Cons intense graphics cause computer freezes Full Review I have long been a fan of educational software for children, and the JumpStart family of products produced by The Knowledge and Adventure Company is at the top of my list. Over the years my 9 and 11 year old sons have enjoyed the JumpStart 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade titles and the beneficial results have been seen on their report cards time after time. When it became apparent that my 4 year old daughter was ready for her turn on the computer, I chose Jumpstart Kindergarten as her first software application. She was fairly proficient in using a mouse from time spent playing Mario Paint on our Super Nintendo and she had a good working knowledge of colors, letters, shapes, and numbers. Although Knowledge and Adventure offers two other pre-school titles in her age range, I felt that the Kindergarten program for ages 4-6 was most suited for her level of development at this time with the added benefit of challenging her through her first year of school. Here is an overview and some specifics:

The Building Blocks™ framework is the nationally acclaimed balanced literacy approach created in Elaine Williams' very own classroom. Its goal is to help you create a developmentally appropriate learning environment for all your kindergartners-one that meets them where they are in their literacy development. Elaine will introduce what the Building Blocks™ framework is (and what it isn't) and give you an overview of what this remarkable instructional approach can do for your students. She'll also show you where to begin on the first day of school and beyond. What are the "blocks" of Building Blocks™?
The Building Blocks™ framework is composed of six understandings . These six "blocks" are not separate structured blocks, but instead instructional goals that are interwoven throughout your day through a variety of exercises. The understandings are: 1. Desire to Learn to Read and Write Language Concepts Print Concepts Phonemic Awareness Interesting Words , and 6.

Using Research and Reason in Education

Paula J. Stanovich and Keith E. Stanovich
Teachers believe in the power of information, but the rush of school life makes it difficult to stay current with the research on effective instruction. This brief paper will help teachers become discerning consumers of educational programs and materials. It provides guidance on how to recognize scientifically based instructional strategies, and how to use the concepts of research in the classroom. Proven Ideas for Parents from ResearchKindergarten through Grade Three
The road to becoming a reader begins the day a child is born and continues through the end of third grade. At that point, a child must read with ease and understanding to take advantage of the learning opportunities in fourth grade and beyond. This booklet offers advice for parents of children from grades K-3 on how to support reading development at home, and how to recognize effective instruction in their children's classrooms. School Day Highlights
B.F. Day has a long and proud history of educating children in Seattle. We are the oldest, continually operating school in the city. Our building is a designated historic landmark having undergone state-of-the-art renovation in 1991. B.F. Day has an outstanding record of parent and community participation in school governance and support. Our school was one of the first Seattle elementary schools to institute a Site Council with staff, parent and community participation. We have an active Parent Teacher Student Association ( PTSA ), which supports the many special programs offered to our students. A Parent Volunteer Coordinator helps place parent and community volunteers in classrooms, the library and tutoring programs. In 1996, B.F. Day instituted a Parent/Teacher/Student contract signed by all teachers and families attending the school. Parents make a commitment to volunteer a minimum of 15 hours per family to support the school. Eighty percent of all B.F. Day families currently fulfill this commitment. B.F. Day has a long-term relationship with the Fremont Arts Council, which provides volunteer involvement for school art, projects. The Fremont Chamber of Commerce partners with the school for annual fundraising activities. Our neighbors, Adobe Systems and Getty Images, provides technology and resources to the school.

Getting Ready
A parents role Reading is fun and exciting. It opens the door to your child’s imagination and creates memories you share with your child. It is important to remember that there is no perfect way to instantly make your child a reader. Every child is different and will learn at their pace, just as they learned to crawl, walk and talk at their own pace. There are, however a lot of things you can do to help your beginning reader. Start by setting aside a special time to read and discuss books. Find a quiet, cozy place to read. Have your child color and decorate a shoe box to store books published by your child as well as booklets they will be bringing home from school. Most importantly read, read, read some more to your child. top
Most Asked Questions
What books should I choose? When your child is ready to begin reading look for books that: Have large print and big spaces between words Have pictures that support the text Have repeated phrases of text Have words that your child already knows Are interesting to your child top Is it okay that my child seems to be memorizing the books?
