  • Children can be led to observe changes in their immediate environments, such as changes in the room, on the playground, or in the school building.
  • Encourage children to create structures with blocks that represent what they know of their community and neighborhood. They might construct a fire station, gas station, harbor, airport, etc.
  • Children can work together to move toys or materials that need to be moved or to clean up the materials and play area.
  • Teachers can keep a large scrapbook with records of important events in the children's experiences. Reviewing it with the children will teach them that we can keep records of events and that these records help us to recall the events accurately

Kindergarten Transportation Unit To start:  Have lots of pictures of transportation around the room. I think Mrs. Duwe is supposed to pull books for us and put them on a cart so we can share easily.  I have quite a few transportation books if you need one. Here are some extra activities to plug in wherever you can: Journals:  "I like to ride" page - it could be the cover for a transportation  journal or done separately. They can draw their favorite type of transportation to travel in and write the word or dictate to you. Teach each child to write simple sentences with the easier transportation words (i.e. car, bus, van)

Context:
Students at this age begin to practise basic gathering, sharing and interpreting of information . They also practise responsible citizenship by co-operatively addressing problems relevant to them.
Activities:
Collect or draw a picture of one need and one want . Provide pictures with people interacting and ask the children to talk about what the pictures mean to them. Talk about problem situations that occur in daily life and encourage the student to identify different ways to solve the problem.
Society and Culture
Context:
Through experiential activities and discussion, students identify their own wants and needs and begin to understand the difference between the two. They extend this to gain an understanding of their place in the family and the community recognizing the range of family structures and caregivers.
Activities:
Collect items from around the home that represent a personal grab bag of needs and wants. Group such items on a chart under the headings: Safety, Health and Happiness. Provide magazines, catalogues, and other picture resources. Ask students to find pictures of needs and wants. Have the children cut and paste the pictures using the following sentence starters:

Nature of the Work
Working Conditions ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed.
  • Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions.
  • Excellent job opportunities are expected as a large number of teachers retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; opportunities will vary somewhat by geographic area and subject taught.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and “hands-on” approaches to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. They utilize “props” or “manipulatives” to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or of addition and subtraction by playing board games. As the children get older, the teachers use more sophisticated materials, such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers. To encourage collaboration in solving problems, students are increasingly working in groups to discuss and solve problems together. Preparing students for the future workforce is the major stimulus generating the changes in education. To be prepared, students must be able to interact with others, adapt to new technology, and think through problems logically. Teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop these skills.
