Virginia Standards of Learning
Science: Kindergarten
The kindergarten standards stress the use of basic science skills to explore common materials, objects, and living things. Emphasis is placed on using the senses to gather information. Students are expected to develop skills in posing simple questions, measuring, sorting, classifying, and communicating information about the natural world. The science skills are an important focus as students learn about life processes and properties of familiar materials such as magnets and water. Through phenomena including shadows, patterns of weather, and plant growth, students are introduced to the concept of change. The significance of natural resources and conservation is introduced in the kindergarten standards.

Required Areas of Study
Science
The aim of the Kindergarten to Grade 12 Science Curricula is to develop students who are scientifically literate. For Saskatchewan students, scientific literacy has been defined by a series of factors or descriptors. These factors outline what should be emphasized during science teaching. It is not necessary to design a science centre in the Kindergarten classroom. The factors of scientific literacy can be developed through materials and activities at the block building centre, sand and water centre, imaginative play centre, exploration centre, quiet-time relaxation centre, cooking centre, woodworking centre, or through other centres, experiences or projects. Centres, activities or projects devoted to science are not a critical component of a Kindergarten classroom. The learning that students acquire through various concrete experiences are what is important. The guidelines that outline an appropriate Kindergarten curriculum also apply to an appropriate science curriculum. The foundation for acquiring an understanding of science concepts is established through hands-on, experiential play with concrete materials. Children will gain a basis for constructing an understanding of their surroundings through discussion of their observations and reflection upon the meanings of their experiences. Such an understanding is the essence of science, and the ability to see how science is intertwined in all aspects of life is the basis of scientific literacy. Teachers can support science activities in the classroom by asking `why', `what', and `how' questions such as:

Kindergarten Science TOPICS: Course Description Text Testing F.O.S.S. is the F ull O ption S cience S ystem The Full Option Science System springs from a philosophy of learning at the Lawrence Hall of Science that has guided the development of successful active-learning science curricula for more than 25 years. The FOSS developers are dedicated to the proposition that elementary students learn science best by doing science. Teachers and students do science together when they open the FOSS kits, engaging in enduring experiences that lead to deeper understanding of the natural world. Science is an active enterprise, made active by our human capacity to think. Scientific knowledge advances when scientists observe objects and events, think about how they relate to what is known, test their ideas in logical ways, and generate explanations that integrate the new information into the established order.

Nature of the Work
Working Conditions ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed.
  • Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions.
  • Excellent job opportunities are expected as a large number of teachers retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; opportunities will vary somewhat by geographic area and subject taught.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and “hands-on” approaches to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. They utilize “props” or “manipulatives” to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or of addition and subtraction by playing board games. As the children get older, the teachers use more sophisticated materials, such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers. To encourage collaboration in solving problems, students are increasingly working in groups to discuss and solve problems together. Preparing students for the future workforce is the major stimulus generating the changes in education. To be prepared, students must be able to interact with others, adapt to new technology, and think through problems logically. Teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop these skills.

Below is a brief view of our kindergarten science curriculum, along with some great links for you and your child to explore! Living and Non-living
Students observe the characteristics of living and non-living things, explore behaviors, and find out what types of environments help living and non-living materials and organisms form or grow. Our budding scientists learn that scientists everywhere study a variety of different substances and categorize alive and innate forms into these classifications. Five Senses
Students explore the connections between smell and taste, sight and hearing, and touch. Our young scientists explore vision and hearing receptors and examine how we perceive sights and vibrations. And, they discover that these are the very tools scientists use to gather information. Traveling Zoo
Our kindergarten scientists participate in a yearlong study of the numerous creatures that inhabit our Earth. Students quickly discover that all organisms have basic needs such as air, water, and food, and that animals can only survive in environments in which their needs can be met. They understand that our world has many different environments and these support the life of different animals. These allow animals to have life cycles that include being born and developing into adults. Our young scientists create habitats, build models, and act out life cycles as they identify and study the unique features of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, and insects.

59. Colorado Academy Kindergarten Science
kindergarten science is an exploration of handson science activities that linknature and science investigation topics in a lab or classroom setting.
http://www.coloacad.org/acadwbpgs/LSScienceWeb/Kindergarten.htm
KINDERGARTEN SCIENCE Kindergarten science is an exploration of hands-on science activities that link nature and science investigation topics in a lab or classroom setting. Kindergartners admire the "rookery" they created while studying penguin life in science. MONTHLY SCIENCE LABS Lower School Science In addition to the science curriculum that is taught in the lower school, a separate lab program has been developed. Students in the kindergarten through the fifth grade attend these monthly labs, which are taught by a lower school science teacher. Lessons actively involve the children and are inquiry based by design. Depending on the age of the students, topics change every month or a theme is continued throughout the year. The students attend the labs at Woody's Pond or at the lower school science classroom. Kindergarten Science The underlying components of the Kindergarten science curriculum are the concepts of curiosity and questioning. The Kindergarten has composed themes of study that allow students to explore their natural curiosity. Throughout each theme, students are engaged by sharing their existing knowledge of the specific subject area or by observing an interesting or exciting component of the topic. Next, students gain experience and knowledge through instructional and hands-on exploration. They then demonstrate or explain an understanding of the subject covered through a variety of methods and techniques. Children are given opportunities to carry this knowledge over into new experiences and elaborate upon principles learned. Finally, lessons are organized in a way that allow students to evaluate what they know and how they can use skills they have acquired.
