Fun activities for beginning readers

Kindergarten to 1st grade
by Maile Carpenter The secret to helping your child learn to read is showing him that reading can provide endless hours of fun. Here are some great activity ideas for your beginning reader. Because children learn in different ways, we've arranged these activities by learning style. If you're not sure what your child's learning style is, take our quiz. Click here for the preschool to kindergarten quiz or here for the 1st to 3rd grade quiz. But any child can benefit from the suggestions in all three categories. What's below: For physical learners For auditory learners For visual learners For physical learners
Get a library card in your child's name
Go the library together and visit the checkout counter to apply for a library card. If he knows how to spell his own name, ask him to tell you while you write it down on the application. When you get the card, make a copy of it and laminate it so your child has a card of his own to carry around; if your library system uses plastic cards with bar codes, get your child his own card as they are easily replaced. Play dress-up and act out a book Dressing up like the characters in your child's favorite book can really bring reading to life. You can invite some of your child's friends over and make it a playdate.

by Holly Hanke Here are 12 fun ways to introduce your child to the world of math. Because children learn in different ways, they are arranged by learning style. If you're not sure what your child's learning style is, take our quiz What's below: For the visual learner For the physical learner For the auditory learner For the visual learner
Go on a number safari.
When you're driving around town, have your child look for numbers in street and store signs, and license plates. Call out the numbers as you find them. Being able to recognize numbers up to 20 is an important skill at this age. Connect the dots. Make a phone call. Write the phone number of a friend or relative down on a piece of paper. Have your child dial the number to give her practice reading numbers left to right. Estimate the weight of a household object. Ask your child to guess the weight of the family cat, a dictionary, a glass of water. Then show her how to use a scale to find out the real weight. Have her estimate her own weight, and that of other family members. While her guesses may be way off, you're introducing her to the concepts of weight and estimating. Play pattern games.

Personalized books help make reading fun!
Raising a Reader Reading begins at home. As a parent you are the first and most important link on the road to reading. Enjoy stories with your child from a very early age. Even newborns can sense your enthusiasm when you read to them. Try to set aside a special time each and every day that you and your child can enjoy a number of books together without interruption. Your child will signal you when he or she begins to tire of this activity. Let this be your clue that story time has ended. It is probably best to let your child dictate the length of time spent reading and you will find that as the activity becomes standard, your child will sit and listen for longer periods of time. Be sure and engage your child in conversations, for communicating orally is a prerequisite to understanding the written word. Encourage and ask questions like "Why?", "What would you have done?" or "Who was your favorite character?" from a book or television show. Your child will have a lot of fun choosing books from the library or bookstore and will enjoy even the simplest of tales. Once your child begins to read independently, take turns reading to each other. This is also a great time to begin to read longer stories, perhaps a chapter or two a day. There are plenty of books out there that will keep them on the edge of their seats until the next reading session.

Language Development Children need to have a broad array of language experiences. Oral language, vocabulary, and other language concepts are crucial foundations for success in reading. Children's language can be developed by exposing them to opportunities to discuss experiences, make predictions and discuss past events.
Each year kindergarten students begin the year with a Me unit. This child is using language to tell about his "child of the week" pictures and story. Kindergarten children use their language skills each morning during calendar activity. They name the day, the month, and the year, as well as describe the daily weather. Each weekend a child takes home Cubby Bear and dictates a story to their parents about their experiences to share with the class and place in a class book. Show and Tell is a favorite activity among the kindergarten children. There is usually a theme for the letter of the week or the unit study.

    THE GINGERBREAD MAN
    The Gingerbread Man Theme
The classic story of the Gingerbread Man can serve as a child-centered theme to build a total curriculum around. Appropriate any time of the year, use these activities to teach, practice and apply concepts in language arts through reading, writing, phonics, and children's literature. This is a collection of activities shared by teachers with teachers. Some are original and many have been passed down from teacher to teacher. I thank teachers everywhere for sharing and am happy to be able to pass the ideas on to you for use in your classroom. I know these ideas will inspire additional games and activities as you use them. Many of the activities are designed in a game format, played either by partners or in small groups. Others are designed to be used in a whole class arrangement while some are for independent practice. Many of the activities are also appropriate for homework to give the students additional review of basic skills. This unit is filled with Blackline Masters to make it easy for you to use these activities tomorrow and then again and again year after year. It is recommended that you duplicate many of the games on heavy duty card stock, and laminate for repeated use. Addresses and phone numbers for additional resources pertaining to the Gingerbread Man theme and a bibliography are included.

Finding the treasure is simple the user must earn stars by successfully completing reading activities. Once five stars have been collected, the race for treasure is on. To complete the hunt, kids navigate a simple maze, aided by underwater buddies. In addition to the five reading activities, a treasure room is set up for each registered user. This room not only stores accumulated treasure, it also includes word flash cards, a kid-friendly word processor, B-mail which receives lighthearted messages from Blaster friends, stories that can be read aloud and printed, and a personalized star chart, mapping the user’s progress in the program. Educational Value Reading Blaster for Kindergarten includes five different learning activities with five distinct ability levels. Changing levels greatly influences the material covered in the activities, so that it looks like a new game each time the child moves up a level. For example, the ‘Clamshell Scramble’ asks kids to correctly order scrambled puzzle elements. At the simplest level this means putting the letters in the right order to spell a given word, while at Level 5, kids are asked to sequence words to complete sentences.

Perhaps a cast of furry friends, all winsome, witty, and wonderfully loveable and all not only present, but at their best in this two disk set. In Disk 1, "Elmo’s Get Set to Read," the user chooses from among six books, each featuring a different ready-to-read activity. In addition to Elmo, the program’s cheerleader and guide, other familiar Muppet characters make the books sparkle with clever charm. Activities include linking puzzle pieces to create words, beatnik-like rhyming sessions, matching words to corresponding letter sounds, and cooking up words with ‘Chef Cookie’. Three levels of diffiuclty adjust automatically to continually challenge the blossoming reader. The second disk contains the interactive story "Elmo Through the Looking-Glass." In this parody of the classic Lewis Carroll tale, the user joins Elmo as he travels through a strange land searching for the little red monster he encounters in his bedroom mirror. In addition to read-a-long text, the story’s pages include delightful clickables as well as many simple learning adventures.
