Kindergarten Science
Kindergarten Curiosity: Can This Be Science? By Carol Vaage For Science Council Conference, October 17, 1997 Use children's natural curiosity and interests to create a metamorphosis in your classroom. A metamorphosis refers to real changes: eggs hatching, seeds sprouting, a classroom pet dying. Real experiences, exploration and learning changing the child - that's the metamorphosis we, as teachers, are searching for. Each year, we get a new group of children with a wide range of interests and development. One year, you may get a group that is inventive and construction oriented. Another year, you may have a group of naturalists, or environmentalists, or geologists, or paleontologists, botanists, marine biologists, meteorologists, and so on. But the children don't come into your class neatly identified for you. The best part of the job is introducing topics until the momentum is sparked. Imagination soars, ideas fly, projects develop, and activity is sustained.

We've developed a watershed treasure map using mounted floodplain maps
as puzzle pieces which help students to read maps, orient to where they
are and provide an introduction to watershed awareness. It's likely too
advanced for kindergarten, but explaining the basics of the hydrologic
cycle (the great round river) and the fact that the human body is mostly
water can be done at that age; that's when I learned about it, and I've
been amazed by it ever since.
All the best,

Kindergarten Curriculum Ms. Terry's Page Mrs. Hoyt's Page The Kindergarten curriculum provides experiences that meet children's needs and stimulates learning in all developmental areasphysical, social, emotional and intellectual. Different levels of ability, development and learning styles are expected, accepted, and used to design appropriate activities which develop children's self-esteem and positive feelings toward learning. Our Kindergartners enjoy an "extended day" program. All children attend school every morning from 8:15-1200. The classes are divided in half and each group stays two afternoons a week. This provides for small group instruction in the afternoons. We have seen significant growth and learning taking place as a result of the reduced class size. Reading and Language Arts The reading and language arts curriculum is the core of the Kindergarten Program. We spend a great deal of our time and energy involved in reading books, writing, speaking, acting out stories, drawing and dictating. We teach letters and letter sounds by concentrating on one letter a week. This provides the children with a variety of experiences from which to learn letter sounds. The children are encouraged from the beginning of the year to share and enjoy books. Literature extension activities such as rewriting books, art projects, and cooking are some of the ways children learn to appreciate good books. We enjoy daily quiet reading time and meet once a week with our second grade "Reading Buddies".
