TRENDS IN SUMMER CAMP
FACT: There are almost 10,000 children's summer camps in the United States (many of which are close to 100 years old). Over six million children attend these camps each summer. TRENDS: DID YOU KNOW? Filling the Gap: In the past children attended camp through age 15. With their college years not beginning until age 17 or 18, parents were left with a 2 - 4 year gap. Where there is demand a supply soon follows. Travel programs (both domestic and overseas), academic enrichment, community service, wilderness adventure, and exotic Caribbean programs are some of the more popular and exciting opportunities for todays senior campers. These specialized programs often accommodate children through ages 17 and 18. INTRODUCTION TO
NATIONAL CAMP ASSOCIATION
SUMMER CAMP: A child's Shangra La. A place to learn, grow, make friends, and have fun. Simply put - the experience of a lifetime for a child! NATIONAL CAMP ASSOCIATION: Offers a public guidance and referral service which recommends the finest summer camps throughout the country and abroad. An organization dedicated to helping parents find the right camp for their children. Over the years, the camp industry has grown to new heights. Children from all over the world spend their summers in the United States, Canada and abroad. The number of camps to choose from can be overwhelming to a parent. They look for help. The dual-career household, the modern family, can no longer provide the care and recreational needs of their children to fill the long, hot days of summer after the last 3 o'clock bell has rung in June. They seek a viable alternative - summer camp. National Camp Association offers information on virtually every imaginable type of overnight summer program. From athletic to artistic, academic to recreational, learning disabled to weight reduction, we recommend camps for every child. Teen tours and overseas programs are available as well. All National Camp Association camps are accredited programs that have met strict standards including health, safety, quality programming, and have been evaluated by a National Camp Association advisor.

This page contains suggestions for rewards for children of various age groups. These rewards can be provided as positive reinforcement for behavior modification programs. Rewards that are selected by the child usually are the most powerful. Also, a variety of reward possibilities helps to keep a child motivated over a long period of time. Rewards can be privileges, things or activities with parents. They are never a substitute for words of praise and encouragement. Rewards are most meaningful when given along with positive words and touch from parents. Check out the suggestions for your child:

Even kids get depressed
June 7, 1999 Web posted at: 8:58 AM EDT (1258 GMT) In this story: How prevalent is childhood depression? What should parents look for? How serious is it? What about treatment? ... RELATEDS By Pat Carolan (WebMD) Depression is a psychiatric disorder characterized by a profound and long-lasting sadness or despair. It affects approximately 18 million people in the United States every year and not all of them are old enough to vote. "First-graders can and do get depressed," says Dr. James C. MacIntyre, associate professor of psychiatry at Albany Medical College in New York. "It's not a common thing, but kids in the early grades experience significant depression." And on even rarer occasions, preschoolers show signs of depression. A child who stops playing with friends, frequently complains of stomachaches or headaches or is considered a "troublemaker" may actually be depressed.

Please pardon our dust! We're improving the presentation of the "Gutter Tribe" images and fixing a few broken links. Hang in there...
Introduction
Photojournalist Jana Birchum spent 6 weeks in January and February, 1995, chronicling the lives of young homeless living on the streets of Austin, Texas. Her dramatic photographs were first presented in the March 24, 1995 edition of The Austin Chronicle . We're proud to present an expanded collection of these images to the World Wide Web community. We encourage you to read Jana Birchum's introduction to this exhibit There are two distinct galleries here. Each presents a different selection of photographs, and allows you to navigate through the images in different ways. You're welcome to try them each and send us your comments

  • 1-bit (black and white) interactive gallery An interactive exhibit in which different juxtapositions are at your control. Because of the small image sizes, this is also optimized for those with slow Internet connections, e.g. over a modem.
  • 8-bit (grayscale) overview gallery A top-level overview of many of Jana Birchum's "Gutter Tribe" photographs, many never published before. These are large images, and are best for those with fast Internet connections, e.g. over an Ethernet network.
