43. Kindergarten Full-Day Implementation - Plano ISD
FullDay kindergarten Program. This large group time includes the following routine activities Model/Shared Writing and reading Writing the morning message
http://www.pisd.edu/kindergarten.htm
Plano ISD began to move from a half-day kindergarten program to full-day kindergarten beginning August 2001. By August 2003, full-day kindergarten was implemented at all elementary schools. Following are answers to commonly-asked questions about this implementation. How did the district fund the full-day kindergarten implementation? The district funded the implementation of full-day kindergarten as a result of the passage of the September 23, 2000, bond election , which was overwhelmingly approved by Plano ISD voters. What was the timeline for implementing full-day kindergarten at the remaining elementary schools? The goal, which has been successfully met, was to have full-day kindergarten at all elementary campuses by August, 2003. Why did the School Board decide to implement full-day kindergarten in Plano ISD.What are the curricular advantages? In the past, kindergarten students had 68 essential elements to learn during the kindergarten year. In 1997, the state moved to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Kindergarten students now have 292 TEKS to learn during the kindergarten year. The kindergarten TEKS focus on academic content of what five-year-olds are expected to know and be able to do and apply to both full- and half-day programs. With the increased expectations for students and with close to 90% of all public school kindergarten students in Texas attending a full-day program, the Board of Trustees decided to implement full-day kindergarten in Plano ISD.

It is important to note: Building Blocks is not Four Blocks! Cheryl Sigmon describes and contrasts the two in Ariticle #16 on Teachers.Net The overall goal of Building Blocks is to provide a developmentally appropriate kindergarten classroom which accepts all children where they are and takes them forward on their literacy journey. The six Building Blocks are not separate structured blocks, but are goals which are integrated throughout the instructional day of a Kindergarten classroom through a variety of activities. The activities and concepts behind Building Blocks is currently best describe in "Month-By-Month Reading and Writing for Kindergarten" by Dottie Hall and Pat Cunningham. The Six Building Blocks are:

Wolftrap Elementary School Mrs. Bowers Mrs. Morris Overview:
  • Welcome to kindergarten. Kindergarten students at Wolftrap Elementary are involved in daily learning experiences with language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, and music and movement. Through all of our activities, kindergartners are encouraged to develop good feelings about themselves and school and to embark on new experiences. Kindergarten provides a stimulating educational environment where children can increase their self-identity, self-fulfillment, and gain from the social and educational introduction to the classroom.
    Curriculum:
Kindergartners spend a significant part of their day in learning centers. During t his time, they have the opportunity to work independently, with classmates, w ith an aide or parent volunteer, or with the teacher, as they develop skills or concepts in the areas such as problem solving, computation, writing, reading, science, technology, critical thinking, and social studies. Kindergartners are involved in activities such as the listening station, blocks, playdough, math and color games, alphabet and phonic, phonemic awareness, dramatic play, story retelling, sand and water play and puppets which are used in combination to meet our standards of learning objectives.
    Language Arts:
Children are inspired to read and write by hearing stories read aloud; participating in shared writing and reading activities; from seeing others read and write; from having opportunities to read and write themselves.

Engaging for the child. Early math, shapes, sound matching, simple reading and other language activities of different types, styles, and complexities. Tasks get progressively harder toward the new school year. A good general purpose review and prep to keep skills fresh and build a few new ones before schools starts in August. Pretty well-illustrated. Encourages independent reading (though what kids at this age can read is still fairly limited)and offers a suggested reading list. In choosing books for independant reading the key is for the child to enjoy reading challenging materialslet your child choose what interests them as much as possible.

Summer Bridge Activities: Preschool to Kindergarten > Customer Review #1: Good activity book for summer.

This book is a nice introduction to kindergarden work. Id particularly recommend it for kids who already like doing "worksheet" type activities. My sons older brother has started the 45h-5th bridge activity book, so both signed the contracts in the beginning-if they complete 20 days they get a trip to the toy store, and both work on their books at the same time. This is no substitute for interactive learning, or playing, or reading to them, but keeps skills from getting rusty, and in the case of my pre-kindergardener gets him thinking about the sorts of things hell be doing next year.

How often does your child see you reading a newspaper, a book, or a magazine? By reading at home, you are
showing your child that reading is an important and enjoyable experience. Another enjoyable experience is reading
to your child. This can be a valuable part of your daily routine. The more you read to your child, the more they
will develop a desire to read. When you read to your child, the child is learning much more than just what happens in the story. As children hold
and handle books, they learn how to turn the pages, where the story begins and ends, and how a story is told. As children become interested in books, they become curious about the words and pictures in the books. This is a first step in their becoming readers. Children who have a favorite book often ask for re-readings of that book. Re-readings help them become familiar with words and their meaning - an important step in learning to read. Children love guessing what will happen next in a story or what will appear next in the pictures.

    60. Guided Reading In Kindergarten
In order to teach the state mandated objectives while providing developmentally appropriate activities, I developed this approach to reading in kindergarten.

    Guided Reading in Kindergarten
    INTRODUCTION

My, how the kindergarten curriculum has changed in my years of teaching. I firmly believe in providing my students with a developmentally appropriate curriculum. However, in the past few years the kindergarten curriculum has accelerated tremendously. Kindergarten children are expected to go to first grade with beginning reading skills. In order to teach the state mandated objectives while providing developmentally appropriate activities, I developed this approach to reading in kindergarten. First of Year Approach After the initial assessment of each child in my class, I group them according to their academic and developmental level. This enables me to work with children that need help learning their letters, beginning sounds, etc. while introducing emergent reading text to children who are ready to begin reading in small group situations. I use the Building Blocks philosophy in whole group instruction which introduces objectives in a multilevel format. To read more about the Four Blocks/Building Blocks approach to reading visit Patricia Cunningham's web site.
Students in my classroom are placed in five groups. They rotate through five literacy based centers each week, included Guided Reading. I see at least three groups everyday. I call groups from other centers as I finish each group. Each group is assigned a color. (I choose activities for each group based on their academic level. However, this discussion is based on the groups ready for guided reading).
