelines Why Write an Activity?
You've probably already written lots of activities that support your Houghton Mifflin Social Studies program. Wouldn't it be nice to share those great activities with other teachers around the world? We'll publish them right here in From My Class to Yours. And, of course, you'll be able to take advantage of all the activities written by other teachers, and use them in your classroom.
What to Do
  • Think about an activity that you do in your classroom to support or extend your Houghton Mifflin Social Studies program. The activity can be one that you've done many times before, or it can be a completely new one that you created especially for From My Class to Yours.
  • Include the objective of the activity. This will let other teachers know right away if this is an activity that they might be interested in using in their classrooms.
  • State what unit in Houghton Mifflin Social Studies you think your activity works best with. Doing this will allow teachers to scan the activities quickly and choose the ones that will work with the specifc unit they teaching at the time.
  • Take a look at the Grade 3 activities that have already been posted. They might give you an idea of what format to use for your activity.

Kindergartners arrive at school and begin their day with opening. During Opening kindergarten takes lunch count, attendance, sign in, discuss the schedule for the day and do the calendar. This prepares them for the remainder of their day. Language arts begins the day. Teachers read aloud a variety of books helping kindergartners begin to read to themselves. Learning strategies include: learning to read print are left to right, correspondence top to bottom and finding the first page of print. Retelling stories from pictures, recognizing in their environment and upper/lower case letters are other things they learn. In language arts, it is important to know how to associate consonant sounds with letter symbols, write letters, verbalize ideas and listen. Kindergartners have recess, which is fifteen minutes long. Recess is a time for them to not only exercise, but to develop their motor skills. It is a time for them to work on social interaction with other children in the school. Next is oral literature and sharing. During oral literature, books are read aloud to the class. Kindergartners may silent read, or share a book with a partner. They also have book talks, which are theme books. Kindergartners read a variety of authors, and have specific author studies. They read pattern or rhyming books, which helps them with their language and reading skills.
