ALL KINDERGARTEN Introduction to History and Social Science The standards for kindergarten students include an introduction to interesting Americans in history whose lives demonstrated the virtues of patriotism, courage, and kindness. During the course of their first year in school, students should learn basic concepts related to history, patriotism, national symbols, good citizenship, geographic location, economics, and the importance of following rules and respecting the rights and property of other people. History
K.1 The student will recognize that history describes events and people of other times and places by
a) identifying examples of past events in legends, stories, and historical accounts of Pocahontas, George Washington, Betsy Ross, and Abraham Lincoln;
b) identifying the people and events honored by the holidays of Thanksgiving Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, and Independence Day (Fourth of July).
K.2 The student will describe everyday life in the present and in the past and begin to recognize that things change over time. Geography K.3 The student will describe the relative location of people, places, and things by using positional words, with emphasis on near/far, above/below, left/right, and behind/in front.

Kindergarten Social Studies Curriculum Kindergarten: Myself and Others The kindergarten social studies curriculum is designed to help children gain an increased awareness of themselves and the world around them. Two of the basic concepts of history and geography, time and space, are emphasized. The children learn to tell time, differentiate among past, present, and future, and trace the chronology of their own lives. To develop a sense of space, they practice finding locations at home and in school, describing the features of the locations, and tracing their movements between these locations. To lay a preliminary foundation for the study of government, the children discuss appropriate rules for personal conduct. As community members they participate in group activities and collective decision making. An awareness of economics is developed by studying the production and consumption of familiar goods and services. Throughout the year they practice collecting, interpreting, organizing, analyzing, and presenting information pertaining to their study of history, geography, civics, and economics. 54. Kindergarten Full-Day Implementation - Plano ISD
    FullDay kindergarten Program. Students break into multitasking activities involvingscience, social studies, and health. Computer lessons are incorporated.
    http://www.pisd.edu/kindergarten.htm
    Plano ISD began to move from a half-day kindergarten program to full-day kindergarten beginning August 2001. By August 2003, full-day kindergarten was implemented at all elementary schools. Following are answers to commonly-asked questions about this implementation. How did the district fund the full-day kindergarten implementation? The district funded the implementation of full-day kindergarten as a result of the passage of the September 23, 2000, bond election , which was overwhelmingly approved by Plano ISD voters. What was the timeline for implementing full-day kindergarten at the remaining elementary schools? The goal, which has been successfully met, was to have full-day kindergarten at all elementary campuses by August, 2003. Why did the School Board decide to implement full-day kindergarten in Plano ISD.What are the curricular advantages? In the past, kindergarten students had 68 essential elements to learn during the kindergarten year. In 1997, the state moved to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Kindergarten students now have 292 TEKS to learn during the kindergarten year. The kindergarten TEKS focus on academic content of what five-year-olds are expected to know and be able to do and apply to both full- and half-day programs. With the increased expectations for students and with close to 90% of all public school kindergarten students in Texas attending a full-day program, the Board of Trustees decided to implement full-day kindergarten in Plano ISD.
