    OVERVIEW
The "Seeds and Weeds" unit provides students an opportunity to examine and compare many different types of seeds. They look for seeds in their environment and they learn about the various ways seeds travel and plant themselves. Students grow their own seeds and observe the changes that take place during the germination and growing process. Finally, they observe the changes that take place when certain seeds are cooked, for example, popping corn and cooking beans for chili.
    SFUSD SCIENCE CONTENT STANDARDS
Using the materials in the "Seeds and Weeds" unit the following standards can be addressed: PROPERTIES OF MATTER CONTENT STANDARD 6: Students understand that matter can be described by its attributes. THE CELL CONTENT STANDARD 10: Students understand that living things are made of smaller structures. These smaller structures allow for living things to be adaptable, diverse, interdependent and undergo change over time. STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION CONTENT STANDARD 11: Students understand that living things have features that enable them to survive. Living things have similar characteristics yet are diverse in the way in which they adapt to their habitat

    74. At-home Science Activities For Children And Families
of recommended science learning goals for children in kindergarten through 12 th childrenhas links to, and summaries about, a multitude of science activities.
    http://www.tryscience.org/parents/se_1.html
Science is all around you. Your backyard, your kitchen, and other areas around your home provide natural "laboratories" for children. Children are curious; exploring with science can be lots of fun while also teaching them a great deal about themselves and their world. As your family gets involved with science at home, keep two important issues in mind: education and safety. While science projects can be fun, they should be based on solid educational standards that provide them with knowledge and skills that are age-appropriate and, wherever possible, related to their school science curriculum. At-home activities should be designed by professionals with the child's safety and success in mind. Remember: even the simplest activities with the most basic of materials can be harmful or dangerous, so parental supervision and guidance is critical at all times. Interested in more? by Alison Rooney For the third time, the RBS Maryland State Team partnered with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) to sponsor the Maryland Model for School Readiness (MMSR) Summer 2003 Science Institute for Kindergarten Teachers. MSDE established MMSR in 1997 to support teachers with intensive professional development in the areas of assessment and instructional techniques, so that their students are best prepared to benefit from learning experiences once they enter first grade. Held July 10 and 11 at the Meeting House in Columbia, MD, this science institute brought together 32 kindergarten and pre-K teachers who had already completed at least one year of training in MMSR. These included all of the kindergarten and pre-K teachers from four local school systems.

    • Use shoe boxes stored along a bench to store student's papers. Velcro a laminated name tag on each box for each child. Here they can store all of their possessions. They can also take their name off to use to practice writing their names!

    • Student Assistance: When you need a new bulletin board put up, some playground equipment put together, or a new shelving unit built, check with your local high school. Shop teachers are often looking for class projects that are a little more meaningful than making another birdhouse or whatnot shelf. Just ask!
    • Birthday Box: Create a reusable, decorated birthday box for children's birthdays. Inside place several treats, such as candy, pencils, stickers, and a birthday sticker. Leave the box on the child's desk so he will be surprised on the morning. Celebrate summer birthdays during the last month of school.
